Okay, so how many of you actually saw the kiddy crap like Yu-Gi-Oh!, Pokémon, Digimon, Dragon Ball Z, Yuyu Hakusho while growing up? Is that what got you into anime? If you havent seen them, what did get you into it?
Yes. Depending on the age range here, we grew up with Toonami, Kids WB, and Fox Kids. I grew up running home after school to catch Toonami from 4-7, then Saturday mornings for WB and Fox shows.
I grew up with them, but they're not what got me into anime. For the longest time in high school I thought anime was for weebs/losers and I didn't want to be apart of that (I didn't even realize stuff like Pokemon was anime). The show that got me into anime was Squid Girl and now I've been slowly watching more stuff. I've only seen like maybe 30 series, but I'm really slow and not that into it I guess, but I do enjoy it.
>Okay, so how many of you actually saw the kiddy crap like Yu-Gi-Oh!, Pokémon, Digimon, Dragon Ball Z, Yuyu Hakusho while growing up?
>Is that what got you into anime?
No, those were just "cartoons".
4chan got me into anime. Seeing anime pictures on this site on every board for nearly a decade eventually got the better of my curiosity.
I want to say it was Hellsing for me, brother borrowed some ripoff VHS tapes from his friend and said I might like it.
I later bought hentai from that same friend a few years later after I figured out why the girls in that show made me feel weird.
Canal 5 in Mexico aired stuff like Ranma and other less famous anime.
>If you havent seen them, what did get you into it?
I'm one of those normies who starts watching something after seeing reaction faces and someone posts the source.
I also might have started after my one friend introduced me to 2hu
Grew up with shonen shit like Granzort and Bakusou Kyoudai when I was very little, but what really got me in was reading Love Hina manga in middle school when I first thought it was porn.
Went straight into playing eroge after that.
Only Digimon and Yugioh. At the time I remember watching EVA and Gundam Wing, which got more into mecha and subsequently anime.
Funnily, I hate'em both now while Digimon and YGO are still cool.
Fuck you man i'm still mad at that ending the manga gave us.
I'm young enough to have been introduced to anime by things like yu-gi-oh, but my earliest experiences were things like *robotech*, the speed racer localization, Samurai Pizza cats, and maison ikkoku. Later it was cardcaptor sakura and such. So stuff like yu-gi-oh came much later and I never liked DBZ.
I didn't get into anime until I saw Cowboy Bebop in college. That was in...04, I think? It was when I got my first apartment, so sophomore year maybe.
I never was into Pokemon besides the Gameboy game. I had the blue version. I was heavy into Power Rangers, though. Power Rangers fucking rocked face.
Yup. I watched Digimon and Pokemon first, and then got into anime a lot more w/ Toonami. I remember when they showed Outlaw Star on the evening slot.
I love Outlaw Star. Oh, and I think back when Adult Swim first started and was way more about anime..that really got me into it.
When /mlp/ could no longer fill the void in my existence I came here. I lurked, and lurked. Lurked some more and eventually followed my dick to pick up some shows. That's how it all began.
I saw dragon ball z and yugioh
But i think that the actual thing that got me into anime was a chanel called "Locomotion" it was pretty short lived, but it was ca$h as fuck.
Mostly lewd shows on it.
Saber marionette J, cardcaptor sakura, mikami, agent aika, evangelion, crayon shin chan, ebichu, cowboy bebop, those who hunt elves, ghost in the shell, burn up, etc
haven't seen them. got into animu when in college I rented "japanimation" VHS tapes at the local video rental store. Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Princess Mononoke, stuff like that.
I loved all the ones you posted
For some reason Naruto did it for me, I was sick of watching reruns when I just wanted new episodes
I went onto youtube and found naruto episodes beyond where I was with subtitles, that's when I really got involved with computers and the internet
Rurouni Kenshin, and Yuyuhaksho.
Sailor Moon was on when it was my sister's turn and it grew on me after a while.
gundam, kenshin, naruto(zabuza arc) but origionally Priness monenoke that made me love
Dragonball z was gay in retrospect.
>let me tell you how weak you are and then scream for 14 episodes.
Pokemon was gay both then and now
>oh no, I was gonna get this badge but team rocket is trying to steal my Pokemon!
Yu-gi-oh was awesome back then but is shit in retrospect
>let me explain to you exactly what this card does in detail as if it's a super awesome card even though it's just a mediocre card that couldn't possibly change the outcome of the game.
Meanwhile, Digimon was and still is the shit.
>we're just kids, but we're in a strange new world where everything wants to kill us.
>these vastly overpowered monsters with significant influence over both the environment and other Digimon have one goal in mind, and that's to kill us.
Digimon was, is, and will always be the best children's anime.
Watched Pokemon and some Yu-Gi-Oh because it was on before Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. But that didn't get me into anime. 4chan got me into anime, first piquing my interest with Katawa Shoujo (I know) and then /r9k/ told me to read Welcome to the NHK and watch Watamote when it was airing. That was the beginning of the end.
>shounen series aren't kiddie crap
>Yugioh season zero
Is /a/ solely responsible for how popular Season 0 has become?
My first anime was katie and the caterpillar kids, the lensmen, bubble gum crises, my neighbor totoro and nausica.
Yeah, I enjoy yugioh and dragon ball z, but Trigun, eva, fma, and samurai champloo from adult swim piqued my interest.
I think I started devolving into full on weeb when I watched haruhi and azumanga though. From there on I went from dubs to subs.
Another blogshit thread, i might as well contribute.
My story is incredibly similar to yours, speaking about titles that is.
With only exeption about dubs. I just couldn't tolerate the horrible voiceover in my native language, so i tried watching shows with english subs, learning it this way.
>Another Mediaset offspring
Berlusconi was responsible for anime in the West
One of my earliest memories is watching Lady Oscar and later Magic knights Rayearth. I feel bad in the US sailor moon was starting to air and I just finished sailor stars in my home country and the English dub was so bad and so stupid, my sister started to cry.
Im not a mindless drone that my parents had to shield me from any violence because they were afraid of me blowing up schools. I watched that shit when I was 5. I guess the only bad outcome of it is Im here.
I watched both Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon and Dragon Ball to some degree growing up yeah, but I wouldn't say they got me into anime. I remember seeing Gundam Wing and always wanting to watch it but being to embarrassed to admit it.
It was Black Lagoon and every other show that I liked between the period of fourteen to eighteen years old that lead me to what I am today.
I went from Digimon to Yu-Gi-Oh (both English dubs) to YuGiOh GX (dubbed in my local language, but like, by 4kids so more or less a literal translation of the 4kids English dub) to YuGiOh 5Ds (sub, as season 1 was airing) to HxH to Gintama.
It should be noted that we also got ultra censored local dubs of HxH and Detective Conan among others, which i would watch until i reached the age where the blatant censoring of the most mundane plot points while leaving in all the murder and violence got to me. (like taking out Nen in HxH first season while keeping the head cutting heart crushing blood splattering gorefests)
Mostly this. I was never really into it, but I never held any sort of contempt or anything; I watched a few series here and there. A combination of those as well as the various Japanese video games I played as a kid -- Shenmue and the Dreamcast as a whole in particular -- is where I place the blame on my current state of being.
I remember back when Cartoon Network first started out, they played some mature anime movies late at night and I caught Vampire Hunter D (beginning with the detached talking hand crawling in the mud) which had commercials for Twilight Of The Cockroaches and another I can't recall. I also saw Armitage III: Poly-Matrix and Galaxy Express 999 way back when SyFy got its start and loved them. These were all during the time anime infomercials came on late night television promising that "Akira makes Blade Runner look like Disney Land!".
in germany they showed all of dna² one night on vox. i don't know why i was still up, it was 3 am or something
I also watched the afternoon block, and i always loved anime.
i couldnt stand cartoons where the characters had shitty proportions and only 3 fingers, i refused to watch this bullshit
I watched all that shit when I was younger but I never bothered with anything else.
It wasn't until I was 17 and watched NGE and EoE one after the other that I started to watch anime seriously.
>Hating on DBZ
Also, you don't know pain until you got sick of seeing Tree of Might for the goddamn millionth time.
This man is not wrong. I remember Toonami did a Presidents' Day DBZ movie marathon when I was in fifth grade. I was home sick from school that day, so I set my VCR to record it so I could pass it around to my friends missing out while at school. It only recorded Tree of Might and half of Dead Zone for whatever reason and then they replayed Tree of Might over and over again, so it was mostly a wasted effort.
I saw them growing up, but never associated them with anime until AFTER I got into it. My girlfriend was crazy into shoujo manga, and I read it too. Read all of Fruits Basket, then moved to shounen, and then seinen. Now I hate everything.
watched dragonball back in the day but never got me into anime(maybe thats because I was 6 or 7)
Few years forward my uncle showed me Elfenlied(was 11 or 12 back then), later Wolf's Rain and Hakkenden.
After that it kinda escalated and I never watched tv again
I watched all that stuff. I also remember reading manga as early as second or first grade, I'm not quite sure. I would have furious faps to Bulma's nude tits in Dragonball at like age 8. I was conscious of the difference between western cartoons and anime even back then. Somewhere in the 3rd grade I was introduced to Naruto and I became a big fan of that, then after a while I got into Bleach and would occasionally watch stuff that wasn't part of the big 3.
Watched BT'X, Zenki, Voltes V, and all sorts of maintream shonen as a kid. Didn't think much of it, but AXN shoved me right back into it with Gatekeepers, Steam Detective, Sakura Taisen, and a whole slew of other titles I can't seem to remember right now.
Grew up with Daitarn 3, City Hunter, Ranma, Doraemon, Slayers and other minor stuff like Ghost Sweeper Mikami or Akazukin Chacha, also Sailor Moon and Rose of Versailles.
Also fuck you, DM was and still is good.
I was introduced to it in, like, second grade when the local station that played the Ruby-Spears Mega Man cartoon replaced it with Sailor Moon. I didn't have anything better to watch at the time, so I started watching it.
These shows are for newfags.
I grew watching 80's crap.
My friend had Yu-Gi-Oh! books and forced me to read them. That was my gateway to manga and Yu-Gi-Oh! anime to other anime. I watched Pokemon and other shows quite rarely, before Yu-Gi-Oh! but it was after that when I learned that they where anime
1 year ago i was just browsing on youtube, and then i saw death note episode 1. It was interesting, so i finished the whole show. I thought that it was the only good anime out there, but then i saw gigguks top 20 coolest anime characters list and after seeing that, i watched monster, baccano! Code geass and ect. Now, a year later, i have conpleted about 70 anime. But fuck, do i miss the good ol days, when i got starded...
Toonami and 4kids/Fox from ~late 90s to early 00s, then started reading shit from the US shonen jump (naruto, bleach, op, shaman king, etc.), which led to checking out those shows in ~04, and everything expanded from there.
>Watched Monster Rancher, Digimon, DB/DBZ, Ranma, Sailor Moon etc. on TV
>Later on they aired One Piece
>Started searching for more One Piece on our first PC with internet
>Also discovered Naruto, Bleach and Doujin-moe
When I was around 14(2009) I found out about seasons and now I'm here.
I will always have dragon boners so fuck you OP.
Pretty much. Cardcaptor Sakura also helped me push towards liking anime more and its the only anime that I revisited and actually ended up liking even more then back then. Can't say the same thing about Pokemon, Digimon, Yugioh, Sailor Moon and especially Dragonball Z.
Why is this show so good?
I also remember seeing Beyblade back then and absolutely fucking hating it.
