I watched some Ranma 1/2 after years to reminisce, and was suddenly struck by shipping feels for Nabiki x Kuno. I didn't ship them at all back when I first read/watched Ranma 1/2, I had a different OTP then. But now, boom, instantly aboard the ship.
Has that happened to anyone else? Has time changed your approach to characters, pairings, or shows?
Also OTP thread. Or Ranma 1/2 thread, whatever.
I'm actually a little salty now that it's so old, since if Ranma 1/2 was experiencing its glory days now I'm sure the flood of fanart and fanfic would be amazing to experience.
>Ryoga x onna-Ranma
mah nigga, I'm not alone
Yeah, Ranma 1/2 was funny in the sense that nearly the entire cast with the exception of Kasumi and maybe Ukyo was made of total assholes who were all horrible in their own way. I know Akane was supposed to have a heart of gold under the tsundere shell and the show rode on gratuitous over the top violence, but I still felt she was a massive bitch.
But Ranma and Ryoga, they're both warriors, they understand each other
The thing that makes Ranma 1/2 work compared to other harem series is that most of the girls are fiendishly competent fighters (or just fiendishly competent) and complete assholes but also that Ranma himself is a complete asshole that has it coming more often than not.
I shipped Best Boy x Best Girl just because they were my favorite characters
It's probably a good point, never thought of that. It's true, it's great that none of them is an innocent delicate doormat flower but instead they all (I think) are spunky and ruthless and really fight for their goals, as well as that everyone's a bit of an asshole and everyone gets kicked to the skies or has their ass handed to them occasionally. It makes for this cheerful rumble dynamic.
Except Akane, maybe. It'd have been nice if she'd have had to face some sort of repercussion for always thinking that everything is Ranma's fault - but even she was a relatively competent fighter.
There was an entire Ranma fanfic database and a Ranma-exclusive fanfiction yearly online award 'ceremony' called the chicken-balls. You have no idea. Ranma and Evangelion were the online fandom kings from the late nineties into the early 2000's.
Looking back now, all of the sites from back then (or the archived versions) seem so archaic, what with the webrings and the crude html layouts and non-searchable listings and whatnot. But there's something really charming about it, too
She didn't intend them to be together, so she was pissed that the anime crew was baiting them. The Cave chapter was supposed to put the nail on the coffin on that ship. Plus Ryouga ends up with Akari, and Ukyo is heavily hinted to end up with that crossdressing fighter.
But Akari always felt like a character that was whipped out of nowhere to be a consolation prize for Ryoga imo. It'd have been more "organic" to pair him with a character he'd actually been interacting with functionally for a long time
I wasn't a yurifag the first time I watched Ruin Explorers.
I am now, and welp.
No one why Takahashi felt that way. I agree that Akari and that crossdressing ninja were copouts but only Takahashi knows. Ryouga and Ukyou would've been the quintessential B couple to end all B couples.
We can't have nice things.
Was there an OTP for Kodachi?
Did it suddenly hit you too on a rewatch? Or did you know to expect it?
I'm getting more and more worried and slightly upset about my intensifying shipping feels, this is frankly very surprising. Man I wish I'd felt deez feelz when the fandom was in its bloom and first read the manga
I wish Ranma 1/2 got another series.
They're perfect for each other. She's desperate for money (no wonder, living in a dojo with tight funds constantly needing repairs) and he's filthy rich, tall and handsome, she's devious and calculating but shit at fighting while he's a bit of a hapless romantic but great with the sword (he was reduced to a gag opponent against Ranma, but he's still very good and held his own against him in the introductory fight) and so on. She keeps calling him Kuno-chan in the anime and there's just something about her blatant selfishness and his steel-clad ego and pompousness that works imo.
There's even this video that was apparently the original opening theme for the movie with the phoenix and you can't tell me the shadowed dude spending romantic summer vacation time with Nabiki isn't Kuno: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zthZoFdSruo
Also I think one of the movies teased them a bit, too.
Yes, I've been thinking about this way too much.
same here, I just watched a few episodes of Ranma a few days ago after years and years, it still made me laugh and I haven't lost any love for the characters.
To me Ranma will always be timeless, as I'm older now though Akane's temper can be a bit annoying but I know its just a mechanism to unleash chaos and shenanigans
I do find myself liking Nabiki more now for the brains than in the past though
I thought to myself, "how the hell did I never see this?"
And then realized, it's because when I first watched it, I was pure. So pure.
I blame the internet. And you, Anonymous.
How did it make sense? Ryoga always hated Ranma for his curse and Ranma only took girl form with a different identity to manipulate him which only pissed him off even more.
None of the pairings really made sense since they were based off one-sided annoyances or constantly fighting. That was the main point of the comedy really.
I don't get why authors get so butthurt about stuff like that.
Ukyo and Ryoga were both the only sane people in love with Ranma and Akane. Since it was obvious they wouldn't end up with them, they would be a good fit for each other.
I'm not a fan of the childhood friend shipping personally. I actually hate it honestly but Yuuskue and Keiko felt right. This pairing made so much fucking sense, not only do you see the growth of their relationship but it does it in a way that it the whole show doesnt become consumed by it.
I cried during the ending.
Even the author thought they didn't feel right. You are emotionally and mentally out of whack with the universe because their ship was a rickety piece of shit made out of bottle caps and bubble gum.
Nice trips, but anon Genkai was too old and also past that pointin her life. Botan could have been a contender in the beginning but she fell off that boat. Really who else was there?
>their ship was a rickety piece of shit made out of bottle caps and bubble gum.
yeah I think pretty much. It's just that the core cast was so freakishly strong.
Also again, in the introduction fight with Ranma he's able to give him a bruise, so I think he got his ass beat by Akane out of not putting up a proper fight at all
>Kuno x Ranma-chan
On some level, I'd like to see Kuno's reaction to realising he's been fondling and lusting after a man, and not just any man but Ranma "nemesis" Saotome, the man who stole Akane away.
They were the chosen main couple, so no matter what they were going to choose to be together.
Same with Ranma x Akane, no matter how shittily she behaved, his love steadily grew because that's how it's supposed to go according to Takahashi
