Is it just me or is Comedy/Ecchi anime always better in the dub? Examples - Lucky Star, Seto no Hanyome, DXD, HOTD, Ouran Highschool host club, Sora no Otoshimono, FLCL, and many more?
the timing of anime is based around the cadence of japanese language which is not very close to english language so english dubs usually have to mangle the script and use awkward phrasing in order to convey the scenes
really good translators can work around this and really good VAs can make it work
alas, really good translators and really good VAs don't bother with anime dubs
There were some shows I was watching on my new computer that were defaulting to the English subtitle track, I literally wanted to puke. Dubs are for fucking retards and they sound horrible.
Do you want a gold star? It must be humiliating to be so frail as to become sick over a silly thing like a dub. Stop being a weeb nerd and just enjoy the shows you watch in the language you enjoy the most.
Japanese acting (VA or live action) fucking sucks.
If western actors actually cared about what they're doing they'd easilly make anime sound better in english than it does in japanese.
But they don't care (since it's a shame to be a voice in weeabo shit the idiots say) so we're stuck with poor acting on both ends.
Bebop seems to have done a amazing job even by Subfag standerds. I don't get why some people try to hide the fact they watch dubbed anime. It's not really a big deal.
Maybe for 90's anime like trigun or bebop
With that said mcfuckin kill yourself op.
HIRO WE NEED VISIBLE SAGE AGAIN
>It's my first week here on /a/
Having shit taste and shitposting is bannable sir
Well that's all opinion isn't it annon? You not contributing to the thread on any way is actually shit posting. At least the other guys try to make a serious argument against dubs although the argument is mostly "dubs suck".
Feels pretty good considering I'd be the carnivore. Everyone seems to be to afraid to stand up for the dub. And the arguments I'm hearing in favor of subs leave me unimpressed at best.
Jap acting is frequently a night-and-day improvement over what Murrikans do anyway, so cry us a river or two.
Rare exceptions mean nothing other than that better work is possible, not that we need exceptions to establish that at all.
Then being a Hispanic, I feel comfortable with Japanese language sounds being a lot like French/Spanish/etc.
>factual opinions doesn't exist
ok let me give you reasons why dubs are horrid
>puns doesn't translate well
>voice actress doesn't sound cute
>Some lines are removed to fit in lip sync
>honoriffics are ignored
So much information are lost dipshit. I bet you stream your shows too. Goodjob on putting on your trip so people can have an easier time to filter you.
Why would you watch both the sub and the dub for that many shows to even know that one is better?
>puns doesn't translate well
>Some lines are removed to fit in lip sync
Thess are the only ones that aren't pet peeves.
Not that I would ever try to defend Murrikan voice acting.
Well done because you didn't address the problem big problem here. I don't think you knew about this but you aren't Japanese so you wouldn't get the jokes if they weren't subbed in English in the first place. The jokes in comedy anime are far more entertaining in English as they are told in a way that an English speaking audience can understand the humor. When you watch a comedy anime subbed weather you realize it or not you are mostly laughing at the animation and just understanding what's happening with the English text at the bottom of the screen. There are tons of good dubs your weebo brain holding you back from sir.
>doesn't even speak Japanese
>thinks he can somehow understand it
Oh you're one of those delusional weebs who "taught" himself Japanese by watching anime and think you're hot shit because you can pick out maybe 5% of the words in a conversation
I've tried a lot of comedy dubs and they were all ass.
As for non comedy dubs there are obvious exceptions but most of them are really bad or mediocre mostly because of the shitty VAs and overly localized or just pplain bad scripts. The only reason to watch dubs is if you really don't like watching things in other languages for whatever autistic reason.
Did Seto no Hanayome really have a dub?
Also: it felt awful to download a high quality torrent of the series only for the translation to be ass and the opening to episode... 16 or 17 to be the new version instead of the original
Well we can agree to disagree. I like dubs and subs as well believe it or not. I'm just tired of weebs thinking they are special or something for only watching subs when from what I've heard half of them sound just as corny and unnatural as bad dubs. If you don't believe me go over to /int/ find a Japanese and ask them yourself.
you know if you have watched japanese shows for 20 years(drama,TV shows, movies ,including infomercials) ,finished 50+ untranslated VN , You need to be brain dead not to be able to pick up atleast 80% of what the people are saying. Maybe you're a retard , sorry if I offended you but it's ok , OP is retarded too because it's common so you don't need to be shy.
After 400 anime completed, I've still haven't found a dub good enough to replace the sub.
The audio is complete garbage compared to the show itself, the heavy localization makes the show cringeworthy, and its always done by washed up, third rate actors who couldn't get a real job.
Honedtly I'd rather listen to bad VA in the original language than bad VA in my language where it's not only easier for me to tell it's bad but also has an altered script exasperating the issue further
That's funny considering its actually proven to be impossible to learn any language from watching tv. I know this because I actually pay attention in school. So either you are learning Japanese from a different source or you're just talking smack.
You're pathetic. Any actual Japanese speaker laughs at your pretentious ass. It doesn't matter how much weeb shit you've consumed, it's not like you can't sit through any of it with no understanding of Japanese whatsoever. Unlike you, I'm actually bilingual with English as my second language and let me tell you, the only thing that matters is whether or not you can speak the language and you obviously can't. If you could you wouldn't be here trying to talk big like a fucking faggot.
I prefer the original Japanese voices over English dub.
A big reason for this is that I think Japanese sounds a lot better than English.
I will say that there are a few decent English dubs out there though.
Ghost stories is one of them simply because of how ridiculous it is. I got a few good laughs out of it.
Its because the sense of humor in a sub is localized and has major japanese influences derived from pop culture and history. Americans who watch this content dont understand this sense of humor so it has to be localized again for the english dub so you fat pieces of neckbeard shit can have something culturally relevant to laugh at it while watching it, faggot
Can you give me proof of anybody learning a language watching tv? If so can you send the proof to every university in the world because I'm sure they would take interest in it as well.
I speak english ,french, my native langauge and can understand not 100% of japanese.
> Any actual Japanese speaker laughs at your pretentious ass
Too bad you can't laugh at me because you're not a japanese, faggot.
I was never bragging about being able to 100% understand japanese , I said I can pick up most of what they are saying.
Plenty of people have learned some language by watching TV. You're the one claiming it's been proven to be impossible, learning a language is also not implying you're completely fluent by the way
I cringed reading this. I would be willing to bet that 99% of non Japanese watchers know next to nothing about Japanese history non related to ww2 or samurai week shit. It's probably because nobody cares.
>20 years of watching anime and reading VN's and I can understand almost 80% of Japanese
Fucking kek. The funny thing is if you've spent a couple of those years actually studying the language instead of wasting your time on stupid shit you would already be speaking Japanese no problem.
You're still at it are you? I do not need to learn for I have no use of it. Maybe when I have some spare time. Why the fuck are you so adamant about your "proven study"? Why are you even arguing with me? I just said I am capable of picking up most of a japanese conversation. Is that even a fucking argument?
I wouldn't there is literally very few non Japanese that need to learn the language and frankly it's a waste of time. If the only motivation you have to learn Japanese is anime I wouldn't bother.
>I would be willing to bet that 99% of non Japanese watchers know next to nothing about Japanese history non related to ww2 or samurai week shit. It's probably because nobody cares.
>As long as you know your homelands language and English you are pretty set in life.
Typical ignorant, self-centered murricunt, wouldnt expect anything less
Anywayt im not amused by your samefagging shitshow anymore, have a good day.
Already leaving? Anyways it was polite of you to wish me good day. I'd do the same but I save that for worthy opponents. So to you sir I say goodbye.
This is true but also there are plenty of dubs that pull it off reasonably well.
Rarely if ever for fucking comedy series though, unless they're heavily rewritten a la Shin-Chan or Panty & Stocking.
>Watching shitty b-team dubs of c-team harem shows and flavor of the week battle shonens
Flcl's dub was fire tho, laharl a best
What gets me about people who like subbed anime is that you aren't understanding them,
You're just listening to the melody of their voices, so you can't determine any flaws or mistakes the damn actor makes. It's the same as listening to a song in a different language.
People who prefer subbed over dubbed, (and this is my opinion) are just weeaboos who need to have everything in Japanese to make themselves feel like they "know" or "connect" more with the work.
There's no way in hell anyone who isn't japanese and or does not know japanese can even back up their claim of why subbed is better. You can't even understand them and I bet my ass people will say "Well, you can, I know by the pitches and changes in tone". Doesn't matter, if you can't comprehend what they're saying, then you're just listening to a fucking melody of voice and reading a damn screen.
That is why Dubbed is better and can't be compared to Subbed, when the debate is with someone who thinks subbed is better and doesn't know an Inch of Japanese.
