Overreliance on rotoscoping when it's not stylized enough will look wonky, which is Aku no Hana's problem. Also it's a tv anime and rotoscoping is pretty toilsome so the result is sorely lacking in polish.
The Lord of the Rings you speak of was actually kind of significant if discussing animation techinques but as an adaptation it isn't great.
