Judai had a plethora of new Spells in Season 4, but 5D's started good. I think the level of writing dropped in the middle of 5D's. Duels were pretty simplistic in Zexal and haven't picked up in Arc-V. I've been rewatching GX, and the first two seasons have more frequent usage of older cards and more technical plays.

I'd need to rewatch a lot of duels, but I feel like most duels are simply the writers thinking of how to set up the field of each duelist without thinking of how they would interact with each other. Then random new cards are made for interaction because they're too lazy to look at existing cards.
