Shouko is a smart little girl that only serves to be a plot device to make the show take an interestnig turn.
L-Elf exists to "fix" the Module and move it along. Great character development and doesn't exit the show as he entered.
The side characters are interesting stereotypes with good change, development, and impact on the plot.
The villains are unpredictable, and interesting with great motivations other than being mustache twirlingly evil.

Space vampire. If you don't know what is right with this already, you are an idiot. But aside from that lots happens and gets accomplished.

Valvrave had great animation. The animation was fluid and sterile which didn't make everything come off as slow and sluggish and doesn't create a dissonance between the narrative and the animation. One of the perks of CGI animation is the abilitiy to pull off more interesting and/or difficult choreogrophy and cinematogrophy. Valvrave, infact, did so and utilized a dynamic camera with absolutely interesting compositions.

Haruto constantly grows up, always changes, has impact on the main plot or rest of the cast, and is overall useful.
And no this is not "common." The point of having a character start out weak is so they can grow and become strong. Instead Haruto had development, constantly faced his problems and doesn't have to be forced into the plot and then be useless as someone else resolves it because he can't. His death is meaningful because he was a hero.

Now, I'll say that the high point of the show was Saki. I mean, I really, really liked Saki. She reminded me of the delicious cripple from Guilty Crown: She deserved a way better love interest than the one she actually got.

It's not a password. They're casting magic spells.

You see, the Magus are basically a nanomachine cloud. Their mana and the HP is the same thing. When Cain and what's-her-name are chanting, they're converting part of their nanomachines into whatever effect they want.

Technically, nanomachines can do anything. You're just burning up part of your 'soul' to do it, because Magus are 100% made of nanomachines. Even the Valvrave vampires are sentient nanomachine clouds inhabiting their now-imperishable bodies.

Hell, it's why Haruto and Mari died! Piloting the Valvrave constantly depletes their Runes, which means that it's burning up their nanomachines. They lose memories because part of their data is gone. You can't die from 'not having memories', you die because your consciousness is extinguished.

I love Shinji more than I care about Haruto, but this is false. Shinji is a whiny bitch who needed to end the fucking world to get over his issues of getting close to people and open up. He's a coward, who does what he's told because he wants his father's and everyone's approval. He's also apathetic and couldn't give a shit if the world ended as long as people caved to him. He even said so in episode 24.

Haruto meanwhile was selfless to the point of martyrhood in the end. He accepted he was going to burn and he decided to give up his entire self to love the world regardless if they are going to hurt him and betray him (which did happen until Shinji's fears and fantasies). He was able to open himself and trust L-Elf who had more issues than Rei, Misato and Asuka put together.

As a person, Haruto was way stronger than Shinji would ever dream of being. But Shinji is a great character while Haruto is more generic.
