I don't think it's inconsistent at all. Code Geass had the school stuff as a part of its world since day one. Only foolish people would think that's inconsistent in any way, shape or form. At the same time, of course it's entertaining. That's what it was going for.

Lelouch wasn't as petty about any of that though, because he was aware that his own actions did produce some of their opposition. Just blindlly believing in him wasn't going to work. Both him and the black knights made mistakes. It wasn't only because of "sworn enemies" but due to various problematic events they couldn't really deny or shy away from. Hating on them makes you less mature than Lelouch, of all people.
