There is a line between being nice, and being an idiot too. It was nice of him not to arrest Dario. But he shouldn't have accepted Dio into his home just because a guy who accidently saved his life 12 years ago asked him too. The fact that he released him from jail and gave him the ring to help his family was enough of a good deed to make him a good man. The rest was stupidity.

The problem with Evangelion is that it's so mainstream, that people new to anime skip over the hundreds of more traditional "teenager saves the world (with or without a giant robot)" anime and JRPGs, which instead of attempting to be realistic or anything is meant to act as wish fulfillment for that demographic, that would actually appeal to them and instead end up watching a deconstruction of such a story.

Evangelion is notable, and even remembered at all, for the exact sort of thing that tends to disappoint kids like this. It didn't glorify any of what occurred or attempt to bullshit the viewer into believing that a bunch of random junior high schoolers were even remotely qualified to save the world from any sort of invasion.
