The whole witch/magic thing being fantastical is exactly because it runs against the social norms of the time, anon.

It was above average, but nothing special. They didn't actually do much with the medieval fightan except for show it happening. The whole thing about Maria losing her virginity but not really but still losing her powers but getting them back anyway because the power of love was dumb as hell. Or I might be remembering wrong.

It's true that the combat/battle scenes were really well done. Makes you wonder why instead of making their protag do impossible "cool" shit, studio don't use real combat techniques. It looks way cooler and better, and of course it's more believable

I liked it, but the pacing seemed a little weird at times (she was captured so far from the final episode you could see the 'revenge'/redemption coming from miles away) and the internal conflict Maria had when she was captured seemed very unconvincing. She never really doubts her anti-fighting stance, she just seems to repeat 'why do I want to stop fights again?' a few times and then strike back when she's rescued like she never doubted herself.

Most of the inner conflicts were kinda poor, the grandmother, Joseph, but Bernard randomly going evil seemed like a rushed version of what could have been a good side-plot.

Final episode was meh, too ham-fisted with the 'they lived happily ever after' thing.
