The real humor is people saw it as "progressive" when it was clearly intended to be part of the show's overall theme of everything being weird and unsettling.
I thought the ending was actually quite realistic, "We don't want to deal with this shit, so let's just let the next generation deal with it" seems like what most people live by these days.
It was pretty underwhelming though.
