I'm not sure what your point is (what's the relation to my post?), but Japan's been indulging its nostalgia for ages. Osomatsu had a new show twenty years after the first one, Yamato's had a couple OVAs and I think a live-action movie through the 90s and 2000s, Tatsunoko remakes their stuff regularly, Raideen got two remakes, etc.

The original Yamato literally had one female character. One whose purpose was a) fanservice and b) to perpetually be damsel in distress

It was shit. An obvious product of it's time sure, but shit. The calling the remake an improvement in that regard is understatement of the century.


The only shit CG was that one episode with Analyzer having a big mech body anyway.

I mostly agree. I mean, from what I've seen of anime remakes / reboots, so long as they're not handled by Toei they're pretty good. Then again, I'm one of those people who appreciates a new vision and perspective on things, so maybe my opinion isn't valid.

Yes. It is adapted from a real novel, not light novel, so it follows a very novel-like structure, but Japs aren't the most subtle at foreshadowing, so a lot of things will feel pretty telegraphed.
Still, it's very well-structured story-wise, even if the camping trip arc goes on too long.
Still, well worth it for the great art direction, great villain and fantastic musical score.

It is a ride, that's for sure. Most of the imbeciles who didn't like it couldn't get past the foreshadowed gay stuff, wrote it off as yaoi / BL / fujoshi bait and moved on. The author does a very good job of explaining everything in the world and how it relates to what you're showed.

Basically, if you're not a complete jackass, you should enjoy it. The second half is a easily the most tense anime I've seen ever.

People will have some understandable criticism here, but I think the Read or Die TV series is a little underrated. OVA is great of course.

Pic related is my favorite OVA of all time and I've never seen it discussed. Not that there's too much to talk about. The manga is short and not even in the same art style, which is one of my favorite aspects of the OVA.

At the end of original Yamato, the Yamato inflicts catastrophic damage on the Gamilas homeworld, genociding what was left of their race. They realize that they've done to their enemy what they thought was being done to themselves, and they only ended the war by committing an atrocity.
