Honestly even putting aside that Frozen won, The Wind Rises isn't that great of a Ghibli film. It was a passion project from Miyazaki stemming from his love of planes and his dad working for Mitsubishi during the war, but as a film it's kinda dull. The documentary behind the movie was much more interesting.

At last this year Inside Out definitely deserves the oscar it will get. The movie is incredible and nothing even comes close.

My only gripe with the movie was how the premise worked nicely with Riley, but when you apply it to other people, like the movie did at the very end when it showed the personalities of other people, like the emo guy (girl? Only watched it once in the theaters, can't remember), shit gets depressing quickly.

We had a thread while back about Takahata and how he refused to go to the Oscars as a nominee because he was too busy. Well he was kinda right to refuse because it is a bunch of circle jerks that dick ride on Disney and pixars with very shitty tastebuds that should be blown out. I would refuse being in that whole room of hypocrites. All of them are and not even understanding the great style of directing as well as the animation and aesthetics put into Kaguya and the Irish film Song of the Sea. Now they were both very good in showing great characterization and art that had its own old yet very beautiful style. Great soundtracks ( song of the sea would win), depth and rich storytelling. In short, the people who are in the Oscars should all do what the pic related says.

I haven't seen The Wind Rises, but the question to "why does [shit] do better at the box office than [good thing]?" is very simple: lowest common denominator. If you want to make big bucks you find a formula that appeals to everyone, returgitate it until the entire world has grown sick of it (which can take decades if your formula is good), then come up with a new formula to exploit. Rinse and repeat ad infinitum.

If you're interested in writing something that's actually good, you'll have to sacrifice profit and perhaps settle for only being good in one corner of the world, like 50s black and white French noveau vague films. Nobody outside of France cares about them, and even in France only a select minority of hipsters and old people remember them.

I didn't watch either of them, but I remember reading people complaining about the Miyazaki movie because it dealt with WWII themes, and that's kind of a sensible theme for americans unless it concentrates on the "hitler was the bad guy and america saved the day" narrative.
