I don't know anything about the source, but the show seems to have introduced too many elements and just isn't paying them any attention. It's also trying to do character building, but it's only doing that by ignoring other important story aspects.

the source material can transcend the animation quality. This show is well animated with a huge budget, but the source material is pure 100% generic trash. Konosuba has bargin basement animation, one of the worst animated shows of the season, but the source material is so strong it's the best selling show of the season.

Proof that when the source material is good and you have a director who can portray it well in anime format, the actual quality of the anime doesn't matter so much. Meanwhile trash like Musaigen can't overcome the horrible script and source material no matter how much $$ kyoani throws at it.

That being said, I don't find the story very compelling. It feels like pure fluff. Take this week's episode. Retard hair of the loli aside, the cutesy story about her inner world with bears didn't feel zany enough to work as a comedy, nor all that heart heartwarming for its emotional value either. To see how an episode about someone's inner world can be done in a moving way, take a look at the "Alice in Wonderland" episode from Ouran Host Club, or the robot girl's dream episode in Dokkoida.

Somehow the show as a whole has appealing elements, but it's sort of "just there".
