Have there ever been so many creative female directors working in the industry? There were always profilic female mangaka, composers, character designers and for obvious reasons seiyuu but directors weren't too common. Sayo Yamamoto, Naoko Yamada, Rie Matsumoto and Atsuko Ishizuka all had their directional debuts in the last 10 years and are some of the more prominenent new directors to come out in that time period in general.

Is there a reason for this? I can't the imagine the industry having been somehow less open to women earlier on, but maybe I'm wrong.

>Is there a reason for this?
Yes. Women having real and open-ended careers is a relatively recent thing.

>There were always profilic female mangaka, composers, character designers
I'm pretty sure this is wrong.

Interesting.

>I can't the imagine the industry having been somehow less open to women earlier on, but maybe I'm wrong.
Probably not so much the industry as society itself discouraging women from working which even in Japan seems to be slowly changing.

>>135881826
>I'm pretty sure this is wrong.
In the first generation (Osamu Tezuka) there probably weren't, but the next generation already had Rumiko Takahashi.

It's not, anime, and manga in particular, have had a large number of women involved in their creation since fairly early on in the industries history, there just weren't as many women in a directorial position, which could be from a number of reasons.
>>
>>135881971
Oh, excuse me, I didn't think that your definition of "always" started in 84.
>>
>>135881997
Dude the anime industry didn't even take off until the 80s. Also you have to remember, the comiket that we have now originated from fujoket.
>>
Yamada made K-ON! when she was 24 years old.
>>
>>135882057
I'm not saying women aren't important.
I'm saying there was a point when they had no prolific roles in the industry yet.
>>
>>135881913
Well, I wouldn't say most. There are still lots of great male directors that had their works done in the last decade, some of them starting at a similar time: Masaaki Yuasa, Kenji Nakamura, Tsurumaki, Imaishi, Yoshinari etc. I think these are also bigger names than the females in the OP, but they still do stand out and as I mentioned there weren't too many before. In fact I can't think of a single one.

I think Oishi is a promising director as well, he directed Bake and every Monogatari after that felt so hollow without him.

>>135881826
Retard.

>>135881629
I want to impregnate all japanese women equally.
>>
>>135882611
True, Oishi is great, so would be Takahiro Omori, Takeshi Koike. Hell, I think Shinbo is good director too, when he really is the one working on a series and not just supervising it. Plus we've still got people from the earlier generations working in the industry like Ikuhara, Maeda or Okiura.
>>
>>135882981
>Okiura
>good
Not after shit like A Letter to Momo and Robot on The Road.
>>
>>135883027
What's bad about them? I know they aren't as dark and fatalistic as Jin-rou but I think that's good.
>>
>>135883175
Momo was a dull family film while Robot on the Road was creepy and sexist.
>>
>>135883027
I haven't seen MoMo but while Robot on the Road's story was complete dogshit, there was nothing wrong with how it was directed.
>>
I think the fact that manga is a work for which you stay at home helped. It was probably considered a suitable job for women, compared to the work of a director where you go to a studio and are in charge of a big number of people.

>>135881826
>>There were always profilic female mangaka, composers, character designers
>I'm pretty sure this is wrong.

I don't know for character designer but for mangaka:

It's kind of a particular case but there's Machiko Hasegawa who did Sazae-san ( started in 1946)
Miyako Maki, Leiji Matsumoto's wife, did manga (starting in 1957) before she married him. I'm not sure how popular she was but she received an award.
Then In the 70s there's the big boom of the Year 24 Group.
>>
>>135883175
Robot on The Road on the road is extremely problematic.
This kind of sexist garbage is what drives female creators away from the industry.

Sexism is a real problem in anime industry.
KyoAni lost many female artists when they decided to make Phantom World.

Robot on The Road has no female animator.
You know why?
because no woman wants to make sexist garbage.

Japan still treats their women like childish fuck toys whose only goal in life should be to look pretty and birth children at a young age.

Visually Kekkai Sensen was astonishing in the 4 first episodes. Too bad she couldn't adapt the manga in a way that didn't suck complete dick. Hoping she and Hirao bounce back from thshitty 2015 track record.
