I've read light novels, and I've read "real" Japanese literature, and I've read manga and watched anime.
I've also played his games.
He's not that bad. Some of them aren't that good.
I think his principal talent is as a screen writer, and at that, when he's engaged in affectionate parody of spy and action movies. If he'd never made it big he'd just be writing/making weird little games himself or with a small team like a lot of these guys do.
The style is not for everyone. Honestly it's kind of eccentric and an acquired taste. It does not necessarily involve "good" character writing or dialogue. (Although I think he has punchy examples of both. Just not you know, stuff for the ages. Not as high literature. But by god, fun and memorable.)
>He's not that bad
/tv/ here. his writing is a fuckin joke. his whole plot is a twist. and he covers his unlimited plot holes with more twists. his "movies" you cant even follow them unless you played all his previous shit. i cringed so hard in mgs2 that i fractured my skull. i think in his latest game some of his big movie friends (Toro) opened his eyes about what a complete fool he was makin of himself. having said that gameplay in mgs1/2/3 remains unbeaten
I can't find the whole thing, but he literally predicted the future of internet communities.
The gameplay in MGS is and was nothing particularly special, just action-stealth.
>his "movies" you cant even follow them unless you played all his previous shit
If you're from /tv/ you should know that's usually how sequels work, or maybe not just current television is pop fiction designed for imbeciles who can't follow a story thread for more than seven minutes, god forbid more than one plot point is happening at similar times.
As someone who studies literature at the graduate level academically, it always surprises me when people who dislike Urobuchi start criticizing his writing. The fact of the matter is that, from a technical point of view, he is a very skilled writer. It's rare in anime that someone is so good at both writing compelling plots and making believable, interesting characters. All of Urobuchi's stories have both of these, as well as extremely well-written, interesting dialogue.
There are parts of Fate/Zero that actually remind me of Shakespeare. Of course I don't mean this in a qualitative way, but just in a structural sense of the way that he creates characters and writes them.
The only really shitty thing about Urobuchi is that he's very lazy. He needs to stop letting other people finish the stories that he starts. Aldnoah.Zero and Psycho-pass, arguably even Madoka Magica, are all incomplete and he's putting his faith in people who lack his sophistication and skill to realize the rest of his original vision.
Aside from this though, considering writing quality is typically the worst thing about anime, it's surprising that /a/ is so eager to denounce the few examples of competent writers that there are. Urobuchi, Kawahara and Okada are good examples of writers that are frequently slandered on /a/ by people who are trying to seem smart by having hard, contrary opinions, but who just end up sounding like idiots, at least to me, and I'm sure to anyone else who actually knows a thing or two about "good writing."
>A drama or literary work in which the main character is brought to ruin or suffers extreme sorrow, especially as a consequence of a tragic flaw, moral weakness, or inability to cope with unfavorable circumstances.
>trying to seem smart by having hard, contrary opinions
Literally 4chan. Don't let it get to you. Though you probably typed up that wall more for your sake than the boards. And that's ok.
>There are parts of Fate/Zero that actually remind me of Shakespeare. Of course I don't mean this in a qualitative way, but just in a structural sense of the way that he creates characters and writes them.
Is this pasta supposed to be tasty?
it can't work out, if it was pre-digital era of anime someone like Kojima could come in and make something great even without any background in animation, the way things are now though he'd be hard pressed to make anything that isn't just shoveled out garbage, cgi shit just like is lauded knight of sidonia anime
Kojima... you absolute idiot... JUST GO BACK TO DOING Z.O.E. JUST MAKE US HAPPY FOR ONCE.
pls return to your containment board
The barrier for entry to understand just WHAT THE HELL is going on exceeds the requirements for most PHDs.
Now. Would you rather have a Phd, or would rather understand what's going on in a metal gear solid game?
It was disappointing and unfinished, so people shit on it more than it really deserves. It was still a great game.
The people who legitimately think MGS4 was better must be severely brain damaged.
> Spoon feed
> a MGS plot
It's tough without one of these, isn't it?
Ocelot falls in love with John.
Unable to confess, he is gifted with by a deus ex machina with Snake's phone number. Never minding the strange area code, he immediately calls him, and is overjoyed to find out that he has a crush on him as well.
But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day's confessions to him, Snake only looks at him with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, he finds out that the Snake he called is not the same Snake he fell in love with. In fact, he doesn't exist in this universe at all. He is Snake's alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with Ocelot's own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of his crush.
Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective loved ones, DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the RULES of NATURE.
>People actually believe this
> Bottomless depths of plot that rival mariana's trench
Metal Gear Solid has always being a gateway vidya of the worst kind. If you faggots take off your nostalgia googles you'd realise that the writing is basically Naruto tier levels of bad. Go play Planescape: Torment for an actual vidya with good writing.
You could have made it about Venom, is
>But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day's confessions to him, Snake only looks at him with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, he finds out that the Snake he called is not the same Snake he fell in love with. In fact, he isn't Snake at all. He is Snake's clone, surgically altered to resemble him
>Unable to confess, he is gifted with by a deus ex machina with Snake's DNA. Never minding the strange ghost, he immediately hacks into GW, and is overjoyed to find out that he has access to the Patriot's network of AIs
But the anime videogame already exists.
The thing Kojima like the most.
What's hilarious is how his ever growing love for /tv/ crap is what made his games progressively worse.
Incidentally, his best works were the most anime ones.
>Hideo Kojima predicted the ass backwards fuck of society of having selective hearing
What can't this man do?
reminder kojimbles and nasu hit it off and he likes KnK
Why would you open with that? It just makes it obvious I shouldn't listen to your opinion. Or do the retards on /tv/ actually think their opinion is worthy just because they browse a board dedicated to tv and film?
Anon...it's time you learned the truth...
I love the original Metal Gear Solid trilogy, its good shit. But Kojima has become so narcissistic I cant wait to see how he fails at movies, anime and anything else, MGSV is the start of his decline.
Nasu handling the writing, Takeuchi handling the art, and Kojima handling the overall directing?
Hmm... a magecraft/thaumaturgy/mecha game with legendary references? Think Nitro+'s Demonbane, but set in the Nasuverse...
It's so crazy, it might just work.
Literally the ideas guy. I've seen about 30 different articles about him since he left Konami about what he wants to do now and his new great idea he wants to work on but never fucking does anything.
... you do know he helmed the FOX Engine development (which sadly stayed on Konami's hands, who use it for errything, even PES), and now he has an exclusive deal with Sony for a new series, right?
>> I never played metal gear
fixed that for ya
No one is ready for a Kojima anime beacuse we are not all on LSD all the time. Literally watch the first hour of gameplay of the phantom pain (before I bought it) and was like wtf? But it was a good wtf. Not to mention the man knows how to make crazy detailed stories.
everything from MGS3 on gets really really deep plot wise.
also have you not played revengance?
Kojima seems to be more of an Ideas guy,he used to work with another writer who many think held him back a bit for the first 3 metal gears, but he "disappeared" (funny yakuza stuff is the popular explanation) apparently so it got crazy after that
>yfw kojima and del toro make an anime together
I just want a version of ZoE that isn't boring and doesn't fucking suck. Even the hackjob that is Phantom Pain read like Hemmingway by comparison. Also, I need more Ken. The writing was some of the most generic mecha shit I'd ever seen, but she was an angel.
