In the Second Sino-Japanese War and World War II, the army and navy of Imperial Japan not only followed the standard practice of having a bayonet for every rifle, they were also one of the last hold-outs in the use of sword bayonets instead of switching to the knife type (perhaps because their involvement in World War I didn't include trench warfare).

Moreover, they took the unusual but not unique step of putting bayonets on their submachine guns, and the entirely unique step of putting bayonets on light machine guns.

Needless to say, this could hardly be less practical (an LMG is way too heavy and bulky to effectively thrust like a spear), but it reflected the general obsession with blades and melee combat that resulted from the Japanese ultra-nationalists' attempt to revive samurai culture.

How well would a bayonet do against Roman steel, given modern metallurgy? Would it just go through like butter or would it blunt after a few stabs?

That and Bayonets on long rifles are a great tactical option.

The Brits have been doing Bayone charges way before and way after the Japs. They seem to have a good one in every war. In the Falklands their Marines skewered many Argies and in Iraq a platoon that got ambushed by the Taliban and then ran out of ammo decided to bayonet rush the ragheads, resulting in 35 Talibanies shanked and no dead or wounded brits.

Dont underestimate a good Bayonet charge.

You mean don't underestimate fucking spears.

>The spear has been used throughout human history both as a hunting and fishing tool and as a weapon. Along with the axe, knife, and club it is one of the earliest and most important tools developed by early humans. As a weapon, it may be wielded with either one hand or two. It was used in virtually every conflict up until the modern era, where even then it continues on in the form of the bayonet, and is probably the most commonly used weapon in history.

Thing is, if they were in the SDF's position they would actually have bombed the capital into rubble. They can't comprehend why the Japanese haven't done it, and the conclusion that some of them came to is that Japan is bluffing and is hiding some secret weakness that would prevent them from actually destroying the empire.

>>
>>136222658
The halberd is a polearm, like the spear.

Polearms are great too (if the enemy has X weapon, and you have X weapon on a stick, you generally win because you hit them before they hit you), but the spear is king, literally.

Qiang (simplified Chinese: 枪; traditional Chinese: 槍; pinyin: qiāng) is the Chinese term for spear. Due to its relative ease of manufacture, the spear in many variations was ubiquitous on the pre-modern Chinese battlefield. It is known as one of the four major weapons, along with the Gun (staff), Dao (sabre), and the Jian (sword), called in this group "The King of Weapons".

Their SDF is extremely formidable for what it is, especially in the region. Its also safe to argue that they have the best Navy in the region.

That and they have America as a guranteed backup, and by extention the other allied nations (UK, France, Canada, Ausfailia).

No country in the Pacific could afford to start a war with Japan.
>>
>>136223135
i rather say that is useful at best, i rather have a bayonet than extra ammo but a bayonet charge will only work if any of this thing happens:
- the enemy is low on ammo so they cant own you from far away
- there is a thick smoke screen so you can get close enough to own them
-the enemy just got hit by mortars, HE or an air strike so they are still shaking of the whole thing out of them.

them you can try to charge the enemy if you are better in hand to hand combat or your people is just physically stronger than the enemy (Americans vs the Vietcong)

They are not exactly wrong.

While Not-Rome basically can do whatever they want to do as the hegemonic power in the region Japan is hamstrung by its own public image as a "pacifist" nation (the quotation marks are there for a reason) and economic interests other powers have in what lies beyond the gate.

The only way Japan wins this scenario is by having the Empire voluntarily and diplomatically join into their fold as opposed to just go in guns blazing and "annexing" it as their territory which is a suicidal move given how China, Russia and the US would react.

Pina is aware that there are other countries beyond the gate but she has no real sense of the power balance going on outside and even if she knew she might consider that making a deal with Japan that guarantees her Kngdom's independence is favourable to having other powers get interested in the world beyond the gate.

They could force themselves in though.
They have basically allowed Japan to operate like that because Japan is also the one that takes the risk by going inside but if they were to just massacre Not-Rome and occupy it you'd see calls from the UN Security Council for other powers to send in a police force to stop the genocide done by the Japanese (which would be considered disproportionate retaliation).

I never said that it was a weakness that Not-Rome can exploit, just that there assessment is correct, even if they might be wrong/not know about why said assessment is correct and how to take advantadge of it.

You are quite right that having an actual Superpower as their foe would have resulted in a much more grim scenario for them (Russia, China and the US would not have tolerated the senseless killing of their citizens to go unpunished without poper retribution to the goverment responsible for that massacre).

Depends on how much and how viable it is to actually have it make its way to the world market but given that you want the scenario where Japan gets in trouble, let's assume they suddenly have twice Saudi Arabia's reserves.

My guess is that (unless Japan really fucks up) the US might actually reach a deal with Japan (being technically allies) to give them the same deal the Saudis get, which is basically as long as American companies can extract the oil and commercially profit from it they'll make sure no other superpower will even dare to touch Japan but conversely Japan may have to bite the bullet and allow more "allied US troops" (alternatively "diplomats" that are actually CIA operatives) in Japan proper again.
You know, just in case a new goverment has the bright idea to put such a deal in jeopardy.

If they don't do that, all three Superpowers would try to find some technically/dirt to pressure Japan into allowing them through the gate (or just flatout force it under UN control through some resolution to grab it away) or study ways to create a gate of their own in the meantime.

1815, when the "War of 1812" ended.

British America (nowadays canada) came down from the North and burned down the White House. By the time the US started t omake some gains/win some battles a Peace Treaty had been signed already with a White Peace (no gains for any side) because Britain could not make any decisive victory and preferred to cut their losses.

Though if you want to get pedantic, the Civil War did more harm to the US than any other war before and it was (at the time) fighting a "hostile power" (even if from the US' point of view it was just fighting rebel scum).

That was 150 years ago, compared to Japan's and Germany's 70+ (and even then Germany had to be prepared to fight in WWIII directly due to being the border between both superpower alliances and actually being on both sides of the border).

I don't think I agree with that analysis. ‘Japan’ from Gate didn't have many of the options that ‘Rome’ had. Sending in negotiators? Where to? They knew next to nothing about what was beyond the gate and the possibility of the negotiator just getting killed was very rare. As for the sign, notice that it contains not-Roman text, which they can only have known about from a captured soldier; it's safe to say that ‘Japan’ was assuming the opponent was literate. It also didn't commence the hostilities and when the fight is going on you cannot very well stop shooting, because if you do the enemy just keeps running at you. At no point did not-Rome try to negotiate either. Later when de option of negotiation becomes available, ‘Japan’ does use it.
Then there's the issue that actual Rome was not beyond surprise-sacking cities, slave trade, sending burning pigs into cities, genocide (multiple instances) and all kinds of other horrors.

And the authorities are doing jackshit to not appear "racists" depite actual crimes being commited by them?

I always thought people talking about "political correctness gone too far" were overreacting but it seems that our country has definitely gone insane in that regard.

I bought "Er ist wieder da" a few years ago and found it mildly funny but truly this kind of situation right now is going to end up with a massive reaction in the other direction if the authorities continue to systemically ignore the very real problems of their people.

Is their even a politically viable alternative that isn't voting right-wing that will deal with this fucked up situation or is Germany really between a rock and a hard place?

I didn't make the picture nor do I necessarily completely agree with it but I agree with the fact that the anime does a piss-poor job compared to the LN and the manga in illustrating the finer points of how Japan deals with the situation in a way that looks actually logically sound and not just flatout baiting the enemy into a trap for retaliatory purposes (this was shown even more in episode 14 if you compare it to the manga counterpart).

And Rome existed for over a millenia (two if you include byzantium) depending on the timephrame you can find different examples to fit your portrayal (Caesar was certainly not above going into genocide territory to get rid of the "Gaulic menace") but by the time of the imperial period of Gladiator they had it down to a science just for the sake of cost-effectiveness and their reputation preceding them (allowing them to just get what they wanted via negotiations most of the time).

Why kill her? Even if for some she doesn't join the US after seeing their long, black rifles and excellent gear (not a small tiny squad like in the show) and massive army size you can always just restrain her and use her as test subject to study her immortality (and later to test new biological and chemical weapons given that she'll always recover from them).

Sanctions.

Look how quickly sanctions destroy countries in today's economic climate. Now imagine Japan, which lacks resources, facing a blockade and sanctions. Japan isn't afraid of being conquered, they're afraid the food, fuel, and raw materials and processed goods will stop flowing.

Even if they started building up the infrastructure needed in the new world to start extracting resources there, it'd take years if not decades (refineries aren't cheap or easy to build) and in the mean time their civilian population would have to make due without. Not politically viable.

And how exactly would Japan have put their non-existent reputation to use to get what they want? If anything, the soldiers of not-Rome were probably thinking their reputation preceded them and that they could just kick Japan's butt.
I'm not saying Japan couldn't have handled it better, but to say that ‘baiting the enemy into a trap for retaliatory purposes’ is too much.

She can't achieve her own goals, and mostly she can't be bothered to even have a goal of her own. She's a happy-go-lucky bohemian slut. Nothing against sluts, of course. But she's not even competent at being a slut.

All art is copied. Great art is well-executed, and maybe has one original thing to it, but usually not even that.

Shakespeare wasn't writing original stories, he just wrote the best versions of a lot of older stories, some of which were ... gasp ... not from the local national cultural tradition.

So? It's a bit of nationalist fantasy on the part of the author (not to mention normal creator provincialism). I can understand that temptation, so really the only issue is that it's Japan specifically, since they were big into manifest destiny 70 years ago (after all the cool kids moved on from it), and thus anything nationalist from there seems more disgusting than from other countries to many people (myself included to be honest).

If I can tolerate Americawank, I can tolerate Japanwank. They're both about as obnoxious.

Yeah, of everything in the show, this was the most immersion breaking and ridiculous moment. The gate being in Japan is just premise, the SDF's success isn't that farfetched since they are well trained and equipped, and it follows that other countries would attempt to poach the VIPs.

But the sun will fall and drown the earth before anyone in the US military, much less someone in an elite branch of it, would declare anyone better than them (and they'd probably be right to). If it were just random CIA goons then fine, but this is too much of a stretch.

The home team had prepared terrain, and didn't even know they were fighting 3 different teams until late in the game.

The 3 teams assaulting the location were fighting each other as well as the home team, and the 3 teams were primarily equipped for deniability -- they were using weapons that could be bought in-country, not actually good gear.

But I mean I understand, it's your home team and nobody ever gives them any credit so you want to tell people how great they really are. People would probably laugh if a Canadian show had them shitting on US special forces even though that seems totally fine to me. The dialogue is just obligatory anime writing and as bad as it seems having the Japanese say how fucking great they are wouldn't work at all.

That's a lot of what Gate is, if it was pure nationalist wanking they would just go in and steamroll everything while chopping the emperor's head off with a katana after the Tokyo police cockblocked the barbarians, but it's actually promoting the JSDF to the Japanese themselves..

We have all the posts in these threads mentioning how the JSDF is actually a very modern, well equipped first world military. But you know the thing? A lot of Japanese still don't believe in having -any- military. As a country they're pretty much stuck between right wing crazies and American puppets that want a full military and people who think any military buildup whatsoever is asking to get nuked again. They get absolutely no respect as is within their own country let alone the rest of the world (it doesn't help that their role in fiction is generally to get curbstomped)

So much of what Gate tries to do is present the JSDF as 1) competent and useful, and 2) an asset and an ally to average peaceful people. So you get a mixture of scenes going "hey we can fight good like murikans" and going out of their way to help and befriend the locals. You get the parliament hearing where the kneejerk critics are made to look like retards.

Both of those will be highly expensive to the average person in the special zone and both have need for infrastructure well beyond what the zone has. This means it will not be able to support Japan in trade in case of sanctions.

Plus as you can see from the data, both China and the US are major importers ans exporters with Japan. the loss of relations with both would be staggering.

have you seen the special zone there are plenty of wizards for them to use
>>

The world of the Special Region is not full of nobles and rich people to the point that level of society can carry trade worth of teh United States and China alone. I do not recall the exchange rate of the local currency and the Yen.. but I doubt they could buy alot.

There is alot more to construction that just build it. Planning, testing soil, weather patterns, etc to see what types of materials are needed, the structures required. Just getting supplies in will be a pain.

A wizard did it its one of the lamest examples could you at east elaborate your response
A mage is going to pop up gas stations out of nowhere or coral plants, what about the power grid?
>>

*Coral
I meant coal

>>136234937
if im not mistaken, the annual budget of Japan is greater than the GDP of the Special Region.

Which means depending on what Japan is willing to sacrifice, pissing off its two biggest trade partners is extremely dumb.
>>
>>136235153
well its true you know magic could literally be used to solve any problems in this situation
>>
>>136235154
>Which means depending on what Japan is willing to sacrifice, pissing off its two biggest trade partners is extremely dumb.
It works both ways. It is also beneficial to give Japan some benefits in order to keep rivals out.
>>
>>136235154
but we are talking about potential for profit, not actualized GDP, i´d say a decade investing in the infrastructure of the Special Region could provide the means for Japan to become the biggest economy of the world, although it would take some decades to become reality.

Ah, I was discussing this is the terms of the Major powers going fuck this and Sanctioning the hell out of Japan if they failed to provide free and easy access to the Special zone.

>By plenty you mean the two we have seen on the whole anime
most elves seem to have it also lets not forget about the magical god that gave rory immortality

>>magic will make a working oil refinery just like that
ok m9
why wouldn't it the very existence of magic would let you get away with so much bullshit
>>
>>136234910
>plenty of wizards
actually, we've only seen three in the anime/manga so far. Rere, her teacher, and some old dude at the senate. Two of those are combat mages. And we haven't seen any other form of magic yet.
>>
>>136235306
But most of the technology for that is imported and that on the long run can damage China and the US
>>
>>136235306

I'd also add that 10 years isn't very long when bringing a Middle Ages region to the point that the major companies in Japan would be making money hand over fist.
>>
>>136235415
Unless you want to count Tuka and the Siren. I think that's spirit magic or something.

Cute little series though.

I think we are seeing this on the wrong pespective guys.

You see: we know the physical rules work somewhat differently on the SR, because it has magic and immortality and this kind of shit, why for example, are we assuming the laws that permit the appearance of fossil fuels, for example, even exist on the SR.

Moreover, it is my theory that this fact makes the SR an entire different universe from our own, who the fuck knows how different nature is from what we know? knowing this, can we really be sure there will be profit for whoever exploit the SR?

>>136235526
It's useless baiting people especially at the end of a thread.
>>
>>136235426

It would also encourage the US and China and any other major powers to seek other markets and encourage more businesses to strive to replace what the Japanese was providing.
>>
>>136235377
>Ah, I was discussing this is the terms of the Major powers going fuck this and Sanctioning the hell out of Japan if they failed to provide free and easy access to the Special zone.
And what made you think it is fair that Japan can't keep their sovereignty? No nation can give up their right to maintain their boarders without compensation.

1 million yen is a lot for the average joe who wants to fuck catgirls. But it is pocket change for any corporation or government who want to send in personnel. To even object to that is to not realise how cheap the entry price actually is, for what you are getting out of it.
>>
>>136235787

This was in relation to the hypothetical UN going "allow the deployment of peacekeepers for face problems" discussion.
>>
>>136235787
Oh, and for Americans out there... 1 million yen sounds like a lot in Yen, but it is under $9000 USD.
That is CHEAP for business and government expenses.
>>
>>136235787
>1 million yen is a lot for the average joe who wants to fuck catgirls

I dunno, anon. Real catgirls? I think you underestimate our resolve.
