ITT: Underrated anime
>>
>>137288141
You mean overrated. This show is painfully mediocre.
>>
>>137288141
Reminder that S2 is coming this winter.
>>
>>137288141
This is overrated as fuck
Mediocre remake of an ancient anime that only adds extra tits and ass
>>
Rurouni Kenshin. The praise for truth and betrayal overshadows the main series sadly.
>>
>>137288141
It's liked pretty well, though.

>>137288195
>>137288255
Keep trying hard, maybe you'll fit in one day.
>>
>>137288255
>ancient anime
You lost me there.
>>
>>137288219
I can't wait for the non-Harlock Gamilian almirant.
>>
>>137288346
You're on /a/. Most of the posters here aren't even half the age of Yamato, so they call it ancient.
>>
>>137288307

Except they're not entirely wrong. Calling Yamato underrated is just cynical. It has been beloved for decades, and the new editions did nothing to deter that.

>>137288286

This is also not underrated.

Just because you folks are ignorant of older shit doesn't make them underrated. It just means you need to expand your damn horizons a bit more.
>>
>>137288219
Also S2 is original and take place after the movie for those who haven't seen it yet.
>>
>>137288405
>Except they're not entirely wrong. Calling Yamato underrated is just cynical.
I agree, which is why I told OP it was well liked. The "it's overrated, completely mediocre" stuff just reeks of too-cool-to-like-anything shitposting, though.

Not a 10/10 but no one talks about it.
>>
>>137288479
Do you mean after the first season? The movie takes place before they reach Earth.
>>
>>137288141
>take a series that is perfectly fine as is
>add in more cute girls and fan service, give it a worse art style, shove in ugly CGI wherever possible

If anything, this is overrated.
>>
>>137288557
>add in more cute girls and fan service
I love when normalfags act like this is a bad thing.
>>
>>137288492

Well, that too is part of modern cynicism. Remakes, reboots, and such already saturate the western film markets, but now Japan in indulging in nostalgia bombs. Why do you think Osomatsu-san is doing so well?
>>
>>137288557
>take a series that is perfectly fine as is
Ah, no, the new series makes at good job at converting all the filler and non-sense of the original into a coherent plotline.

>more cute girls and fan service
Nothing bad there.

>give it a worse art style
Questionable. Matsumoto's art is quite unique but the new design are fine.

>shove in ugly CGI wherever possible
I wish they had hand-drawn spaceships, but way better than the slideshow battles of the original (except some battles like the final Domel one).
>>
>>137288557
>give it a worse art style
It's fine as it is, the CG is only ships and looks alright for CG.
If you want shit Yamato CG and worst art style look up this

>one of the most celebrated and influential anime franchises of all time
>underrated

???
>>
>>137288656
I'm not sure what your point is (what's the relation to my post?), but Japan's been indulging its nostalgia for ages. Osomatsu had a new show twenty years after the first one, Yamato's had a couple OVAs and I think a live-action movie through the 90s and 2000s, Tatsunoko remakes their stuff regularly, Raideen got two remakes, etc.
>>
Reminder that the brown girl is always best girl.
>>
>>137288811
That's a shitty low quality clip, that movie looks pretty good on the whole
>>
>>137288857

Sorry, I was referring to the "overrated" comments and offering another reason why they're saying them. We're not disagreeing here.
>>
>>137288141

Virtually any decent sci-fi show from the past 3 years
>>
>>137288921
Oh, okay. I still don't think there's any new reason to get mad about nostalgia remakes. No one complained about Casshern Sins.
>>
>>137288958
Plenty of people complained about it, it's fucking garbage.
>>
>>137288811
It doesn't matter how different the art style is, Dr. Sado always look the same.
>>
>>137288580
>I love when normalfags act like this is a bad thing.

Always a good sign of "never watched it posts"

The original Yamato literally had one female character. One whose purpose was a) fanservice and b) to perpetually be damsel in distress

It was shit. An obvious product of it's time sure, but shit. The calling the remake an improvement in that regard is understatement of the century.

The only shit CG was that one episode with Analyzer having a big mech body anyway.
>>
>>137288521
I think everyone gave up after LNs were discussed a few times.
>>
>>137288958

I mostly agree. I mean, from what I've seen of anime remakes / reboots, so long as they're not handled by Toei they're pretty good. Then again, I'm one of those people who appreciates a new vision and perspective on things, so maybe my opinion isn't valid.

I dropped it.

Brown and Blue go together, of course

First half is so boring, literally gay and painful to watch. Second half is fucking gold 10/10 anime.

I can agree to that.

Nip-pon Dora the explora.
>>
>>137294280
Yes. It is adapted from a real novel, not light novel, so it follows a very novel-like structure, but Japs aren't the most subtle at foreshadowing, so a lot of things will feel pretty telegraphed.
Still, it's very well-structured story-wise, even if the camping trip arc goes on too long.
Still, well worth it for the great art direction, great villain and fantastic musical score.
>>
>>137293401
It was popular as hell on /m/ for several years after it came out. It's just faded away now. Sad because it is worth remembering and watching.
>>
>>137294280

It is a ride, that's for sure. Most of the imbeciles who didn't like it couldn't get past the foreshadowed gay stuff, wrote it off as yaoi / BL / fujoshi bait and moved on. The author does a very good job of explaining everything in the world and how it relates to what you're showed.

Basically, if you're not a complete jackass, you should enjoy it. The second half is a easily the most tense anime I've seen ever.

Thanks, I'll try it out. It's been awhile since I watched something that wasn't a currently airing seasonal anime where I have to wait for each episode
>>
People will have some understandable criticism here, but I think the Read or Die TV series is a little underrated. OVA is great of course.

Pic related is my favorite OVA of all time and I've never seen it discussed. Not that there's too much to talk about. The manga is short and not even in the same art style, which is one of my favorite aspects of the OVA.

> reminder that Voyager, who own the rights to all of yamato and starblazers [the US adaptation of the original series], announced an R1 relase of 2199 [at one point even touting a dub for the 1st episode with johhny yong Bosch - for better or worse]
>reminder that, despite having the blu ray and DVD masters for the entire of S1, they have only released 4 of the 6 dvds, leaving many fans forced to buy the R1 release.
> reminder also that the official website [http://starblazers.com/] has had no announcments since August 2014, and their FB page has posted nothing but images of characters from the show.

>muh grorious Yamato
>garmillas are literally a proxy for USA
I sincerely hope you guys aren't watching this historical revision.
>>
>>137295333
>>137295305

They came across to me as a combination of Americans and Germans.
>>
>>137295333
The original Yamato was a love letter to Imperial Japan.
And the Gamilas were an aggressive race, led by a fabulous blond, who were bombarding the Earth with radioactive bombs in preparation for their occupation of the planet.
So it's up to our plucky heroes to reassemble and resurrect the grorious battleship Yamato, symbol of all things big in the Empire, to save the day.
>>
>>137295376
I don't see anything American in them to be honest.
Gamillas are commie-tier with German ordnung.
>>
>>137295431
We're talking about 2199 though.
>>
>>137295531
I'm referring to the radioactive bombings when I say I'm reminded of Americans.

Except the asteroid bombing of Earth isn't symbolism for the nuking of Japan, the Yamato and it's crew play that role.

At the end of original Yamato, the Yamato inflicts catastrophic damage on the Gamilas homeworld, genociding what was left of their race. They realize that they've done to their enemy what they thought was being done to themselves, and they only ended the war by committing an atrocity.
>>
>>137295431
but there were clear semblances of fascism and nazism in the depiction of the villain alien race. Which disapproves your statement since the japs were allies with nazis
>>

[has autism fit and screeches about how the original was better]

>>137295333

He hasn't seen either so he wouldn't know that the historical based themes in OG Yamato don't exist in 2199.

The two are very different.
