I feel any addition to a perfect story is ruining it. That is or rather was the beauty of Steins;Gate, it didn't need anything else everything worked perfectly. Even that extra episode the anime did was bullshit and unnecessary.
It's so obvious they're only doing this to just milk more money from a loyal fanbase.
A better way for me to explain would be comparing everything they did with Steins;Gate after the game to the Star Wars prequels. Sure it doesn't make the original movies worse in any way but it introduces unnecessary elements to the story and messes up with a perfect universe all for the sake of making more money

At least Zero is expanding on an interesting element from the VN that had room for it. A lazy one would be taking place after then ending where Okabe finds himself having to jump around to protect Kurisu and Mayuri again.

So I'm "playing" the VN but I've never watched the show. Am I doing it wrong? I mean it's a little late to correct it but is the show worth watching after? I dont even know the relationship between the two.

VN is the best place to start though you might want a guide to get you to the true (i.e. canon and only good) ending. The show is worth watching after. The VN's translation was actually the work of an anon that still posts here, which you will probably notice sooner rather than later.

Let me put it this way: Steins;Gate is considered reddit as hell because when the anime aired, the fansub, official sub and dub all ripped out the original 2channel memes and replaced them with circa 2010 reddit ones. WhyNot subs and the VN's translation (which had at least one case of crossover) left in the original memes with minor edits to use 4chan equivalent terms where appropriate.

Admittedly, this has its drawbacks for the anime as you don't have a super convenient glossary. I had already played the VN so I knew them all already but I could see it being a bit off putting.

The Steins Gate worldline is a worldline that essentially misses the convergence points of Alpha and Beta. It's going to eventually converge at some point, but it essentially misses the big points that put it on the tangible Alpha and beta.
