What does /a/ think of Daicon IV?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTB9rzP2efE

Has animation become more lazy and CGI oriented over time?

I think Anno should of grabbed the original film reels of Daicon III and IV whilst he was in the Gainax vault collecting the NGE masters before those bozos burn the building to the ground to collect the insurance money.

Nowadays, not many interested working as animator in Japan when they got paid at slave rate. So they must make any animation as cheap (and easy) as possible.

Yesterday I was watching Metropolis again, and I was reminded of how pretty CGI animation can be if the director and animators are good enough to blend them in.

I still miss hand drawn mechanical design. I can appreciate nicely drawn cars, tanks, planes, robots, power suits, whatever... I like hand drawn animation because it is moving pictures. And you can easily see animator's drawing skills when those things are moving. I don't care about super detailed 3D CGI models being rendered from every possible angle.

I also miss painted backgrounds. Today most shows have weird 3D CGI backgrounds or copy-pasted stock pictures (or both). Often the background doesn't really go well with drawing style of the characters. Sure, sometimes there still is painted or drawn background here and there, but is rather scarce on TV shows.
>>
>>135836269
This shit is so full of holes, goddamn
Budget has little to do with animation quality. Evangelion was drawn on recycled animation cels Anno got rummaging through Miyazaki's trash and OPM has a pretty typical budget for a seasonal anime.
OVAs simply do not exist anymore, which is why people use them as an example of good animation. OVAs are basically what DLC is to video games-- an extra episode with maybe some anime tiddies. The only exception I can think of recently is Carnival Phantasm.
Anyone who knows anything (read:not the dumb redditor who made that) knows that TV animation hit its peak in the late 90s, before getting sent back to the 70s again with digital animation. Animation the 60s and 70s was awful. Toei made bad animation their business.

>>
>>135836814
The early 2000s had some great looking stuff like Planetes, Gankutsuo and Texhnolyze. The 70s also had some really nice looking stuff.

What I'm getting at is that there is always ana exception so trying to generalise why animation is good can't be done.

How does one even fansub VHSs?

I like handdrawn/cel-painted because it just has that certain look that's given to it via the entire process and film. I think it also just might be my fondness for 80s character design branching off wildly from all the sameface of the 70s.
>>
>>135836828

Something I would note though is that Cel animation has far better colour and texture and blends layers together better than digital animation.

Digital colouring always looks flat to me.

I've always wondered if you can make digital animation look like cel animation with filters, but even big budget Ghibli digital stuff suffers from flat colouring and background/characters not blending.

In terms of animation, while I think there is better animation today on average, I don't think its that controversial to say the OVA's and Movies of the 90s had by far the best animation anime has ever seen.
>>
>>135837060

cute
>>
>>135837034
Exceptions are what justify generalizations, though.
Good animation is the outlier nowadays because anime is produced cheaply by fanboy otaku who don't have technical skill. Back in the 80s and 90s there were a shit ton of high quality OVAs and movies, and studios like Sunrise were shitting out gold TV anime like it was nothing.
>>
>>135837112
Daicon IV certainly looks neater and has much better animation, but it's also too messy and over the top. Daicon III actually feels like a nice little piece of animation. I prefer cute story filled with references than some flashy extravaganza of references on acid.
>>
>>135837060
With a Commodore Amiga and a lot of patience.
>>
>>135837199
There's no shading on the characters in that still of Ponyo, that's why it looks flat.
>>
>>135837199
>blends layers together better than digital animation.
Hell no, layers are more noticeable in cel anime, especially on lesser productions. Digital composite is much more efficient and better, nowadays it's mostly a matter of proper art direction to make sure things blend together.

>80s character design

Japan aesthetically peaked in the 80s, this is fact.

Also 80s and 90s had the best character designs, this is because cel animation allows for much more detail in character design due to the hand done colouring process, while most colouring today is done with the fill tool, it's why modern anime designs have a lot of space and are very angular, so its easier to colour.

Hell even compare the design between Rebuild and the TV and you'll actually notice the design has been made simpler.
>>
>>135837533
>this is because cel animation allows for much more detail in character design due to the hand done colouring process
Digital or traditional colouring has no bearing on the level of detail in character designs.

Yeah, it's similar in detail. The real change is the colour contrast in lighter and darker tones. It's lesser in the digital version. Bear in mind that this is no limitation of digital colouring, but rather a conscious decision on the staff's part. Whether this is more or less visually appealing is another story though.

As someone who actually LIVED through the 70s, 80s, 90s, and 2000s this statement is absolute trash.

The problem you, and most everyone here has, is they watch only a slice of anime from those periods, almost always the most talked about (hint best) shows completely ignoring the heaps of shit we had to wade through during the 70s, 80s, and 90s to get to the gems.

Now you are faced with the same problem we oldfags had for decades, you need to wade through heaps of trash to find the good quality shit and you wonder why it couldn't be like it so obviously was 20 years ago, a period you only heard about from the internet.

The people making and directing the art are far more important than the tools that they have been given. This is a show from 2003, the fucking dark ages of anime art thanks to the rocky adoption of and adaption to digital technology. What you make it with and when you make it gives it a certain visual flavour and personality but it isn't the deciding factor like some claim.
