I mean fuck, anime characters like Misato are a dime a dozen, they pace along, do some action stuff, takes care of a kid once in a awhile (since she's an adult), but provides absolutely zero challenge to the viewer in any intellectual respect whatsoever.

Because the unfortunate truth is, as far as Misato goes, the only thing you'll find out by delving deeper into her character are the numerous inconsistencies and pointlessness of whatever it thought and wanted.

But hey, at least she's sexy, cool, slutty and vulnerable, right? Surely those original traits will get her popular and have her character praised. Because no anime has ever done sexy, cool, slutty or vulnerable in a genre designed to get boychildren and manchildren rock hard.

Not that Anno couldn't make a better character out of Misato, because he could, but he's rich now and doesn't give a fuck except for characters he personally likes, so tough luck.

This is one of the parts I kind of like about Eva, is how the characters understand and react to complex situations. Her motivation worked, not because Shinji thought that Misato loved him and wanted to bang, but because her understood that
A. She did legititmately care about him.
and
B. She would do pretty much anything to get him to pilot Eva.

He realizes all of this in the elevator, which is why he starts crying (that and the fact that he knows Misato is dying/dead and decides to pilot 01, only to find it trapped in bakelite.

This is literally all wrong. Asuka's "love" for Kaji is a form of self-preservation, the security of wanting something you know you can never have prevents you from getting hurt emotionally. She wasn't in love with Kaji, she was in love with being in love with Kaji (I actually think this was covered in the show at some point)

Also, Shinji isn't a self-insert character, he is intended to be relatable, but that doesn't automatically make him a self-insert. Asuka is cool and is best character

She's got the best character development by far imo. Her best episode is when she goes on the date that Hikari set up for her and ditches the dude. It's obvious that he only wants to go out with her because she's a foreign beauty and he wants some of her ass. It's nice to have your attractiveness validated every once in a while but for Asuka I'm sure it seems like that's the only reason people try to get close to her

She goes home surprised to find Shinji doing something he wasn't told to do for once and genuinely praises him, almost like a mother would. This is the NICEST she's ever been to him. This shit goes right over Shinji's head but whatever, she knows he's dense and has esteem issues. Now comes round 2, she wants to kiss him and make that fucker realize what's up. He completely drops the ball again and she's left out in the cold. She cannot get him to reciprocate. She was kind to him, praised him, and made romantic advances and none of it worked. She's got no chance in hell at this point

Now along comes Kaji and she's got another chance to feel like ANYbody appreciates her. But nope, Kaji's dick is stuck inside Misato and it's not coming out. He could basically be a father figure for her at this point. We don't know how long they've known each other but I'm assuming they've been together since she was barely starting elementary school. But now he barely acknowledges that she's there

Its definitely one of the most complex, and ambiguous. I feel like with time Misato could have become a guardian figure to Shinji that really helped him in his adolescence, less a mother and more of a big sister. He helps her out too-just compare Misato's apartment in episode 2 with how it appears in later episodes.

I love that about her character, because she doesn't even consider that taking in a troubled 15 year old she just met is probably going to be difficult, she just wants that sense of family. Not even for Shinji to be dependent on her, but for them to be on equal footing as a family. The problem is she doesn't know how to do it, most people wouldn't and their relationship is strange, although most people take it lightly.

Re-watching it, I got so mad when Ritsuko went "Oh, guess your little perfect family plan didn't work out for you". Stupid cat-lady.
