Bad memory is definitely a bad plot device, but it's only played a part in Sodachi Lost and the first episode of Koyomimonogatari so far.

This particular instance of bad memory is just supposed to be funny, and it's to make the point that, depending on what context you view something in, your perspective on it changes. His forgetting is just to reinforce that point - Nisio could have easily not made it Araragi's shed.

As far as Sodachi goes, the anime forgot to mention that his parents took protective custody of quite a few other kids. Araragi's other memories of her were actively repressed. He knew about Sodachi all along and just didn't admit it until Ougi forced him to.

The rock shed nonsense is just dumb. No ones memory is that god awful. Especially since, as far as I can tell, Araragi having a bad memory was never a consistent character trait of his. Though maybe I'm just misremembering.

If Araragi mentioned the same thing to Hanekawa and she figured it out, it would make sense. She likely memorized all of the curriculums and schedules, because that's the kind of insane thing she would do. And it would be easy for her to connect the dots.
But how would Oshino know any of that?
