I can't speak for whatever metric you rate anime by, but I thought season 1 of Haruhi was really good. It broke genre boundaries without becoming avant garde bullshit or feeling like a messy patchwork tropes, that's not easy to do. There was no mushy "Kyon and Haruhi really love each other" moment either. Plus, there's just something really endearing about Kyon as a narrator and the social mechanics between the whole group. I dunno. The show was comfy in a really strange way, especially the music.
