Half the volumes have him end up in the hospital on the verge of death. The few indications of pre memory loss is that the outside world beat the crap out of Touma for bringing bad luck to them. He isn't homeless so things aren't the worst of any character but he has no money and little to no food to eat. All he wants is some kind of girlfriend and the indication is that the few girls who liked him, one (kills herself) and the other he can't remember. No idea what happened with Seria. After memory loss he plays along that he hasn't lost his memory and just tries to not fuck up his past life too badly but doesn't know what that means.

Hamazura is the insert character, but just having an insert character isn't automatically bad.
