Rahxephon is a nearly empty exercise of style. It tries to do the same as Eva but it doesn't realize Eva's apparent plot is just a container of Shinji's internal journey, and all the Eva's imagery works towards that goal. Meanwhile, Rahxephon does take it's plot seriously and puts all the effort at telling its intricate story about inter-dimensional ancient aliens and evil corporations, throwing tons of cool imagery in the mix just for the sake of looking cool.

Hell, as I stated in my spoiler, the entire reason for Haruka and Ayato to have conflict is contrived, because somebody could just say why he was part Mu. There was no reason Haruka was the only person who could tell him: his father could just say that he was an experiment over here without bringing up Haruka. Ayato would have never lost trust in Haruka, and then half the show filled with will-he-or-won't-he shit wouldn't have happened.
