I truly think the original series + EoE are a respectful piece of art that has tons of different meanings and interpretations.

I do think the Rebuild films are hack works, tho, especially 3.33.

The entire film makes no sense IN-UNIVERSE. They simply ignore things that happened in the previous film or in the same film, and outright tell the viewer that things happened differently when they didn't. This isn't your average Evangelion convoluted plot, this is just hack "look how confusing this all is! must be smart!" writing.
