Watched this at grandma's, that one tape I had tape ran hot. The people who made Rai knew that kids want to be scared and see cute animals pierced through the throat with spears. She also had Macross, which made an enormous impact on me. As far as I was concerned Star Wars wasn't shit, they had no Itano circus. The Daedalus attack is always nostalgic to watch.

1990 my brother's friend got him every single episode of the Macross Saga on video cassette, it was taped off TV
1996 my friend introduced me to Ranma 1/2. Up until that point I had some idea some of the cartoons I watched as a kid weren't from the US but I had no idea what Japanese animation was. Ranma 1/2 was the first show I watched I knew was from Japan. I began watching show after show after show I could get my hands on. Luckily I had copies of Robotech on tape I could copy and trade. Picked up everything from Evangelion to 10 Little Gal Force and everything in between.

1998 I graduated from college with a Liberal Studies degree (seriously, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life) I used that degree to get a variety of jobs from test grader to proofreader and used the money to buy DVDs and fansubs.

That's pretty much it. I'm 40, been on 4chan for 9 years, back in school getting a degree in geology. I read and understand Japanese and play a lot of eroge. I took a few Japanese classes back in college.

First anime I ever saw was IGPX very early in the morning (as a little kid I'd sometimes get up 4-5 in the morning, what I wouldn't give to have that kind of energy again). Later Pokemon and YuGiOh, which are pretty standard fare on American TV. Then Toonami did their "Month of Miyazaki" which is where I first learned that Japanese animation was a distinct category, and that it way outclassed anything in the West. I watched some Naruto and One Piece via Toonami, but of course the block ended up folding in 2008.

I kinda grew away from all animation soon after that, and moved towards non-fiction educational TV. I started coming to 4chan in 2009, but I was almost purely a /b/tard for a while.

One thing that finally did rekindle my interest was as a HS senior, it turns out that Spirited Away was on the curriculum. Man, did that bring back memories. It also got me thinking again about Japanese culture.

Before I went off to college, I heard that the students were big into animu (largest college anime club in the region, with its own con), so that summer I figured, "Well, now's as good a time as any to get started, so I'll have something light to talk about with other people." Over the summer I watched FMA, then Burst Angel and GiTS. I discovered KLK just as it had finished its initial airing, and that definitely got me hooked.

I didn't really make the connection though between 4chan and anime until this previous summer. Once I did however, I've enjoyed the ride ever since.

That's my story, and hopefully now I won't have to explain it again.

My family's pretty open with anime and manga in general. my dad likes Berserk, Akira, and Robotech. Mom liked NGE and FMA when it came out. I was watching cartoon network one time and hit record on an episode of cardcaptors and was hooked on it since then.

I watched bits and pieces of a few series circa 2004-5 when my life was first derailed by this place (fuck year limewire and TV anime) but what started me down the path to full-blown weebdom was Dennou Coil. It was so goddamn good that I started looking for more when I finished it and I've been here full-time since - although I will mention that I don't go in for yuri, moebait shows or waifus/tulpas/merch/etc. like much of /a/ does. I went in for Japanese cooking, history, politics, etc. instead. I think I'd be more of a "japanophile" than a "weeaboo", but I think that also correlates to being a more complete and utter failure of a human being.

Watched Toonami + Pokemon as a kid but grew out of it and stopped watching anime until 2013.

After 6 years of being on 4chan every single day I finally gave in and watched an anime. Death Note dubbed (better than the sub btw, fight me). Liked it and went straight to K-On! (subbed) because I used to see the Keions posted so much on every board.

K-On! is now my favorite anime

Toonami for entry-level English shit, then in middle school my friend gave me a disc with FMP! subbed on it and it was downhill from there.

Ironically it was K-On! around late 2011

I bought this special Japan issue of a gaming magazine that came with an anime sampler disc. It had the first episodes of a bunch of shows in English dub form. Being uninitiated the yaoi undertones of Black Butler and the fanservice of HOTD were a gigantic turnoff. But for whatever reason K-On! just really clicked with me. Probably because I was learning to play the guitar at the time and since I was awful at it I could relate a lot to Yui.

After that I decided to go out and buy the first two DVD volumes of the show that had been released in Australia at the time as well as the third a fourth volume when they came out. I also watched episodes of Haruhi, Death Note, Lucky Star and Code Geass on Youtube and I watched my first subtitled anime Yuru Yuri when I found out about Crunchyroll. When Bandai shut down and I didn't know whether they were going to dub the rest of K-On! I found out about fansubs and where to download them.

Everything spiralled out of control at that point and I've been watching anime since.

I guess Pokemon was kind of a precursor followed by DBZ? I remember seeing things like .Hack and Inuyasha in magazines and such and always wanting to see more because they looked cool, but they were always on too late for me. Gradually I started getting chances to watch them, initially more at sleepovers and such. It was hard to get into them and they went over my head, but I liked the characters and really wanted to like the shows. My best friend was more into it and helped me find shows to try.

The first show I remember really getting fully invested in (to the point of actually following the plot episode by episode and finishing it) was FMA. I read manga, watched what I could On Demand, eventually started trying to find shows on the internet, started going on gaia and so on and so forth. Now that I think about it, it would be kind of interesting to go back and try to watch some of the old shows I managed to find only a couple of episodes of when I was young.

Yu-Gi-Oh in 2003. Started w/ collecting the cards, then I picked up the anime. From there I watched anime on TV 'til 2010 when I went on hiatus for 4 years. Came back to anime in Fall 2014 & got serious about it.

Found Wolf's Rain on my ISP's FTP back in 2005. Maybe it's just nostalgia at this point but it remains in my top 10. Although personally I would never recommend it to someone who's never seen anime.

I was a spic, so anime was preety normal back then. Caballeros del Zodiaco, Ranma, Dragon Ball, Slam Dunk, all widely known and accepted.

Then, on online videogames forums, everyone had tags with anime characters on it, and ended up watching Bleach on Youtube.

I remember episodes were divided into 3 parts because Youtube only allowed a maximum of 10:00 min videos.

It all has come a long way

Like a lot of people, of course I grew up with Sailor Moon, DB, DBZ, etc.

However, I didn't start actively watching anime until 2009, in my sophomore year of high school. It started because of a girl I was dating got me into it. She is a black weaboo and was pretty chill. We watched tons of shows together as they came out. It was tons of fun.

Fast forward to December of 2015, and I try to get back in touch with her as we went to different colleges and broke up, etc. Turns out she goes by "Aion" now, and identifies as a man, and is in a relationship with another girl with some stupid RP-sounding name that I don't remember who also identifies as a man.

It's really weird.

/v/ told me about Haruhi, so I decided to watch it, and then I watched a few more shows, then I stopped for about half a year until I decided to watch Clannad, and I've been hooked ever since.

They aired anime in catalan dub on TV and it was my main tv entertainment when I was a kid. Good times.

I went to the library after school just about every day to sit in the corner and read random books. That corner was just behind the young adult and the manga section. At first none of the manga titles interested me, so I stuck to the novels in the young adult section. But one day I decided to pick up pic related on a whim. To this day it's still one of my personal favorites, though mostly for nostalgic reasons. But they we're missing the last volume so I decided to check out some other ones. I wound up reading just about all the manga there before actually searching for anime/manga on the internet. Black cat was also my first experience with shity adaptations of a manga. I wanted to see some of the fights animated, but the black cat anime was so shity I just dropped it.
