Yeah. The anime stays fairly true to the VN, except for the Moeka arc. If you like one you will likely like the other.
There is a lot more explaining about the science in the VN, and in general just feels a bit slower and more fleshed out, as to be expected.
The biggest difference in my opinion is that you constantly get to read what Okabe thinks, which adds a lot to some scenes and even make some of them feel totally different. The phone messaging system also helped show some softer sides of nearly all the characters, especially Kurisu.

That's not what "canonical" means. Canon is just a means of determining what is official and what isn't official. Everything in the VN is canon, it's just that "this is what happens if Okabe does this" and "this is what happens if Okabe does that".
Other games in the sciADV series will presume that one path is taken, certainly. And so it will be canon, only from their perspectives. But it can't be said that the other possibilities "never happened"; only "never happened according to Robotics;Notes" and etc.
