It's one of the high points of anime as an art form. Very little anime has as much heart and emotion. I'd say only Eva (Anno dealing with depression), Kaguya (Takahata's swan song, a culmination of his career) and Angel's Egg (Oshii losing his faith in Christianity) compare.
The cinematography is matched by very few series, I'd say only Eva surpasses it.

Personally speaking, watching FLCL was my most formative experience in anime, forever my favorite.

Bake was refreshing and really well made. It was a really satisfying show and in my humble opinion nothing in the franchise has even come close to the quality of Bake.
