Is Ryuukishi07 finished?
You might know Iwaihime from its manga form, but it's mainly R07's newest game.
But as this news article says, in 10 days since its release it only sold 10 copies.
At least that's what the sales counter on its DMM page said. Now the counter seems to be gone from the page, so perhaps it wasn't working properly? Or maybe DMM wanted to hide the shame? The game also got a limited physical release in Toranoana, but most likely didn't sell much there either.
Be it as it may, the users aren't happy about the game. Some comments mentioned in the article
5000 yen is too much for a doujin game
I'd buy it at 1000 yen
Non-H games don't sell on DMM
No porn, betrayed my expectations
I won't every play a game by Ryuukishi again
Total trash... definetly this year's worst
It'll make you once again appreciate how much of a miraculous hit Higurashi was, so people who wan't to witness Ryuukishi's last moments should buy it... don't complain to me if you still regret it though
What do you think about it, /a/?
Also note the last comment. The guy says Higurashi was Ryuukishi's hit. You can tell Japanese are pretty angry with Umineko's ending and consider it shit. One difference from Westerners, I guess.
(I put some effort into this OP, even summarized a Japanese article and translated some comments for you, so reply.)
Not exactly http://blog.esuteru.com/archives/8504974.html
My friend told me that it seems like some sites (or general category? Hell if I can read this moonspeak) listed it as 1st on sales ranking. To begin with, with the size and price like that it isn't even supposed to be a doujin game at all.
I thought it was charting pretty well.
Also the art is pretty beautiful considering it's a doujin game.
I've heard some pretty shitty things about the writing from twitter, here's Hadler's review:
'If I had to comment on something it would be R07's writing. In one word, clumsy....
One thing that spring out when you read the horror passage is the way he keep trying to make analogies in the clumsiest way for example...
Rest of the time it's been surprisingly really dull so far, there isn't even the usual ridiculous craziness'
(Bear in mind he's only read one hour)
>'If I had to comment on something it would be R07's writing. In one word, clumsy....
That's always been R07's flaw, he's not a good writer. His works still have entertainment value on a basic level and that's more than fine.
It's a shame that Iwaihime seems to lack that entertainment factor his works usually have (even Umineko was fun when the meta debates/red-truth-wars were fully utilised).
How did this game come about? Was he commissioned or something? It sounds pretty by-the-book compared to his other stuff.
Japanese popular opinion is pretty bad. Naruto is an elder god tier show and manga to them, GITS sucks, Cowboy Bebop sucks, your favorite anime is shit, and the best VN of all time is Fate/Stay Night.
Only the dedicated few who are truly great appreciate R07s greatness.
I doubt he will ever top Umineko though.
Umineko is literally the greatest literary achievement in all of human history. It is the sort of work that 100 years after the authors death will be rediscovered and considered classic literature of great importance to world civilization.
The japanese think sales=quality, if naruto sold that much it means it appealed to so many people! That sort of thinking.
They also think of Bebop and GiTS as masterpieces, it's always been that way. It's just that kind of SF doesn't have wide appeal.
I'm sure they think MLA and White album are better than F/SN. Doesn't matter when Muramasa is the best.
Random doujin game by random guy ended up selling 4000 times more
What do you feel about that?
Hey thanks for the effort
It's normal that an author can only make one or two hits, you can't be original forever and usually take your best ideas in your first story. Except Higurashi and Umineko, R07 isn't that good.
That also says a lot. He's greedy.
R07's writing is awkward but he manages to make games with fleshed out and relatable characters and interesting settings. A lot of the stuff he writes is emotionally charged because of his character focus. Iwaihime lacked all of this so far. The characters are flat and bland as fuck which makes the plot drag because his writing alone can't carry it.
>That also says a lot. He's greedy.
Don't be stupid. R07 doesn't set the price or do anything related to planning, he was just hired by DMM.
I'm only saying you are an autistic retard,
It's like hearing a guy going:
OMG only Hollywood shit with lot of explosions like the Avenger sell, the plebeians are so stupid eating that shit forever.
Oh yeah did you know that Twilight was the greatest movie by mankind, it will be rediscovered as a monument of the film in 100 years.
This is basically what you are you stupid hypocritical shit,
>R07 doesn't set the price or do anything related to planning
Says who? Last time I sold a game, I had a chance to lower the price but let the publisher set it high and now I'm whining about the bad reviews. Eventually the creator always has the last say in everything.
I don't know what you're talking about. But when you're hired by a huge company (like DMM) you have very little say. You do what you're contracted to do and you get the fuck out.
It's the best selling commercial all ages game
And yes DMM probably sell about that much in term of commercial all ages game, the second in the ranking is Elder Scroll Online after all
>ranked higher than Angel Beats
>ranked higher than Muv-Luv Alternative
>ranked higher than Steins;Gate
I don't think you're right anon
And besides, how could they even have a top 60 list if number 1 only sold 10 copies?
Yeah. Higurashi was really preachy too, but Umineko's message was insufferable and Ryukishi couldn't stop throwing it in your face.
Ryukishi is a prime example of why editors are necessary. He keeps spewing repetitive verbiage that's a chore to read.
Probably, I didn't say it didn't
For commercial game digital distribution is only a small portion.
What is bad though about iwaihime is that it's a DMM exclusive that got quite a bit of press there, if you compare it to the rerelease of Sayonara wo Oshiete that was a DLsite excluvie released 2 week ago that sold 1000+ it's pretty bad
Higurashi's message at least has a context (the club trying to decide what to do and how to save themselves), in Umineko it's mostly Ange and Featherine spouting pseudo-philosophical shit
Not really, he is just looking for excuses
It only sold 11 in DMM, nothing debunked it so far.
That just mean that most people probably bought the actual game in store which is normal since who the fuck would buy a digital game when you can buy it in store for the same price or less
Go to the 2ch thread to have a field day, you'll see lot of complaints about the story
>there isn't even the usual ridiculous craziness'
I always thought that was the best part about his work. His writing leads you into a gray area where you're trying to figure things out and nothing makes sense then you just enter crazyland and everything cranks up to eleven and suddenly shounen battles out of nowhere.
That was the best parts of higu and cats for me. It felt like wandering through the forest and getting attacked by pegasi or whatever the plural of pegasus is, its magical.
>Go to the 2ch thread to have a field day, you'll see lot of complaints about the story
R07 should just write his shit in french instead, nips just don't seem to like his work.
One anon posted that already with the presumably OP agreeing with it; I'm not sure why people are still thinking that it only sold 11 copies. It's even on the 5th and 6th post for fuck sake
OP come back here and sudoku for this misinformation.
Okay guys, I just bought the fucking game from DMM, so if the sales don't go up from 11 now then the site is definitely fucked up
mfw Moogy will be forced to read R07 once again in order to get to his precious Romeo
>Umineko is literally the greatest literary achievement in all of human history. It is the sort of work that 100 years after the authors death will be rediscovered and considered classic literature of great importance to world civilization.
Surely no one really believes this shit, right? Right?
You'd be surprised, Umineko seems to attract some kind of autism
You didn't talk see hell till you saw a retard sperabout how Jessica is Beatrice in a youtube video for 24 hours
Which is why Ryukishi blessed us with his post-modern meta masterpiece to deconstruct the Christian religion.
I feel like Rose Guns Days did that really well too. People tend to dismiss it, because it's got an incredibly jarring start, but it turns into one of the craziest rollercoasters ever during the second half.
When it works, it works well.
You get moments of Ryukishi's ridiculously fun craziness sprinkled around RGD - especially with Wang and Gabriel.
But there's not nearly enough of it, and as a whole it's still incomparable to the sort of Ryukishi-esque writing from Umineko.
Holy shit R07 is a genius on so many levels, I feel sorry for people who can't understand the masterpiece of Umineko and its deep complex themes
I frankly can't disagree with that description.
VN's are kind of about who or what is trendy and unfortunately Ryukishi07 hasn't been since the late 2000's. I had heard fans felt kind of betrayed by events in the later Umineko volumes too. In VN land it's all about Nitroplus, Type-Moon these days and even KEY seems to be trying to stage a comeback by working with the kingmakers at Aniplex on synergy titles. What has Ryukishi07 done to advertise his products.
>Jesus was born without a father so it makes sense that I don't have one either!
Maria was really just depressing. Not a very good role model.
I kind of wish they'd just go back to exclusively playing doujin and eroge and leave the anime scene alone already. It'd probably mean a drastic drop in profits for the producers that have relied on obsessive fan money for way to long, but it'd cut a lot of dependency issues on both sides and really free up the anime scene to go in a much needed new direction.
I'd almost be okay with that if it means getting rid of a really annoying fanboy influence or at least cutting it down signficantly. It'd just mean that anime kind of goes back to being like it was before the late 2000's....you know when it was kind of fun and not just full of asshole crazy fanboys and producers that think they need to cater to them exclusively and pump their tires so they'll give them money.
>treating the people who make anime different to those who consume it
They aren't. People who get into the core anime industry love anime
>not just full of crazy fanboys
Anon please, it's either otaku or kids. It's how it's been before 2000s too.
It's more like people who aren't stupid don't need a retarded matome site article written by some random faggot to understand simple facts
Since you don't seem to understand japanese, he basically says nothing new except the most basic shit and he is also wrong in one part since he seems to think the only 11 copies sold was just a fake created by some antis.
But it's true that this doesn't mean it only sold that much too
DMM has two different sites for Iwaihime
This one, which currently has 12 sales
And this one, which is ranked number 1 in sales
They aren't the same. If you look at them they even have different ratings (first has 3 stars, second has 4,5)
>Not using pachislots sprites
Eroge doesn't matter anyways. All the high profile VN makers are still making them. Utawarerumono and Steins;Gate 0 both did beyond excellent last year, selling higher than most things have in years, and Minato Soft even has a visual novel by Romeo Tanaka coming out this year. None of them are Eroge but they all speak for themselves in terms of quality. Ryukishi as well has never done an eroge.
If I wanted porn I'd go play a nukige anyways, which I already do.
To be fair, that wasn't really Ryukishi's fault. He was only given the bare bones behind the story and characters and told to write whatever he felt like, promising they'd fix things or tell him what to rewrite later. They never did.
>Ryukishi will probably die in my lifetime
Why. I don't want to experience this.
The art for this games isn't very good. Average and generic.
Who cares? He's mediocre at best.
Why japanese otaku are so obsessed with porn? You can have all the porn you want for free on the internet why do they need a 5 minute shit-tier porn scene in every visual novel to buy it?
Higurashi and Umineko had huge a success and there was no porn. Mahoyo has no porn. I thought the cliché of the pointless porn scene in every visual novel was over, but apparently not.
I've been trying to figure this out for the longest myself, and ultimately I feel like it's really just tradition.
Like, you look at the 90s and there were lots of porn games and dating sims, and then you have stuff like Yu-No which had porn but had a really interesting plot and a full write up on quantum theory in it. Apparently it changed the industry forever, considering a number of the best writers nowadays cite it as a huge inspiration for them.
At the least, it acts as a sort of deterrent for a younger crowd. Admittedly I read Fate/Stay Night for the first time when I was in middle school, but for the most part being 18+ means you can write for an 18+ crowd and market it for adults and that in itself is sort of an advantage.
You no porn faggots already have all other possible mediums to enjoy without porn or believable relationship development. Eroge is pretty much the only place you can expect a couple to actually fucking fuck.
Well, duh, they can produce literal shit and retards would still buy it as long as it's somehow connected to the universe.
It didn't have porn because for popular franchises going 一般ゲーム is much more profitable than staying in the niche eroge market.
