You know every anime fanbase has a bit of a complicated relationship with the TV station that made Anime famous in each major western market (Italy, Spain, Germany, France, US).
In the US, Cartoon Network had alot of censoring sure, and in 2004 they got rid of daily programming. But at least they worked with publishers together to ensure an uncut version of shows, and they also a had a midnight run because they knew they had older fans. Also its an american network, and they want to push their own stuff - just makes sense, that Anime wont be a major focus.
In Italy, Spain and France, anime was on the kids programming block of the first TV station of choice. Also this was during the 80's and 90's and nobody really knew how the handle anime. Some akward cuts and changes are to be abound, but in the end it didn't matter.
Here comes Germany, with the channel RTL2, perhaps the stupidest channel around. which started 1993. All was fine...Rose of Versailles, Nadia, Ranma 1/2, Detective Conan, Ranma 1/2, Dragon Ball Z all aired with little to cuts.
German Youth Protection realized that cartoons made for Japanese children are of no harm to western children. Violence and Sexuality isn't glorified, and children have no problems watching that stuff. Parents didnt care either, because there many child programmes.
Fans were happy and were eagerly awaiting Dragon Ball GT (its crap, but every Z kid wanted more at the time) and more Ranma episodes.
What happens? In the year 2006 everyone and their mother is informed about Anime and that it went through some bad censorship. They start doing a 4kids on shows like Naruto (people "dissapear" and are "hidden", 4kids style edits etc.) and on Dragon Ball GT they cutted nearly half the show out (heavily cutted episodes, skipping 13 episodes). Throw out every anime people like, replace them with crappy french cartoons and bad ratings are abound.
Now they are in the state of just putting bad reality shows and getting bad ratings.
It was fun until they ruined everything.
>Here comes Germany
Anon, Germoney is a cocked country right now. They have far worse problems. Degenerating TV channels which killing themselves with political correctness and other bullshit is just a symptom.
Who the hell even watches television anymore?
>people still watch television
I don't think even kids watch TV anymore. Youtube and on-demand TV is the future for most people. Anime on TV is pretty insignificant too because the internet is more accessible than ever.
They had better shows for a short while though, they had Megas XLR for example running around a short time which may isnt anime but is fucking great
And the really old Yu Gi Oh series which were just funny to watch
And, if I remember correctly, Inu Yasha was running on Viva for a short time together with Sailor moon, but that was a while ago
Man why do those TV channels always fuck up so badly?
>mfw they show "anime for adults" that have tits, ass and a lot of blood in them
Didn't even know things like Akame ga kill or whatever had german dubs.
Then again, Samurai Flamenco has a german dub.
>What happens? In the year 2006 everyone and their mother is informed about Anime and that it went through some bad censorship
The guy shooting up the school happened which was unheard of before and started all the guns blazing shootout shit that came up from time to time. Everything was blamed and since the people running the station (and politicians) were old farts that thought chinese cartoons are for little kids and hence a possible bad influence started to censor the shit out of everything.
Digimon was one the bad shows.
Detective Conan, Rose of the Versailles, Ai Shite Knights, Cats Eye, Nadia
THOSE were the real gems.
Viva had no money (Viacom killed everything except Nickelodeon).
Also american cartoons outside of comedy and for really small children dont do well at all.
They have tons of mediocority on that block really. No gems at all.
>RTL has the most cancerous shows
Oh god, remembering all those "reality TV-shows" made by RTL
Its really cringey
>There was a person that ate Toilet papier with Chocolate powder
And that was only one of those retarded occasions
German Writers are fucked up
Don't forget Viva. We had Noir, Gothic, Agent Aika, Ghost in the shell stand alone complex etc in the early 2000s. Also DNA² and Evangelion marathon-nights on VOX and Evangelion and Ghibli movies on SuperRTL.
>Detective Conan back then: double murder episode
>Naruto now: "we have to capture him," "he was defeated"
>They have tons of mediocority
As I said, show has tits, gore or both? Then it's good enough for that,
And that means things like AgK or HotD
No...German Youth Protection still judged the show the same as they did back then. The shooting had no effects on fictional programmes had no effects (only videogames were effected). It was the TV Channel that suddenly did all the censorship.
We are lucky that german tv is allowing to air alot of content that is also ok to Japanese children.
Sword Art Online is considered risque in the US at Late Night hours because of the implied rape and incest during an episode.
In Germany that can air in the afternoon.
Also parents dont give a shit - they are plenty options on TV for kids.
>Viva. We had Noir, Gothic, Agent Aika, Ghost in the shell stand alone complex etc in the early 2000s
Really? Are you maybe thinking about MTV? I must say I don't remember very well when MTV actually existed in Germany, whether it was the same as Viva at some point in time and what not.
Much better. I think they showed Hellsing among other things, the other shows I can't remember.
Yeah the politicians was sarcasm I didn't mean they influenced the TV stations. RTL2 did that by themselves, probably to avoid negative press or something but in return they killed their biggest fanbase over the time.
Nudity and shit is pretty much irrelevant in german TV but it's blood and any kind of violence that gets knocked down by the censorship hamer wth full force.
>Anime on TV
A dead thing worldwide, but the Italian public channel gave it a last push from 2010 onwards.
Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae o Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai.
Atack on Titan
Aria The Animation
Aria The Natural
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Romeo x Juliet
Sword Art Online
Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0
Welcome to the NHK
And how could I forget, didn't they show Cowboy Bebop, or am I imagining it.
What about Escaflowne, could swear that was also on German TV. MTV too?
And thumbs up for golden Boy.
Golden Boy, Evangelion and Lupin the 3rd were among the first I can remember on MTV. MTV2 aired Inu Yasha uncensored before it went over to RTL2. VOX had some nice stuff, Record of Lodoss War, Animatrix, GitS movie
Dragon Knight 4 ever.
>DBZ was very violent
I still remember them skipping the episode where Satan and his dog got shot.
>and also swearing in it.
I don't remember the middle fingers they edited out however, but apparently there were some.
Yes, it was Viva. Couldn't find a better source. And silly me I didn't mean Gothic I meant Hellsing of course.
Does anyone remember the name of this show that was shown on german TV (don't remember the channel):
Possibly female mc, something about assassins and bulletholes looked really weird on humans, like they were metal or something.
I think the female mc had a red or blue gun (all guns had a color) and was a gun for hire.
It was pretty violent and had some rape/sex in there.
Think it had a real shitty ending, I remember it vividly:
She (female mc) is walking home with a bag of bag of cat food or so and is killed/shot by another assassin. It ends when you see one of the cat food cans roll away.
I've been trying to find this shit for the last ten goddamn fucking years.
Really? Seemed like a lot more at the time.
But it was blatantly obvious that something just got skipped, as the narrator in the episode just started with "after Satan and hisdog were shot" which never happened in the episode before.
DBZ was even advertised as being for adults and aired at 19:00 or something. They toned down the violence and swearing along with all the other shows airing throughout the day.
And as I said, they probably did it to avoid any negative press in combination with the school shooting. It was shortly after that incident that the censorship got into the extreme.
It's still censored. Something like Dead Rising 3 from 2013 still didn't get released here because of it's brutality.
In Modern Warfare 2 they didn't allow the player to shoot at humans in the airport mission, Dead Space 2 didn't have it's multiplayer in the german version.
There is countless stuff like that.
True my friend. I spend entire night watching this and recording on vhs. It was awesome, NGE, Bubblegum Crisis, RoLW, Gunsmith Cats, MD Geist omg... good times indeed, anime was something unique and magical at those days...
No the swearing never was toned down - the violence of DBZ was toned down by itself (Boo Saga was very tame really).
Either way the violence in One Piece, Naruto and Conan is very "morally correct", and I'm sure there would never be bad press about it.
The problem is if a TV station wants to show rated 12 stuff...and really most channels do it.
Nobody gave a fuck.
I don't understand the point of censoring. have you seen some of their daytime or even morning programs? Full on tits and everything.
TV used to be good until the americans influenced it.
lots of people gave a fuck, there were some pictures floating around where especially in One Piece stuff like guns were swapped with some rubber hammer or something which pretty much destroyed and kind of impact these scenes would've had otherwise.
lmao, thats the 4kids version.
The first dub did...cause it had alot of cuss words and again was very "edgy".
The second dub was like a normal sitcom and nobody had a problem.
Also negative press isnt bad at all...it gets more rating if anything. The TV channel could just say...dont like it? Watch Disney instead.
Ah, I still remember going with my cousin to his grandfathers old room to watch Aika late at night on Viva as 12-year-olds. I feel sorry for the current young anime fanbase as they probably will never feel the same expierence when you rushed home to catch an episode of Ranma/Digimon etc.
This guy right here teached kids all about Japan, Anime and Manga.
He should have never went off air, 3 years was way too little
Wrong. Most of them don't even watch stuff like Yuru Yuri.
They don't even torrent. Instead, they stream subbed or even dubbed anime like SAO etc.
They might watch some Dragonball, but it's mostly because it's one of the only "acceptable" anime.
>tfw when they won't IT dub S;G0 cause S;G sales
Oh, well at least I can support them another way
Try to grow up in the Communist block faggot. We got nothing but fucking Russian shit and propaganda cartoons
Dragon Ball got a chance, we got like 10-20 epuside until it was canceled because an autist jumped off the building saying to his friends before hand he's Goku and he can survive the fall
Cry me a fucking river about GT
Pro7maxx is still fine if you ask me.
What else is fun as a dub of your native language if not ecchi nonesense comedies like Colorwars or dxd
Well if you say it like that...in how many countries has anime truly broken through?
Italy, Spain, France, USA, Latin America, Germany, Arabic, Greece, some SouthEast Asian countries.
Tough I hear the asian market is not even that big...I hear the French market is bigger.
> I lived on Spain for 16 years
> thanks to a neighbor I could watch German TV
>all these based channels
>all these anime
shame about the softcore porn
I guess everything goes into crap eventually.
>tfw Pokito could sometimes be cool(interview with Arina Tanemura)
>but most of the time it was just gay shit with some faggot nobody kids
Also RTL II started going bad in 2004...2006 was when it got really bad though
>tfw now it only shows reality show shit
not even super rtl got fucked this hard
>crappy french cartoons
Oh god those were awful
If you're gonna show me some french cartoons then show me something good like Lucky Luke or Asterix & Obelix not that cheap New Shit(of course Super RTL probably had the rights to those but y'know)
At least they showed some good shit like the 2003 TMNT Cartoon,Jackie Chan Adventure as a sort of downtime for the animu stuff but that didn't last long before we had absolute shit like Chaotic
Nah it wasn't. It was a Japanese production. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heidi,_Girl_of_the_Alps
Heidi is just pretty famous internationally and German dubbing has a sort of tradition of being pretty good, you could say
Speaking of Ranma. Did anyone notice that they mispronounced some names in the german dub? They were calling Ryoga Dyoga, Dr. Tofu Dr. Tofe, Shampoo Zampoo etc... I always wondered if they didn't bought the rights to pronounce them right, like in Pro Evolution Soccer.
Ah yeah...wiki says it came out in Germany only 3 years after it aired in Japan
Isao Takahata directed it
German dub is probably the definitive version
them feels when Klara began to walk ;_;
>Throw out every anime people like, replace them with crappy french cartoons and bad ratings are abound.
>Now they are in the state of just putting bad reality shows and getting bad ratings.
Don't forget bad italian Cartoons! Also crappy cartoons with toy tie-in like Beyblade or that Monster shit.
