What the fuck happened /a/?
>begin production on what will be a revolutionary new style of anime using groundbreaking tools and technology
>a year later drop Blue Submarine No.6
>blow away every single studio with the futuristic animation that puts traditional methods to shame
>Build a gorgeous and detailed world applying a near hollywood touch to children's cartoons
>despite it being a masterpiece the community isn't moved
>your Magnum Opus is met with mixed reviews you begin a sharp decline to obscurity as a studio.
this was supposed to be the future, not the hell we are living in now.
>Gonzo's magnum opus
>fucking Blue Submarine
Literally how? It was a completely unremarkable show except for the mermaid and the visuals, which look like dog shit by current standards.
> you begin a sharp decline to obscurity as a studio
Didn't happen until well after Blue Submarine. Hell, wasn't that their second production of any kind? What are you even talking about?
Failure is not an option.
Let me repeat that,
if this mission fails,
if we are unsuccessful
we have no future
>make one of the best shows from 2015
You're joking right? Not only did the show look like shit it also had one of the most boring plots in shows. Not to mention MERMAIDS LOL.
Just because you personally like it doesn't make it their magnum opus. They've made better stuff since then, thank god.
>see Pixar making waves with their childish CG
>release Spirits Within with the intent of stunning the world will how real CG can be
>make an absolutely dynamite scifi-adventure with jaw dropping visuals
>turns out they were so stunned they couldn't go to the theaters
>lose over 50million dollars USD and bankrupt your company
>make an absolutely dynamite scifi-adventure with jaw dropping visuals
They made a terrible mistake naming that thing Final Fantasy. It was an ok movie and great CGI at the time, but everyone hated it because it basically had jack shit to do with with FF. If they wanted to sell CG-animation at the time they should have just made Advent Children imidiately.
>I see, I'm talking to the anime equivalent of a /v/ poster
No no, standards have gotten much lower now. People realized there's much worse than DEEN.
It was big enough for them to think slapping the FF name on a movie like that would work. In the 90s/early 00s, FF was basically a household name, mostly due to VII.
Kind of funny to think that a little thing like putting the FF name on something that wasn't really FF made Squaresoft go bankrupt.
VII through X were released in the previous 4 years so it was quite big in 2001. I think they attached FF to the movie name because the series had a reputation for having the best FMV scenes in those days.
What is this Initial D blu-ray level bullshit?
Studio Gonzo made Kaleido Star, which is one of the best shojo anime. Yet they stumbled terribly on Season 2 introducing the tsundere guy and the horrible Chinese girl.
The series was one season too long, but season one is still some of the best anime out there.
Agreed, Square Enix focus on western markets was a mistake, they still don't understand basic naming conventions like Fantasy yet do Sci Fi.
If the soldiers used magic, would of saved this movie.
GONZO has always overdelivered on style and massively underdelivered on substance.
Almost every single show they made was great for about 5 episodes then became completely uninteresting once it needed to actually follow through on having a plot.
Looking back GONZO would have done a lot better nowadays when every series is only 13 episodes so you can fake it the whole way through.
>The bad BDrip is the only one with seeders
The BDMV isn't much better though.
Last Exile was their magnum opus for CG, otherwise their history is fucking great.
Vandread, Hellsing, FMP, Kiddy Grade, Chrono Crusade.
The problem was around 2007 the majority of their chosen adaptions were shit. They started fucking up their choices, did too many shows that had no returns, fucked themselves sideways.
Their CG was seperate from Last Exile in meshing with style, they just went full retard and never bother subtly mixing it in.
From memory Last Exile had two layers to the CG which cost a fuck tonne in order to mesh well with the 2D.
Vandread was GONZOs magnus opus desu.
Last Exile is one of the most overrated series of all time and almost entirely devoid of substance. The world could have been something really special too if they didn't go full retard on the plot constantly.
Gonzo used to take risks and made some shows that I really like but also made a lot shit, when I read that they have been rescued from disappearing around 2010-11 I was happy but everything they've made since has been garbage.
>everything they've made since has been garbage.
how about fuck you?
GONZO specialized in boring ass no substance shit with good visuals, at least Vandread had tits.
Also, you knew what memes were when you were 12? How fucking young are you?
>Forgetting their magnum comedic opus
>GONZO specialized in boring ass no substance shit with good visuals, at least Vandread had tits.
Vandread was literally nothing. Like at all. I think you mean "at least Vandread had mecha". Seriously there was absolutely nothing special about it you couldn't find anywhere else especially back then
Actually I take that back, Seto is their best work by far, its actually a great show and I forget that GONZO is part of it because of that.
Not their best but I love this show.
I swear to god you could post any scene from this show and I would immediately remember the joke and I've only ever watched it twice
Holy shit, someone else saw that besides me. Really underrated. Only anime I know where
the bad guy completely and totally won and it wasn't a bad end
This desu. Gainax is also still making good shows despite being a shell of its former self.
My 2nd favorite anime, but don't kid yourself the CGI was really bad
love vandread, but it has not aged well.
Hey man, Dragonaut was probably the most fun I have ever had watching a series with /a/.
Its also probably the worst anime I have ever seen.
It had a 10/10 opening though
Problem with vandread was the waifu war had no tension. We all knew dita would win.
Another terrible Gonzo show I can't help but love. Fuck them for teasing me with the video making believe there would be a second season.
According to him humanities arrogance would unavoidably lead to them consuming all of Earth's resources and destroying the eco-system
So he pruned the population and created the chimera races to act as a counterbalance since they were much more in-tune with nature.
not enough mermaid pussy. lack of sex drives a man crazy.
They were all his children, and yeah Varg had a harem
Mutio even goes with him in the end
Mastered digitally in standard definition. No actual film to rescan when making the BDs so their only option is to upscale that shit.
It's the sad state of affairs for the very late-90s and early 2000s anime that they can't be remastered like glorious film master race can.
Oh my, just look what happened by accident...
Gonzo was great, its really sad now that they're actually working against good works by ruining shit like Trails in the Sky opening.
I haven't watched a lot, but personally
Seto no Hanayome>NHK>Blue Submarine>Chrono Crusade>Kaze no Stigma>Tower of Druaga
If only pic related hadn't happened, they would've been great.
Fuck the jews
So much potential ruined by greed.
It really is one of the biggest tragedy in anime industry
DEEN is the savior of yaoi anime.
All Hail DEEN!
>According to him humanities arrogance would unavoidably lead to them consuming all of Earth's resources and destroying the eco-system
Well good to see that's actually happened.
Gonzo sucked. Inconsistent in both animation and story development. Out of the ten shows of theirs I tried to watch, I could only finish two of them. The rest were so boring and slow, I just didn't care. They were BeeTrain before BeeTrain was established.
And you are highly delusional OP.
The CGI water and digital 'aids' in Blue Sub 6 were horrendous. The OAV was met with mixed reviews because the animation was jarring and the story was shit.
And six years later, they did the same exact thing with Last Exile. A show with a story that went nowhere and digital animation that looked completely out of place.
GONZO tried to be cutting edge. And it didn't work.
At least Last Exile had the decency to have some fun characters, nice mechanical designs and did a much better job rendering Murata's character designs.
I still like it, even if it seemed to completely forget that Claus was supposed to be the protagonist in the second cour.
The design of Last Exile (and the unique opening) are what got me to watch the show, after I had long since given up on GONZO. But even then, the actual show went nowhere. Its pretty bad when the opening is the only good part of each episode.
But it did go somewhere! They went to Earth!
In a setup for a terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad sequel.
Piss buckets. Meant to reply to >>137295867
>at Anime Expo 2002
>an entire panel just devoted to Gonzo
>various people from Gonzo are talking about their big secret new project called 'Last Exile'
>they show off the OP for the show and everyone is mesmerized
>"Of course, we can't tell you anything else about the show until it airs
>someone in the audience makes a joke about mecha in relation to Gundam
>Gonzo staff spend the rest of the hour just obsessing over their favorite Gundam seasons while lecturing the audience about how bad Gundam Turn A is
>fast forward two years
>finally see Last Exile
>all the things the panel complained about regarding Turn A are the exact same flaws Last Exile has
But Turn A has no flaws.
Maybe if Claus had been a delicious brown trap...
No, no.. would still have GONZO's awful CGI.
The big flaw of Turn A Gundam was the first 12-15 episodes focused on world building, but not much character development or plot development. Last Exile was basically this, but for the whole show.
>WAAAAAAH my free hobby should be better and not shit. WAAAAAAAH!
That fucking second Witchblade OP. The second half of the show is pretty much all about a single mother working herself into an early grave while some creepy conspiracy people are trying to amputate her limbs and kidnap her daughter. And then that fucking intro song played at the start of every episode. I mean what the hell was that shit.
The only good shows from Gonzo are Gankutsuou and Speed Grapher.
Last Eile was good at first, but then the story had inconsistency and went full retard. I could care less about the CGI DESU if the story was good.
Never watched the sequel btw. Is it good? or is full of crap?
Vandread also exists. And despite the people in this thread claiming nothing happened, it actually had more character development than your average harem. Probably because it wasn't a harem anime.
Junichi Sato, the director of such works as Sailor Moon and Princess Tutu, made Kaleido Star. Gonzo just fronted the cash. Junichi Sato also did Gatekeepers, but Gonzo meddling killed it.
Meia was best girl
Studios have different functions. They can provide animators, directors or just funding. For example, on Cowboy Benop, Sunrise is credited as the studio that funded it. But a lot of the animators were hired out from BONES. And Shinichiro Watanabe is a freelance director who has worked for multiple studios.
Junichi Sato isn't a part of GONZO. Yet he did the majority of the work for Kaleido Star.
After 4.0, maybe.
They provided most of the nip key animators and probably other positions, too, but I'm not going to check all the staff for the whole thing. My point is that hiring freelancers doesn't mean they didn't make the show, especially not when you're just pointing to one freelancer. Again, did Madhouse make Texhnolyze and Bones make RahXephon?
I can't hate Gonzo.
The NHK adaptation was great, I like it over the manga adaptation which went nowhere by deviating from the novel, and it also has an amazing soundtrack.
Also, Gankutsuou as fucking amazing, and Strike witches was pretty good too.
Seto no hanayome and Druaga were fun enough.
Scratch my first statement, how can anyone hate Gonzo, they did make a lot of good anime among their shitty ones.
I meant objectively speaking, because there are plenty of people with a bias.
There are people that as soon as they read Gonzo they immediately call a show shit, or at least it used to be like that.
I remember the threads. It was hated after the first few episodes because they did nothing with most of the characters plus the QUALITY everywhere killed it. They had two other anime airing that season, and I think they had 3 a season for that year or something ridiculous like that. That season was when they actually really went downhill. That year they adapted Black Cat. The year after they started to pump out real garbage like Glass Fleet, Pumpkin Scissors, Red Garden, etc. Prior to this, I would say their worst work was Samurai 7.
All people have a bias. 'Liking' something is based on that bias. You can't be objective about taste.
I'm not talking about liking (though I did say "hate" in my first post).
I'm talking about people calling Gonzo a bad company when they legitimately were not, or calling Gonzo anime bad just because it had the Gonzo name attached to it.
Don't you think it's a stupid attitude?
Since I'm someone who only liked two shows out of a dozen they made, I would have to say they weren't a good studio in my eyes. Don't see how you can really argue they were good to someone who didn't like what they saw.
As an oldfag who actually saw Blu sub no 6 when it first came out, let me tell you how it was recieved.
>awesome first ep
>great music, maybe the best thing about the show
>cool concepts and action
>holy crap cgi in anime looks great!
With the rest of the episodes though, the problems as other posters mentioned got apparent. Such a shame, the series still managed to have many great things but on the whole it just made you mad itcwasn't better. And the cgi aged badly.
Side note: pic related is such a delicious design, best shirt hair diving suit in anime ever. Too bad the character was a cardboard.
