Yeah i mean, dragonball is the mother of all character degeneration. It's one thing that Krillin, Yamcha and Chaotzu become obsolete but characters like Tien and Piccolo, even Gotenks and now in super, Gohan, the character that surpassed even Vegito is weaker than Piccolo now. Vegeta had half a year training with a literal God ahead of Goku, but Goku still surpasses him again as they train together. If you aren't Goku, you're worth shit.
In other anime the supporting characters have some degree of importance but in Dragonball they're nothing. You can literally write Krillin, Tien, Yamcha, Yajirobe, Piccolo, Goten, Gohan, Trunks, Boo and Chaotzu out of the story at this point and nothing was lost.

Well Buu was too strong for both of them. Also in Super he not only squeezed some reaction out of Beerus (Goku never managed to do that without the God transformation), humiliated Frieza (he was already weakened, agreed) and is obviously considered every bit Goku's equal by Whis.
