I think it would be very difficult to do a serious Zelda cartoon/anime and not make Link a marysue character, which is what I think he is in the minds of most fans. Because he never speaks in any of the games and you're supposed to project into him, he's basically a blank-slate character, therefore he doesn't have much personality and so of course fans will build him up in their own imaginations as a marysue, which is fine.
But if you try to build up a story for a show, with emotions and drama, then you're going to have to develop him as a character and that's destined to conflict with what fans have had in their heads for years. The games have never really had any kind of compelling storytelling and instead focus on exploration and puzzles.
So there's one of two ways to do this: either do a great and original story with rich characters in unique fantasy scenarios (something more than just the typical good vs. evil BS we've all seen before) which is bound to not please the fans, OR keep it simple, which would result in Link just being a boring protag that's bound to end up being a marysue in a super generic fantasy setting with a shallow good vs. evil plot. It's a loose-loose scenario and I think the original creators / IP owners know this.
There's always somethign which bothered me in Zelda. Link and Zelda obviously have romantic feelings for each others, it's even more obvious in Skyward Sword. So, what happens to their reincarnations? Does it mean they never end together or something? Or Link and Zelda are respawned from different families randomly?
>>136217766 Link is a reincarnation of the Hero's Spirit that protects Zelda (who is a mortal incarnation of the goddess Hylia). The only Link and Zelda that (most likely) have canonically gotten together is Skyward Sword's. Possibly Link and Tetra from Wind Waker as well, but nothing that confirms it. In most instances Link and Zelda barely know each other, Twilight Princess in particular you barely interact at all, and Ocarina of Time when time is undone in the Child's Timeline at the end, Zelda and Link only know each other for a short while before he ventures off to find Navi (leading to Majora's Mask). Link and Zelda's that DID know each other include Minish Cap, where they are childhood friends. All Zeldas are related to every other Zelda, since Zelda is just the woman that is bearing the Triforce of Wisdom in the Hyrule Royal Family. The only Link that is related to any other Link (as far as we know) is Twilight Princess's Link, who is a descendant of Ocarina of Time's Link (Hyrule Historia confirms this), and of course Link's that are in multiple games (the Oracle games, OoT/MM, Zelda 1 and 2). So to answer your questions, whether they end up together depends on the game and circumstances. OoT Zeld and Link probably never got together, and Twilight Princess Zelda probably just gave Link a pity fuck after Midna broke his heart. SS Link and Zelda fucked like rabbits, while Tetra and Link had to populate a whole continent.
>>136213616 This >>136215456 would probably be the best. They said themselves that they pulled from high school romances for the story and interactions between the characters. Hell they go to school at the start of the game. Wind Waker could probably be adapted pretty well too, or a sequel to bridge the gap between Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks. Minish Cap could probably be done as well if we wanted to be fairly lighthearted with the anime.
>>136213616 The problem is that you would have to give Link a personality, and that would require the character making choices about things where the "right answer" isn't clear. None of the Zelda games have that, really, except for Majora's Mask where you don't have the time to save everybody in a single 3-day cycle, so in the final cycle you have to choose who to save. That might make for some interesting storytelling.
Another thing is that in most games Link operates alone most of the time, and unless the whole thing is strongly episodic and thematic (like Mushishi) or the lone character has a REALLY strong personality, then that doesn't work.
The only game where he has a partner with a considerable personality is Twilight Princess, and if they dared to give Link a strong enough personality to really bounce off Midna then that might be really good. Midna's perspective as an inhabitant of the Twilight World is ripe ground for some interesting ideological conflict—things she considers "right" might be things that Link as a Hyrulian considers "wrong" and perhaps vice versa.
>>136206774 Presuming that Link doesn't speak I see 2 possible options that might work.
1. Make a full length series with serious elements, make Link literally a mute within the timeline/canon of the anime, have him communicate nonverbally and have his navi/midna equivalent sidekick do any needed dialogue for story progression. It's important that they actually establish that this link is a mute if they are going for anything remotely serious, or his not speaking is just going to become sillier and sillier
2. Make a series of small 5 or so minute shorts. Have each short be mostly episodic with very little dialogue at all. This length of time should be small enough so that even if Link isn't actually mute they should be able to wiggle around his not talking.
Personally I think I'd prefer the first option as it would lend itself better to character development and the like.
>>136221226 Having a series focused on side characters reacting to the major events while link solves them in the background may simultaneously the best option and the one that will piss off the most people.
>>136222674 The problem with making Link mute is that he looks autistic and it becomes a thing, he's not actually mute in the games. This is why I think a Zelda anime shouldn't focus on Link, they've got the lore to focus on something else.
>>136222674 I don't think there's a need to make link mute, plenty of the manga have given him decent dialogue so it's not impossible. Oh and, we need to have Wakamoto as Ganondorf, this is non-negotiable.
I think It would be for the best that the anime isn't centered around Link, but in another possibly new anime-unique characters that reside in Hyrule while Link, the actual hero, is fighting against the Ganondorf forces.
Our characters could for example visit a dungeon after Link was done with it. Or see him shopping or riding in Hyrule time to time. Sometime they even manage to get close to him, but he just awkwardly shoves them off.
>>136224035 >Era of Chaos I want set there. I mean, end of SS, Zelda ain't no princess. There ain't a royal family. There is one in Minish Cap though. What did they do to get everyone say "Yeah, declaring them ruler and swearing fealty to them makes sense"? Albeit Minish Cap Zelda can leave and go to Link's house unattended, so it must have been a very peaceful time afterwards.
>>136224111 Yes. This is canon by Nintendo's degree, but they almost certainly made up most of it to get more Hyrule Historia's out the door.
Mild alternative: it might be interesting to do a story that springboards off a previous Zelda game.
Basically the day is won, Link's ready to finally relax when suddenly, shit happens, a new evil is on the rise, and Link's gotta pull himself out of his chair after just getting comfortable to fight for Hyrule again.
>>136224111 That's the actual page from Nintendo's book dude. 100% canon.
The three timelines branch from OOT. They're basically "what-if" scenarios. If Link from OOT is killed by Ganondorf, the Knights of Hyrule storm his castle and the seven sages seal him away, leading to LTTP. If he's successful, two different branches lead away from that because of what Zelda did at the end of OOT with the ocarina.
In the adult time, since Zelda sent Link back to the past, there's no one to stop Ganondorf when he escapes, so they pray to the gods and they flood Hyrule, leading to the Wind Waker timeline.
In the child timeline where Link was sent back, he sneaks back into the castle and warns Zelda about Ganondorf's plans, and the King has him executed, which you can see in Twilight Princess.
>>136224215 I'd take a teenage Link after Majora's Mask looking for Navi. If he's chasing down leads and shit it could give them freedom to have it set in a variety of locales. Or do it pre-WW, where Ganondorf won and forced Hyrule to be flooded. I just can't seem them making a game there, it just seem too dark for traditional Zelda to cover.
>>136215456 Honestly, this would work. Skyward Sword felt a lot like an anime because it focused so much more on making the plot hit home and fleshing out the characters than other ones did. Also, Ghirahim in an anime would be fucking apex tier. (Hail Anri Katsu.)
>>136224302 >I just can't seem them making a game there, it just seem too dark for traditional Zelda to cover. It would be fundamentally impossible to set a game at that point in time because the whole fucking reason Hyrule was flooded in the first place is because the Hero wasn't there in the first place.
Man, it took centuries for that particualar temporal fuck-up to be corrected.
The Goddesses must have shit bricks when they realized the soul of the destined Hero was effectively removed from the timeline.
>>136224413 Did you never actually play Link to the Past? They describe the Imprisoning War during the prologue. The Knights of Hyrule all get together and start a huge fucking war against Ganon, fight him down to the last man, and the seven wise men (aka Zelda and the Six Sages) use the opportunity to seal him in the Dark World. Those knights must have been some serious badasses though, seriously.
>>136224641 You're confused man. The Twilight Princess timeline happens when Link is victorious. He's sent back in time by Zelda at the end of OOT, and it shows him sneaking back into the castle to see her again in the epilogue. He then presumably informs her of Ganon's plans and the King decides to have Ganon executed before he can actually do anything. But because of Triforce being beyond the concepts of time and space he somehow still has it despite having not acquired it yet (figure that one out!), and they have to seal him in the Twilight Realm using the mirror.
>>136224696 You are also confused. He's talking about the Link to the Past branch. The Link to the Past timeline happens if Link dies at the end of OOT. The "no-chosen hero" timeline is the Adult Link era, Ganon escapes the Dark World and Link isn't there to stop him (because Zelda sent him back to the past), leading to the events of The Wind Waker.
>>136224954 >But because of Triforce being beyond the concepts of time and space he somehow still has it despite having not acquired it yet (figure that one out!), and they have to seal him in the Twilight Realm using the mirror.
All three had their pieces from the beginning, they just manifested at different times. Ganondorf snuck into the sacred realm and gained power when Link opened the gate and went into hibernation.
After Link's sent back to the past, he instead escapes with the Ocarina of Time and ends up in Termina, and Ganondorf never gains access to the sacred realm.
>>136224954 >He then presumably informs her of Ganon's plans and the King decides to have Ganon executed before he can actually do anything. Link doesn't need to do anything in the Child Timeline. Because Link is the only one who can open the Sacred Realm, all he needs to do is wait for Ganondorf to try and enter it himself and get fucked over by the Sages.
>>136225220 >I hear LttP and LA are both really good. They are fucking good, if you like the 2D top down Zeldas you'll love them. Make sure you get LA DX, the one with color, not the original black and white one. Shit, Link's Awakening! That one would be great as an adaptation, already a completely fantasy world in a fantasy world.
>>136225220 Yeah, LA is probably one of the best games actually. Also, the timeline between LTTP, LA, and the Oracle games is the most secure of the entire franchise, because it's the same Link in all 3 games. After saving Hyrule, the Triforce sends him to save the other two lands, and Link's Awakening occurs when he is sailing back to Hyrule afterward. And since the Triforce is complete in this timeline, it makes sense that the Royal Family would use it, which leads nicely into Zelda I and Zelda II.
>>136216407 > a boring protag that's bound to end up being a marysue in a super generic fantasy setting with a shallow good vs. evil plot. Sounds like The Force Awakens. Nevertheless, I thought Twilight fans loved those movies, mabie having a blank actor portraying Link could be a good idea.
Also, despite Link not talking, it's always implied that he's not mute and he gesticulates a lot. We know he's a good boy that blushes when Zelda gets to close.
>>136224112 This franchise has never gotten Zelda's prodigious genius right. I want a waifu monarch who's singlehandedly progressing her era's technology along by inventing ice arrows and stuff with their world's baloney resources. Bombs literally grow on trees here.
>>136225959 The beginning of the manga hinted that Link knew shit was about to go down and made a big stink about it, and some douche noble had him framed for something and thrown in prison. After Demise's armies killed that noble, they busted him out.
>>136227415 Honestly, I just don't see "Pixar Zelda" working as a movie. I don't even mind the animation or the character designs or whatever, but that demo is basically just "hey look we took the most cliche western animated action scene possible and slapped some zelda faces on the characters!"
Basically if they don't solve the problem of Link being a completely empty vessel then they're not solving anything worth solving.
Unable to confess, he is gifted by a deus ex machina with the girl's secret lullaby. Never minding the strange musical notes, he immediately plays for her, and is overjoyed to find out that she has a crush on him as well.
But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day's confessions to the girl, she only looks at him with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, he finds out that the girl he called is not the same girl he fell in love with. In fact, she doesn't exist in this universe at all. She is the girl's alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the MC's own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of her crush.
Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to defeat the growing evil of their respective kingdoms. While the two chase their respective loved ones, DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of an HERO.
>>136220193 All those would have bad CG models. >CG Spaceship in Star Fox >CG Racers >CG Samus during combat Only one that could potentially be CG-less would be Zelda. Even then the monsters would probably be CG every now and then.
