Firefighters are stuck in one city. They want to save the world. That requires more than just being a fire fighter. They had to be more than that. Was it really possible to save the world in the end? Probably. But with Shirou's and Kerry's power, they wouldn't be able to. They need more than that as well.

Shirou volunteered at the school a lot, had a part time job that he willingly did a lot of overtime for, and helped out Taiga's father with repairing bikes and such. He did a fair bit, considering he was still a full student.

Problem is, that wasn't enough. Shirou wanted to replicate the feeling Kerry had on the day he was saved, which takes some serious shit going down.

Basically, being a firefighter is too small for him.
