I think most of the dislike of Unicorn comes from it being the worst example of deliberate Newtype magic in any animated UC series (I personally think the later Crossbone manga is way worse).

Axis being pushed back at the end of CCA due to the miracle of Newtypes and humanity's will pushing it back was acceptable to me. Not to mention that both Amuro and Char died as a result of that. Was it still kind of ridiculous? Yeah, but Amuro didn't intentionally do anything except try to push it back with the Gundam.

Compared to Banagher, who pilots a Gundam that pretty much weaponizes the miracle that happened. He literally creates a giant Newtype shield out of his own will that blocks a colony laser, becomes a "perfect Newtype" that is able to disable an army of suits at once, and then even comes back alive. And this isn't even mentioning that time travel bullshit.

I didn't like how the battles invariably ended when a named character's suit got its arm/leg blown off then they'd run away. The obligatory battle every episode got super tiring over the stretch of the show. The whole mecha aspect felt like it took a back seat to melodrama. They were in space too much also.

The MOTW format was better. At least it had some variety and consequences. And it felt like they were taking war more seriously when they had to resupply and take care of civilians and get salt and follow military orders and whatever, instead of being unable to control their children pilots who take off with a suit every time they throw a temper tantrum.
