Because it could have been much more than it is.

It could have been something special, but then Eren turned Titan, then half the cast turned Titan, then the Walls were Titan, then the poor girl was Princess, then Eren could control Titan. Last I read the Titans had taken a backseat to some generic "the gub'ment is the true evil" plot. That was when I dropped it.

If it had just been barely capable humans trying to survive against giant zombies, I think i'd have liked it a lot more. Instead it kept introducing twist after twist and I just gave up on it.

I guess I hate it more for what it isn't, rather than what it actually is. I don't get upset when people say they like it, I'll just never get over its wasted potential.

I honestly don't think its that bad, definitely overrated though. Characterization is very bad, exremely angsty without development, story jumps the gun after the Battle for Trost.

The art style is definitely unique, the acting is great (even the dubs), the story simple (until after Trost), but it still lacks in all the other departments making it average. I think the reason its really mainstream is because its a post-apocolyptic survival show so people bored of Walking Dead transferred over to this show. Because it's a series that thinks it's a lot smarter than it actually is. It tries to push to whole mystery angle, but it's mysteries are quite predictable and it tries to be clever in it's commentary/presentation, but does not bring anything novel to the table.

This is a series that also tries to have it's cake and eat it too. It tries to portray a very dire world, but at the same time it blatantly protects a sizable amount of the cast for various plot reasons. For a world where things are presented as going wrong all the time, how much of it actually goes wrong for the good guys?

World/character building is fine and all, but it's almost excessive and as a result, you have a main and supporting cast that is defined, but are all extremely shallow so it is extremely hard to invest in anyone. Stupid amounts of time are invested in supporting characters only for them to be knocked down.

And things are emotionally exaggerated to the point of silliness, all while being played totally straight.

This is a world that takes itself so seriously that I cannot take it seriously.

You have to realize that the basement was always intended to be AOT's endgame, that's where all the answers are so it's not surprising that we didn't get there immediately. Having all mysteries solved 30% in the story, now THAT would be poor storytelling.

Eren's Titan form showed up to save Mikasa in chapter 7, and Eren was revealed to be inside the Titan in chapter 9.
I don't think asspulls apply when it happens so early in the story and the entire plot and world is based around that twist.
Asspulls are the author making stuff up to remedy writing themselves into a corner. Isayama did not write himself into a corner in any way, he deliberately had Eren get eaten so as to introduce him as a Titan Shifter, and therefore the entire concept of Shifters which has been the centerpiece for every arc thereafter, and indeed the entire story to revolve around.
Asspulls are something like in Naruto, where Kishimoto wrote Madara to just have way too many abilities and be way too strong with the intention of making him super powerful and a good final boss, but with absolutely no idea as to how the main characters would defeat him. Which resulted in the Kaguya asspull, who, despite being stronger than Madara, it could at least be written in that it's the MCs destinies to defeat her so they get the bullshit yin/yang on their hands to seal her specifically.
The key point about asspulls is that they pretty clearly weren't planned for ahead of time by the author.
