At least that sort of pre-Eva type action/drama series could still be fun in a quirky sort of way and the drama was kind of tongue in cheek and presented with a sort of knowing macho bravado that balanced it all out. You can still occasionally get those shows with fun/interesting if not especially nuanced protagonists every so often like a Jojo Saga but there's definitely been a massive upswing in just weepy pathetic male leads and their stupid non-relationships with horrible excuse for human being characters ever since Evangelion took off and the visual novel/dating sim scene that takes itself far too seriously started bleeding into anime.

It kind of went away for a little bit in the late 2000's and early 2010's but is now back again full force I guess as a result of some recent grimderp stuff getting popular and it's just kind of more tiresome than ever now. Having a male lead be all broken and pathetic and stuck an overly grim and depressing "welcome to my life" character arc doesn't automatically make them more interesting and their story arc deeper and more involved like Japan and dumb MALtards seems to think.

I don't know maybe this is just my own experience but I just plain didn't get into anime to cry myself to death over some sad sack characters melodramatic shitty life, romantic non-experiences, and ham-fisted writing where the soul purpose seems to be to try to jerk my emotions around in cliche and usually overwrought scenarios. Sadly that seems to be the way the scene still wants to go with it's more "adult" and drama oriented series.
