The series is a slow burner but for me it is a genuine case of something that gets so much better in the second half.

The 2nd half sees all the tension and suspense that the show has been slowly building up explode forth in such a dramatic way. After that there are no brakes on the Shiki train.

It really stretches your suspension of disbelief once you get to the final third.

The show doesn't transition very smoothly from 'VAMPIRES FUCK YEAH!" to "HUMANS FUCK YEAH!" It all just happens within a single episode. The vampires go from this massive world ending threat to complete bitches because of some lame 'humans are the true monsters' message it wants to pass on.

I stopped getting invested around the time where the humans go single file into the cramped sewer system with nothing but a few sticks and manage to brutally and systematically slaughter the much stronger, faster and more durable vampires (who also outnumber them) because the vampires decide to cower in fear and run for their lives.

Like, I get that the series wanted to make the humans into the monsters (especially given the climactic showdown between Suit Loli and OtterMode) but it could have found a clever way to get to that plot point, instead of throwing everything it built up out of the window.

I thought that transition was entirely natural and intended, considering how the series had built the tension and the suspense over the course of the episodes.

When it finally spilled over, it was unstoppable.

When I watched it, I interpreted a lot of what you're complaining about as the show emphasizing the importance of group mentality. Initially, the humans (aside from doc and the kid) were operating like they were prey, playing the traditional role of humans in a vampire story. However, when the doctor demonstrated that the monsters were flesh and blood and very, very killable, the humans got their shit together and got to purging. At the same time, of course, the vampires' mentality was totally shattered by the realization that their dominance was the product of the humans' apathy, not their own cleverness or power (aside from the super-shiki, of course). I thought that the tunnel scene where, as you said, the vampires decided to cower in fear and run for their lives, was a demonstration of how powerful mob mentality can be on both sides of the struggle, with group bloodlust on one side and group panic on the other.

I really like how the 'Vampires' are portrayed in Shiki. In most Vampire stories when a human turns into one the become a dark version of themselves but in Shiki they are mostly all the same people. Which is reinforced in this section when they are all running away from the 'monsters'.

Her frustrations were similar to any teenage girl stuck in the middle of nowhere. Before she got the chance to grow out of that phase, she was Shiki'd which caused them to be multiplied tenfold. She was also encouraged by the Shiki to blame the village

The Shiki killed her then mindfucked her enough by playing on her negatives to make her think that what she was doing was somewhat justified.

She was naive and stupid but she was definately sympathetic and pitiable. Her death was justifed if only to put her out of her misery.

Tatsumi and Tsunako essentially mindfuck them. First they demonstrate to them that there is no way back to being human and if you want an easy life you'll go along with what they tell you to do.

Then they convince them that what they are doing is entirely justifiable i.e. Its not their fault they are doing what they are doing. Its the fault of the people of the village.

In many cases, Tatsumi/Tsunako prey on their old relationship links. Like with Nao they encourage them to go after their old family member so that they can "join them in an immortal utopia". Though as we saw with Nao, there is a greater chance that their family members simply permenantly die from the attacks rather than raise up as Shiki

That's also a good point. With the exception of Tatsumi and Tsunako, the Shiki were basically a conscript army. When shit went down, their lack of discipline or training of any sort became very evident.

He was fighting an enemy that worked through subterfuge and mystery. The odds were stacked against him. For the survival of not just himself but of every person in the village he had to make the difficult decision as he was the only one who could.

He was a hero in that sense. He didnt take any personal gratification from killing the Shiki.

He enjoyed the moment the Shiki lost their arrogant sense of superiority and but he is never once shown enjoying killing the Shiki.

The extra episode with the Shiki in the tunnel demonstrates a group of humans who have begun to take joy from killing the Shiki and even torturing them by stringing them up in the sunlight.

The Doctor simply killed them immediately in the most effective way.

Like who, various villagers? It's difficult to establish a setting where humans are being preyed upon without characters getting killed. The buildup would have been a lot less effective if it'd just been a bunch of unnamed villagers dying. The death/Shikiization of Nao/her family and various similar subplots did a lot to reenforce some things the show was trying to emphasize, in particular the explotative and manipulative nature of the core Shiki group's power over the converted villagers.
