The aunt was kind of fucking him over, or at least didn't respect him as much as he thought he should be. She resented the honor associated with his military family. The MC wasn't going to stand for her insulting his pride so much. He was focused on keeping his sister happy and he didn't want to leave her alone.

The aunt is stressed out, and the kid is too proud. It's less feeling bad for the characters and more feeling bad for their circumstances.
