IMO they haven't really been that bad for a while, but once you get a certain reputation as a studio it's hard to lose it. Kyoani shows have been pretty crap for a while but people still treat them like they're the most amazing thing ever because of that Cinderella run they had with the string of hits almost a decade ago now. Deen had a really bad run in the mid 2000's and didn't do such a great adaptation of Fate so now they are forever Satan and there's no way out of the hole. Sunrise had a couple of lackluster second seasons when a lot of the current generation started watching anime and a kind of crappy 2009-2010 even though pretty much everybody did and now they're forever in the shit too. Shaft hasn't had a particularly great show since Madoka Magica but because of that one run with Bake and that in the span of a couple years they can forever do no wrong. It's fucked and I'm sure there are other examples but yeah get it really right or really wrong in a high profile situation 5 years ago and you're forever fucked or infallible in the eyes of today's stock of anime fans and there's just nothing you can do about it ever.
