Oddly enough, with battle harems in particular, I always watch the first five or so episodes and then drop them for some reason or another. I've done this for years now yet I always pick up a harem show expecting to like it and watch it all the way through.

They have evolved anon, they start normal enough and haremshit get into the series in the middle for drama.

Most people act like pretentious faggots when they start watching anime and only enjoy "deep" and "intellectual" ones, but as they watch more anime, they learn to appreciate it for what it really is - juvenile mass entertainment - and get that stick out of their ass and expand their horizons.

That's the issue, isn't it? All of the "harem" shows don't actually have a harem, but rather an annoying formula that involves non-commitment with lots of potential love interests. It's the specific formula (thanks IS) that is disliked, not multiple romantic interests.

Most people I know who have weebshit all over their life found the current surge of harem series to be annoying and we mutually dislike them.
We do watch it for the girls and fanservice stuffs and turned our brains off, but that doesn't mean the current state of industry is fine to us.

I was thinking the same, I started off watching harem anime didn't really complain about until I noticed how much was being pumped out every season and every year.
Then I just learned how to watch it or avoid it.
Even when I do watch it, I just watch like 3-5 episodes and then drop it.

I don't mind them.

Usually I watch them for something lighter to watch after watching something more serious or dark.
Or because I find them stupidly humorous.

Don't get me wrong, it's fine to watch trite generic harems for the turn-your-brain-off enjoyment, as long as you make the distinction between those shows and shows that are actually good. Unfortunately the industry is obviously rampant with that shit right now, and its probably not gonna go away for a while, so no sense complaining about it at this point.

I agree with you on most points, but you have to understand what the target audience is when dealing with entertainment. Nobody thinks harem anime are art and one would be idiotic to even consider such a thing, but some people can think they are good entertainment. Which is the only thing that really matters, it's a subjective thing although not being the target audience and the story failing at what it was trying to achieve are two entirely different things. It's important to recognize that not every show needs to be deep, otherwise we couldn't have stuff like JoJo or Lucky Star.

There are plenty of anime like that. Out of the 40-50 shows that air every season, only a handful of those are harems, and the rest is a good mix of other genres. In fact, there's so much variety these days that anybody who complains about one or two genres probably doesn't watch much anime.

You act like the existence of harems (or CGDCT, or idol shows, or LN adaptations, or whatever else you might think is cancer) precludes the existence of "good" anime, but it really doesn't. Anime production isn't a zero-sum game like that.

There's nothing wrong with enjoying generic or cliched shows. Given the choice between enjoying something and not enjoying something, why shouldn't I choose the former? If you can enjoy generic and cliched shows then power to you. I can't. I'm not trying to be pretentious. In fact, I'm jealous. I have no idea how you can enjoy generic rehashed shows. I've tried. Id like to be able to enjoy shows like that, but I just can't. They feel like a complete waste of time.

If I watch a show I enjoy I'll get hooked and marathon a ton of episodes at once. For generic mediocre stuff I'll barely ever be able to push myself to watch more than one at a time, let alone finish it.

I get where you're coming from. I find some shows easier to marathon than others, too. But for me, anime can be more than just the plot or the characters. Sometimes I just like watching cute girls, or maybe I like listening to the seiyuu, or I might like the band that does the OP or ED. Maybe I liked other shows that the staff have worked on. I can appreciate these little things even if the show as a whole isn't that great.
