I just need to understand why the fuck they act the way they do. I guess I can accept that some people might just be "like that", but the line between a device and a character in my opinion is comprehension. They don't have to be likeable, I don't really need to relate to them, but I want some explanation instead of some handwave.

you need a proper balance of tsun and dere.

The tsundere cannot be a straight up bitch who treats the hero like shit for no reason and the tsunness needs to be played more comical or as a direct result of the heroine becoming embarrassed. pic related is Claire from Blade Dance, who is the literal worst.

The first thing she does is bitch out the hero for saving her life.

Then she breaks into a sealed shrine and needs to be rescued again because she got in over her head because she's a stupid bitch. THEN after the hero saves her once more she demands he be her slave on the spot. THEN she throws tantrum after tantrum, nearly gets everyone killed at least once more.

THEN she has a screaming tantrum and kicks the hero out into the cold because he had the nerve to be friends with someone else.

Claire is in a class for problem children and not necessarily a class full of kids who have the worst scores. And even if it is a dumb decision, she still wants to try because has confidence and is burning with determination.

Claire wasn't stealing. She knows about the sword's history that's common knowledge so the sword itself doesn't belong to the school. A person worthy enough can subdue the sword then they become the owner. It's that sort thing. From her perspective, Kamito got in the way and robbed her of any possible chance of winning over Spirit Est. She got angry and blamed him, and that's how their relationship begin.

Slander. Claire kept a tight rein on her servant in the early story, but mid way and towards the end the rein loosen up and Claire showed weakness when face with threat of Kamito getting taken away from her. But she does get touchy about the idea of Kamito getting taken away from her. She acts like a clingy child whose precious toy she loves a lot, but hides her feelings for is going to be stolen from her. But she doesn't act bitchy to other girls except maybe Rinslet whom she has a rivalry with, but that goes two ways since Rinslet does the same.

Her bitchiness severely diminishes over time as she grows closer to Kamito. In the end, she is glad she met Kamito. The consideration and sincere affectionate feelings for him is clear as day.

She has reasons behind her tsun that relates to her personality and adequate development that's neither rushed nor lacking with Kamito that makes the bond between them believable. She steadily progresses to dere, plus she is hella cute. Add that up and you have an above decent tsundere.

Look, your bias is transparent. There's no point in furthering arguing with you. We can sum it up with agree to disagree, but I believe it's clear who has the weaker position here.
