I don't know how much that applies to artstyles, though. If something's profitable, it seems the first instinct for trying to replicate that success is most often the story or the really popular characters.

I dunno man. It looks pretty clear to me that the male faces are turning more and more angular, with their eyes getting sharper as well. Soon there's probably gonna be a bunch of Ramiel- looking anime boys in 2020.

As for the girls, they get tight-lipped each decade while their pupils begin to reach Shiki level.

If you're looking for an actual response, I doubt there's gonna be much of a specific trend, as we've apparently reached the 'muh diversity' stage, what with current anime taking vastly different approaches. If it's the majority you're referring to, I'd lean more towards plainer, softer designs since anime studios seem so taken to cheap production.

7 years ago cgi background characters would be unheard of. Now they're all over.

I know it has not been that long, but the way Hayate in HnG is drawn..
He went from a normal looking young guy to a bishounen who could easily be crossdressed... And now suddenly he has those horrible eyes and the hairstyle got simplifed.

No. The statements aren't contradictory. Calling for cgi to not awkwardly stick out isn't calling for no cgi at all.
I may find the vast majority of digital coloring to be inferior in quality to even the most basic low budget shows from the cel era, but it's not something that distracts me or takes me out of what's happening on screen.
