You know every anime fanbase has a bit of a complicated relationship with the TV station that made Anime famous in each major western market (Italy, Spain, Germany, France, US).

In the US, Cartoon Network had alot of censoring sure, and in 2004 they got rid of daily programming. But at least they worked with publishers together to ensure an uncut version of shows, and they also a had a midnight run because they knew they had older fans. Also its an american network, and they want to push their own stuff - just makes sense, that Anime wont be a major focus.

In Italy, Spain and France, anime was on the kids programming block of the first TV station of choice. Also this was during the 80's and 90's and nobody really knew how the handle anime. Some akward cuts and changes are to be abound, but in the end it didn't matter.

Here comes Germany, with the channel RTL2, perhaps the stupidest channel around. which started 1993. All was fine...Rose of Versailles, Nadia, Ranma 1/2, Detective Conan, Ranma 1/2, Dragon Ball Z all aired with little to cuts.
German Youth Protection realized that cartoons made for Japanese children are of no harm to western children. Violence and Sexuality isn't glorified, and children have no problems watching that stuff. Parents didnt care either, because there many child programmes.
Fans were happy and were eagerly awaiting Dragon Ball GT (its crap, but every Z kid wanted more at the time) and more Ranma episodes.
What happens? In the year 2006 everyone and their mother is informed about Anime and that it went through some bad censorship. They start doing a 4kids on shows like Naruto (people "dissapear" and are "hidden", 4kids style edits etc.) and on Dragon Ball GT they cutted nearly half the show out (heavily cutted episodes, skipping 13 episodes). Throw out every anime people like, replace them with crappy french cartoons and bad ratings are abound.
Now they are in the state of just putting bad reality shows and getting bad ratings.

I don't think even kids watch TV anymore. Youtube and on-demand TV is the future for most people. Anime on TV is pretty insignificant too because the internet is more accessible than ever.

It doesn't air anymore, RTL II is only Hartz-IV tv now.

They had better shows for a short while though, they had Megas XLR for example running around a short time which may isnt anime but is fucking great
And the really old Yu Gi Oh series which were just funny to watch
And, if I remember correctly, Inu Yasha was running on Viva for a short time together with Sailor moon, but that was a while ago
Man why do those TV channels always fuck up so badly?
>>

Didn't even know things like Akame ga kill or whatever had german dubs.
Then again, Samurai Flamenco has a german dub.

>What happens? In the year 2006 everyone and their mother is informed about Anime and that it went through some bad censorship

The guy shooting up the school happened which was unheard of before and started all the guns blazing shootout shit that came up from time to time. Everything was blamed and since the people running the station (and politicians) were old farts that thought chinese cartoons are for little kids and hence a possible bad influence started to censor the shit out of everything.
>>
>>137245267
Digimon was one the bad shows.

Detective Conan, Rose of the Versailles, Ai Shite Knights, Cats Eye, Nadia

THOSE were the real gems.

>>137245314
Viva had no money (Viacom killed everything except Nickelodeon).
Also american cartoons outside of comedy and for really small children dont do well at all.

>>137245433
They have tons of mediocority on that block really. No gems at all.

Woke up an hour early just to watch it.
>>
>>137245508

No...German Youth Protection still judged the show the same as they did back then. The shooting had no effects on fictional programmes had no effects (only videogames were effected). It was the TV Channel that suddenly did all the censorship.

We are lucky that german tv is allowing to air alot of content that is also ok to Japanese children.
Sword Art Online is considered risque in the US at Late Night hours because of the implied rape and incest during an episode.
In Germany that can air in the afternoon.

Also parents dont give a shit - they are plenty options on TV for kids.

Much better. I think they showed Hellsing among other things, the other shows I can't remember.

Yeah the politicians was sarcasm I didn't mean they influenced the TV stations. RTL2 did that by themselves, probably to avoid negative press or something but in return they killed their biggest fanbase over the time.

Nudity and shit is pretty much irrelevant in german TV but it's blood and any kind of violence that gets knocked down by the censorship hamer wth full force.
>>
>>137245962
VOX also showed Record of Lodoss War, dayum those were long nights.
Also Golden Boy on MTV. Good times.

Golden Boy, Evangelion and Lupin the 3rd were among the first I can remember on MTV. MTV2 aired Inu Yasha uncensored before it went over to RTL2. VOX had some nice stuff, Record of Lodoss War, Animatrix, GitS movie Dragon Knight 4 ever.

We got the french cut version which was cut about 6 minutes.

But yeah the german version of DBZ was very "edgy" in it's dub.
>>
i don't know much about chinese cartoons, but supposedly video gayman was pretty censored in germany
fps had no blood and shot enemies just dropped to their knees sulking
>>
Does anyone remember the name of this show that was shown on german TV (don't remember the channel):

Possibly female mc, something about assassins and bulletholes looked really weird on humans, like they were metal or something.
I think the female mc had a red or blue gun (all guns had a color) and was a gun for hire.
It was pretty violent and had some rape/sex in there.
Think it had a real shitty ending, I remember it vividly:
She (female mc) is walking home with a bag of bag of cat food or so and is killed/shot by another assassin. It ends when you see one of the cat food cans roll away.

I've been trying to find this shit for the last ten goddamn fucking years.
>>
>>137246510
Yes I remember, it was something that I won't tell you.
>>
>>137246582
You're a big fat meanie.
>>
>>137246430
>6 minutes
Really? Seemed like a lot more at the time.
But it was blatantly obvious that something just got skipped, as the narrator in the episode just started with "after Satan and hisdog were shot" which never happened in the episode before.
>>
>>137246352
DBZ was even advertised as being for adults and aired at 19:00 or something. They toned down the violence and swearing along with all the other shows airing throughout the day.

And as I said, they probably did it to avoid any negative press in combination with the school shooting. It was shortly after that incident that the censorship got into the extreme.
>>
>>137243164
Medabots was all the hype in my country. Dat intro...
>>
>>137246510
Sounds like you're mixing up Agent Aika and Noir.
>>
>>137246507
It's still censored. Something like Dead Rising 3 from 2013 still didn't get released here because of it's brutality.
In Modern Warfare 2 they didn't allow the player to shoot at humans in the airport mission, Dead Space 2 didn't have it's multiplayer in the german version.
There is countless stuff like that.
>>
>>137246061
True my friend. I spend entire night watching this and recording on vhs. It was awesome, NGE, Bubblegum Crisis, RoLW, Gunsmith Cats, MD Geist omg... good times indeed, anime was something unique and magical at those days...
>>
>>137246770
Not sure, just looked both of them up.
I know that the one with the bad ending has the colorful guns.
>>
>>137246703

No the swearing never was toned down - the violence of DBZ was toned down by itself (Boo Saga was very tame really).

Either way the violence in One Piece, Naruto and Conan is very "morally correct", and I'm sure there would never be bad press about it.

The problem is if a TV station wants to show rated 12 stuff...and really most channels do it.
Nobody gave a fuck.
>>
>>137246991
I don't understand the point of censoring. have you seen some of their daytime or even morning programs? Full on tits and everything.

TV used to be good until the americans influenced it.
>>
>>137246991
I remember Shin-chan creating a huge fuss when it was aired here.
>>
>>137246987
Dude, title you looking for is name "Kite". Brutal anime with rape scenes, you must find uncensored version
>>
>>137246991
lots of people gave a fuck, there were some pictures floating around where especially in One Piece stuff like guns were swapped with some rubber hammer or something which pretty much destroyed and kind of impact these scenes would've had otherwise.

>>
>>137247151
lmao, thats the 4kids version.

>>137247128
The first dub did...cause it had alot of cuss words and again was very "edgy".
The second dub was like a normal sitcom and nobody had a problem.

Also negative press isnt bad at all...it gets more rating if anything. The TV channel could just say...dont like it? Watch Disney instead.
>>
>>137247149
That looks like it may be it! Thanks.
