Remember /a/, don't be rused by SAO 3.0 .
>>
>>136324381
Way better girls for one thing.
>>
I'm liking it so far.

They needed so much time to get that fucking goblin it seems like an MMO SoL.
>>
yeah, because this is scrub horizon 2.0 can't hit shit edition
>>
The setting isn't original, but so far its doing a wonderful job of showing the life of these people, not just their plot. While they're still anime characters and not amazingly well fleshed out, they feel much more like people just trying to survive and going about their ordinary business in an interesting world, rather than having interesting things constantly and conveniently happening or finding them.
>>
Nah, doesn't look like SAO at all.
>>
I feel like this show would be way better if they didn't comment every seven seconds about how they're definitely not from our world.
>>
How much damage can a single goblin take?
jesus i don't even wanna see the bigger shit they will have to fight eventually
>>
goddamn archer girls butt is fat.

this is basically SAO meets NonNon Biyori

"SAO" nice meme and trigger bait there friends.

The only thing that's innovative with this show is the use of nonnon biyori pace.
>>

The story begins when he dies.
>>

I see.
what a shame, i liked the character.
>>
>>136326735

He was too good but wasn't the MC, there was no other way.
>>

So good (SAO) meets boring shit (non non)? And the result is average watchable? Makes sense.
>>
>>136325630
That actually makes me want to watch it since I loved the scrubs from LH.
>>
>>136326785

The whole point of Soma(a based adventurer that will be introduced in 2 or so episodes) is that he wants to resurrect his dead teammates.

So i n the end they can
1-Suffer when it's impossible to do a thing
2-Resurrect them

So is it in a video game?
Because if so I'm really gonna have to consider dropping it. These MMO shows all suffer from the fact that they have the appearance of a fantasy but none of what makes a fantasy good be it world building, lore, politics, etc because at the end of the day none of it is real.
>>

i'm asking for better bait, we are /a/ here, there's a bar that needs to be met you know.

Even if it is bait I do agree with the anon. SAO is at the very least entertaining more so than it's other genres based on the same subject such as the boring Log Horizon and pretentious .hack.

I am sorry but I don't see any realism in how bad they are when it comes down to their own damn survival. Instead of showing us them eating shit they can show us how they train which they fucking should be doing because they are fucking crap and can't land hits.
>>
>>136328362
>how they train
We're seeing it in action. They all suck.
>>
>>136328484
No all they have shown is them going to the fights completely unprepared and acting completely fucking stupid. I get it the first few times is fine to mess up, but this kids have to be literally autistic to suck this much for such a long time, it's not realistic in any way for people to be this dumb when their survival depends on it.

DECONSTRUCTION
>>
>>136329115
The anime skipped over the part where Mogzo was picked up by an already existing party who told him to pick warrior and get his current items but they ditched him afterwards so he was pretty much broke.
>>
>>136328622
Yes, please tell us about your experience killing goblins, oh master.

>>
>>136329083
Mogzo die last chapter on volume 3. He scored with last boss
>>
>>136329260
Dude use spoiler tags.
>>
>>136328955
The anime changes a bunch of little insignificant things that make it seem a lot dumber and clumsier. In the anime it looks like they were hundreds of metres away from the goblin, whilst in the LN they are right on top of it.

The anime also redacts Haruhiro's internal dialogue which makes it clear they suck because none of them want to actually kill the thing.

>What’s wrong with us? Haruhiro tried to calm his breathing. Why wasn’t this going smoothly? Was the mudgob a strong opponent? Or were they just too weak? Were they really capable of doing this? No, they weren’t.

>Thinking about it rationally, of course it was impossible. Haruhiro wasn’t suited for fighting. No one else was either. This was all wrong. All of this was unimaginable. For what sake was he doing this ? Wouldn’t it be better just to stop?
>>
>>136328955
>>136329287
Adding to that, the instant Haruhiro's life is at risk, they get some motivation to the fight and it ends in less than 5 seconds.

As soon as they get used to, or atleast start killing enemies, they get their shit together.
>>
>>136329186
Yes because any sensible human being will scream at their pray so it can be alert. Don't try to defend this shit.
>>
>>136329260
If Haruhiro wasn't shaping up to be a good MC I'd consider dropping it. Thank god Ranta isn't MC
>>
>>136329339
That is the whole point of Ranata's character. The annoying idiot who ruins everything, acts on his own pace and tries to hide his insecurities with all that shouting.
>>
>>136329339
Ranta is not a sensible human, anon. He's a retarded autist on an edgy streak and he's constantly on the verge of getting kicked out of the party.
>>
>>136329287
>The anime also redacts Haruhiro's internal dialogue which makes it clear they suck because none of them want to actually kill the thing.
No it doesn't, it's perfectly clear from the first episode that none of them want to kill a living thing, and it's 9000% clear from this episode.
>>
>>136329371
He shaping up later, he become more like a tank. learn lot of skill. Vol 6 he is the best on his group
>>
Does Mogzo have any meaningful interactions with the others in the LN? He seems very much alone within the group.

>>136329056
Yeah, you notice how he keeps healing everything? When they start to break off from a fight, he takes the rear guard and gets knifed in the back and has no MP. No one else can heal/sufficient first aid and town is miles away.

Yeah, he's just a bit socially inept. Doesn't talk much, pockets full of spaghetti and all that. When he does talk though, it's usually something important. He also tries to mediate conflicts within the group whenever he can.

>“We’re here! We’re all here! Manato, everyone’s here, so don’t go!”

>Manato seemed to exhale deeply as if sighing.

>“No! Don’t go! Manato! You can’t go! Don’t go, Manato! Please… don’t go…”

>He inhaled, then exhaled once more. And at that moment, his eyes seemed to glaze over as if turned into glass.

So what's the class for shooting things with a crossbow? Hunter? I wish we could know more about how hunters actually fight, Yume's style is kind of, unorthodox to say the least.
>>
>>136330270
>The place where they dug a grave and buried Manato’s bones, wrapped in white cloth, would be better described as at the middle of the hill rather than the top. A slab of stone they had carried up with them was placed over the grave. It had Manato’s name inscribed into it, along with the token red-painted crescent moon. Even if they were trainees, they were still members of the reserve force and Manato’s grave was marked accordingly.

>Other graves bearing the crimson crescent moon symbol, some old enough that the paint was faded, could be found all around them. No small number of Crimson Moon soldiers called this hill their final resting place. At the very top of the hill was a tower that soared into the sky. It was a loathsome thing.

>>
>>136330840
Haruhiro learns choke holds kicks and a parrying skill and somehow ends up as a monk-ish rouge off tank.

Mogozo has raw strenght thanks to being a big guy so he becomes a good frontline fighter after learning his skills properly.

Ranata mans up after 1v1ing kobolds and learns to actually hit thing and is actually pretty competent with being an agressive little fuck and all.

Yume improoves her archery a bit but still only fights up front with knives.
Oh and she learns to use throwing knifes.
Still a shit hunter.

Shirou learns a panic inducing spell (which is again useless) and some sort of binding spell which finally makes her usefull.

Marry the new priest can use an endurance buff, is good with her staff fightin, heals properly when there's actuall damage and can purify undead.

That's for radio waves, not electricity. Metal is conductive and should probably burn you.

>>
>>136335866
Why do you want to know that? If you don't like it, you can safely drop it.
>>
>>136335811
what? no, the other anon is right the thunder attack will only affect the metal(heating it momentarily), resulting in some burns but the dmg would be many times less then a direct hit, so yeah if you are fighting a knight with some leather padding inside his armor you better use fire
>>
>>136335895
I need to feel validated.
>>
>>136335811
anon, Faraday cages are both for radio and electricity

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faraday_cage
A Faraday cage operates because an external electrical field causes the electric charges within the cage's conducting material to be distributed such that they cancel the field's effect in the cage's interior. This phenomenon is used to protect sensitive electronic equipment from external radio frequency interference (RFI). Faraday cages are also used to enclose devices that produce RFI, such as radio transmitters, to prevent their radio waves from interfering with other nearby equipment. They are also used to protect people and equipment against actual electric currents such as lightning strikes and electrostatic discharges, since the enclosing cage conducts current around the outside of the enclosed space and none passes though the interior.

The mage is actually useful once she learns a few spells. She can CC an unalert mob with a Sleep Spell and even an alert mob with high mental resistance with a Stun Mine spell.
Also she can fire a spell that can stun a mob for a few seconds. So she can keep 2 mobs out of the game while helping the party kill a 3 one.

Edgy Knight can only occupy one mob so the party can fight everything else and thats literally all he does.

Hes good at haggling tho, thanks to being fucking obnoxious.

Grimgar is only similar to SAO in the very basic genre assumption of having an RPG based world and people die when they are killed.

They need to fix the serious pace issues.

I mean I wouldn't mind if they were just stretching the material to cover the season more comfortably but it triggers me they are skiping dialogues with actual information (shortening the guild master explanation for example about why they have to become volunteers) when there are so much minutes of absolutely nothing.
>>
>>136336891
The best thing would be to end the show on a neutral note like spice and wolf did. Because getting "THE ORIGINAL BONES ENDING™" alike the infamous edgy manga adaptation will leave my anus burning through this whole winter.
>>
>>136336790
It probably says more about what I've been watching/my shit taste than the state of the industry, but yeah. Grimgar's hitting an itch that I've wanted scratched for a while of scrubs being scrubs and suffering for it. I'm not trying to say it's great, more that it's refreshing.

I don't know what the LN are like, but the GATE anime is... yeah. There's no real suspence in it, because it's clear af that modern military trumps all, the world isn't explained enough to base a whole anime on, so the overall driving force of the show is waifus, I guess. Or something.
>>
>>136329597
It's not even NTR when MC is a beta cunt that doesn't make a move. Stopping yourself from showing love is the definition of being a wimp, which Japanese culture have eaten up for decades. It's not a good thing quality-wise, at least judging by the first two episodes.
If the "romance" actually delivers they will undoubtely act like two autistic kids who piss themselves at the thought of holding hands. I wouldn't even call that romance to be honest.
If that's the case, I'd rather have NTR. At least it makes for some drama.

>>

Actually it was like this:

After Mogozo dies Marry went to drink alone blaming her self for not healing him in time.
Some dude she was in a party with once tries to make a move on her now that she's dead drunk in the street in the middle of the night.
New Tank walks in on him and saves her ass (he was also drinking because half his party is also ded).
Later he is introduced to the party as a potential new fighter and they think beggars can't choose and pick him up.
Now on the night after he joins he goes to confess to Marry thinking he might have a chance.
Haru sees him and Marry going to meet of somewhere and thinks they are a pair, betamax bitches in his head and gives up with reluctance telling him self that he doesn't like Marry that way (although it's obvious he does). Also he just lost his childhood friend Chocho who died so he's pretty down on him self all the time anyway.
Skip the next 4 volumes and here we have new guy and Haru taking a bath together and talking about stuff.
New guy asks if he's just a replacement Mogozo.
Haru tells him he's their new and permanent tank so he shouldn't worry because they all accepted him as a party member.
Then new guy sheds a manly tear and also says that Marry probably still feels awkward towards him after she rejected his confession to which Haru lights up and starts questioning hi happily.
>>
>>136339534

>>
>>136339632

>>
>>136339779
Manato dies to knife in the back by Plate wearing goblin sergant.

No heals remaining so he couldn't heal him self and nobody else knew healing magic or first aid.

Mogozo dies to big fucking orc monster because he fought it head on and couldn't evade for shit.
He keeled over right after the fight was won.

It was to late to heal him.

Nobody else has died so far.

Ranta has raised a few deathflags so far but he seems immune to it.

Haru almost died to Mega-Kobold, Beholder, Red dragon and a bunch of Orcs but ended up killing everything except for the Dragon.

You seem to think that magic trumps non-magic in all cases, but why? What makes magic so powerful that no one can stand up to it?

A good mage isn't going to have someone sneak up on him, but a good anyone isn't either. Put a good mage up against a good archer and the archer may very well put a hole in the mage's head before the first spell even goes off.

What makes you think a mage is automatically better than anyone else?

Because they have magic. How hard is this to understand? Magic trumps physical. You think an archer is gonna put a lowly arrow through the mage's magic barrier? Can your shitty shield deflect a goddamn lightning bolt? Or a coldsnap that freezes you to the ground? Games have to give the physical classes silly magical techniques just so they can stand on par with the actual magic classes. You think a warrior in a game like wow could catch/kill a mage without 5 different gap closers and random nonsensical abilities that reflect spells because reasons? You think a rogue is gonna sneak up on a someone that's actively looking for people to sneak up on them, or is just plain in an open area, without nonsensical magical invisibility? This isn't a game world, it's high fantasy. Why do you think Gandalf is the biggest badass in the realms? Because magic.

Mage>Fighter>Thief>Mage
That's how it suppose to work.

A fighter can't beat a mage because he will have to tank fireballs before reaching the mage.

A thief can't beat a fighter because his sneak attack will most likely not kill the fighter in one hit + the fighter usually have good reflex and instinct, so sneak attack are hard to do on them.

A mage can't beat a thief because, if the thief is good, the moment the mage will notice the thief will be moment when the thief attack, which mean that he is already close to him. And cloth+shit fighting ability usually means that one hit from a dagger instakills you.

>>
>>136348388
And that's another thing. A real mage isn't gonna be limited by janky stat balancing mechanics. A real mage would be as buff and proficient with his weapon as he wants. You close the gap on the mage against all odds, and you know what happens? He slaps your sword away with the magestick that he actually knows how to use and doesn't just have as decoration, and then teleports up a cliff. Good luck stabbing him now.

>>136348419
But this is vaguely reality, and as I said not limited by game balancing mechanics. A thief is only a natural check against a mage in a game, where something has to be a natural check against it. And it doesn't matter how good of a sneak you are, if you aren't playing a game you aren't invisible and thus not immune to being noticed.

>>136348466
I have been proving that the entire time; pay better attention. Your sword isn't gonna cut a guy that can turn into mist. Your sword isn't gonna reach a guy that can teleport or fly to a place you can't reach. Your arrow isn't gonna hit a guy that can erect barriers in an instant. Your shield might protect you from a fireball, but then you're gonna drop it because it's been rendered a molten-hot slab of death. Your shield isn't gonna protect you from an area effect

>>
>>136348814
It's magic; it can do literally anything and everything. Hence why it's called MAGIC.
>>
>>136348748
The problem is that you think in a world where magic exist, only the mage have access to magic. If you allow your mage to have access to teleportation, magical barrier and all this kind of thing, you also allow the creation of enchanted item.

So a thief will have access to an invisibility ring for example. And you hunter will have enchanted arrow etc...
>>

>>
>>136348884

>>
>>136348814
It's magic, it can do fucking anything.
>>
>>136348884

That's not what magic is, anon. That's imagination. That's bullshit asspull nonsense that shitty authors use to cover their shitty writing.

Either magic follows a set of rules and can be harnessed and controlled and therefore has limitations, or it follows no rules and is inherently unusable.
>>
>>136348886
True, I have been assuming basic toolkit for all parties.

However, we're comparing classes on their own grounds. Rogues don't just automatically get invisi-rings; Hunters don't just automatically get magic arrows. How do they get those things? From mages.

Meanwhile, if we're allowing magical equipment, then the mage will have trinkets that nullify enemy attacks, and shit like potions that replenishes their mana.

If we leave magic items off the table, mage stands above.

You're giving the mage incredibly powerful tools that are nowhere near their power in the universe the show takes place, or at least not at the main character's level.
Turn into mist? Instantly teleport? Fireballs that can smelt shields, so over 1000 Celsius? Where are you getting these spells from?
>>
>>136348963

>Take an inehrently incomprehensible force
>Try to apply physical law to it.

Yeah, nah; you're trying to make magic a game mechanic for the sake of balance. Magic is inherently a force you do not understand or comprehend, and you can do neither of those things because it does not follow the rules you're used to working with.

But even if we take away all of my previously listed examples of magic and try our best to find a real-world, working counterpart, magic still always wins out. Who's gonna win; the person with the sword, or the person with the napalm flamethrower?
>>
>>136348884
That is not magic you dumbfuck. Magic is doing things that are impossible, not being able to do every impossible thing. Otherwise why would mages use any of those inefficient techniques? In your fantasy headcanon, a mage would just use an instant vanishing spell on any enemies to male them disappear from reality.

>>
>>136349192
As I just said, even if you ignore all the classic examples of magic a mage can pull off, we've already had a mage in the story flash-freeze orcs to completely immobilize them.

>>136349282
The entire point of magic is breaking the rules. We're comparing combat techniques in a world where magic exists; the real world equivalent would be a swat team fighting a bunch of tribesmen, and even that doesn't properly account for the fact that you can still explain everything the swat team has and how it works. You can't do that with magic, thus you can't limit it by what you know.
>>
>>136348067
She's really quite lewd the more I look at her.
>>
>>136349382
>The entire point of magic is breaking the rules.

What rules? If magic is to exist it must have rules, or it cannot exist. If it has rules it can be studied and used effectively. Without rules it cannot even exist, let alone be used. Your entire argument makes no sense.
>>
>>136349382
Magic in fantasy systems is usually understood in some way. There are systems like mana, characters have to take certain actions to use it, it has limited power, etc.
If magic worked in the way you describe here, mages would be intensely dangerous creatures, able to kill hundreds or simply erase the world at a whim. They would essentially be gods in human form. This isn't practical for fantasy settings, so magic is given rules.

In volume 2 they fight some other caster of higher level than our resident shitter and the priest jumps through her fire barrier without dying.

>>
>>136349442

Yeah, that's a rule. And magic breaks those.

>>136349476
And as I keep saying, even if we ignore how magic would actually (probably) work if not balanced for the sake of story integrity or gameplay, it would still be able to output anomalies that are beyond the range of normal interaction. Again, I make the sword vs flamethrower comparison. This entire argument started with someone asking what the strongest class was in this series. In this world that adheres to normal physical law, except for in the instance of magic being a thing, the answer is, obviously and undoubtedly, the one that manipulates that which is an exception to normal physical law.

That caster's entire party, save Mary and another guy, got wiped by a boss which Haru killed pretty much solo, after they had just finished fighting said wiped party in skeleton form. That was not a high level mage; they were really closer to the level of the main cast at the time of Manato's death.

Come on, Haru repeatedly says he killed the boss through sheer dumb unfiltered luck. They were all going to get killed and RNGesus smiled upon him so that he could crit the boss out of nowhere.
>>
>>136349682
The better question is what's so wrong with you that you think a fictitious force made specifically to ignore/overwrite natural law wouldn't be able to do just that?
>>
>>136349802
Dumb luck that he got the line, yes, but he wouldn't have got the line period if he straight-up wasn't strong enough to act on it.
>>
>>136349804

I'm perfectly OK with fictional forces existing in a fictional universe. In every fictional universe, magic is governed by rules, and a good writer holds his characters and his magic to those rules.

Name one fictional universe in which not only do rules regarding magic not exist, but are intrinsically unknowable.
>>
>>136349793
I can admit that at high levels mages might be better than fighters (even though we have nothing to believe that's true) but clearly at low level this isn't the case, and I'd even say fighters are stronger than casters at this point in their story.
>>
>>136349682
There's a fucking lich king in the setting, and the curse that makes people wake up as zombies after 3 days sure as fuck doesn't follow any rules either.
>>
>>136349845
The other party was doing better against Deathpatch than our boys, surely they could have killed him too if the thief had gotten the line. The line is just plain OP.
>>
>>136349642
Magic breaks physical rules (Teleportation, creating fire from nothing etc...), magic can't break magic rules. (If in your universe, a mage have to say an incantation to cast a spell, there's is no such thing as "I cast a spell that makes me able to instantly cast spell without incantation and no mana cost", and if you can do that then your univers was created by a 5 year old).

So is the magic system here based on anything or does the author make shit up as he goes along?
>>
>>136349912
How do you know that? Do we know what sort of ritual the lich had to do to cast this curse?
>>
>>136349912

Why do you say that, anon? Because you don't know what the rules are? I don't know what the rules regarding gravity are, but I sure as fuck have to live within the confines of them. It is the job of any author to make sure his world follows internally consistent logic, otherwise the reader will just be yelling "Bullshit!" the entire time.

Let's approach the subject another way: If there existed a universe in which magic had no rules, one could simply acquire magic (because I said so), become infinitely powerful (because I said so) and then unmake all of existence (because I said so). Such a universe wouldn't exist for very long.
>>
>>136349949
They were pretty even I'd say. Other party did more damage overall most likely, but main party was significantly more worn down when they started.
>>
>>136350021
It was the fuck's dying curse, no damned ritual for it.
>>
Is Ranta going to be a Lich, or is that an entirely different class
>>
>>136350043
True that. We will never know what Deathpatch's third phase was.
>>
>>136350152
There. He probably drained out the remainder of his life to cast the curse. That makes sense.

Mushoku Tensei, where--beyond the basic overarching disciplines on how you make the effects manifest--it has been said that magic is pretty much "believe you can do it hard enough and it'll happen."

Magic rules aren't really rules; they're usually more like glitch reproduction. You wave your hands this way, chant this nonsense, and reality hiccups in a very specific way. Just because you figured out how to make that happen doesn't mean you understand the underlying code that makes up reality, and how that action manipulates that code in such a way that that effect is produced.

You give magic limitations for exactly the reasons you said--because you're a good writher or game designer and you want your game to be balanced or your story to actually happen instead of being magic'd into early conclusion. But there is no reason to assume that, were magic actually a thing, it would follow any sort of law that we could interpret. And thus, there's no reason to assume that it would not be able to produce whatever effect you could imagine.
>>
>>136350305
There's mana in that though.
>>
>>136350385
Doesn't stop the MC from manipulating gravity, going back in time, etc.
>>
>>136350542
Well then, if world-breaking glitches are so easily reproduced why isn't everyone doing them? And if everyone is doing them, what's the point of a narrative which boils down to kids playing "I kill you" "No I cast barrier and it bounces and kills you"
>>
>>136350630
Because good writers give THEIR PARTICULAR BRAND of magic rules so it doesn't break their narrative/game. How many times do we have to go over this?
>>
>>136350305
>>136350542
But there's mana, and it's clearly using natural phenomena to create magic. Magic has rules, and simply "believing you can do something" doesn't mean anything.
To use gravity or time travel, Future Rudeus had to study for ages, and he still had to understand the concept. It has rules, even if all of them aren't explicit.

To put it in the context of programming and computers:
Chanted magic are like shell commands
Voiceless magic are like scripting
And Magic Circles are like assembly programming.

On all of them, you're effectively telling the mana "how to do this".
It's not really unique, and is a standard magic system, with extra background details.

If you want a system of magic that doesn't have rules beyond "think this, do that", there's "E? Heibon Desu yo??" where the only "rule" is that there's limited mana.
>>
>>136350871
And then, iirc, present Rudi randomly does it spur of the moment to keep his kid from hitting the floor. Even if you have to follow certain laws to get there, the system still allows you to produce whatever effect you want.

If you mean the system isn't limited in application, sure.

I was wondering why the water flowing through the town was so clean, then I read the LN.

"Muddy water flowed down narrow waterways along both sides of the broad road, but not in any great amount. Now and then, a stench that might have been human waste filled their noses, but after a while of walking no one seemed to notice it anymore."

Not really. The action itself is automatic and has nothing to do with strength. As his thief teacher stated, any thief with some experience will pull it off at some point.

What's each person thinking?
>>
>>136349642
>And as I keep saying, even if we ignore how magic would actually (probably) work if not balanced for the sake of story integrity or gameplay, it would still be able to output anomalies that are beyond the range of normal interaction
And that's bullshit. Where is this ever a thing? Magic is usually weak as fuck or extremely limited in both myth and as described in "magical" grimoires. There are also always rules that apply to magic, which is why some descriptions of rituals state a need for a lot of ingredients, tools, days or months of preparation and so on. Magic has never been some kind of stupid all-powerful bullshit outside of some really shitty modern fiction.
>>
>>136350305
>"believe you can do it hard enough and it'll happen."
That's not what is said. The point was that with research and experimentation, it was possible to use magic to do nearly anything. You can't just will random magic into existence. It's why studying magic usually takes years, why it's possible to apply modern physics to increase the effectiveness of spells and why Old Rudy stated that he made a mistake while making the time travel spell, which cost him most of his organs (implying that the spell is a product of study, not random bullshittery).
