>>135813274 Same here. I was intrigued by some of what I read in anime rec threads on /b/ which quickly led to my own discoveries among some of the best shows from the 21st century and I was hooked:

>>135812780 I took an exchange trip to Japan. Given that 70% of the others on the trip were weeb by the time I got back I thought I'd HAVE to give anime a try. Then I found out my best friend was hiding powerlevel and when he discovered I wasn't averse to anime he sperged out recommending me all sorts. The rest is unfortunate history.
I saw Mononoko Hime on a /k/ stream a few years ago. After seeing Girls und Panzer related pics on /k/ a few times I decided t watch it and I enjoyed it. After that I just kept watching stuff that friends reccomended or that looked interesting.
Watched FMA:B and some episodes of Cowboy Bebop on toonami a long time ago. Watched only Cowboy Bebop/Naruto/Mushishi/Bleach/Darker than Black over the span of years. Watched SAO on a whim one day, discovered how effective an escape anime could be. Slowly turned into a hobby after that.
>>135815440 Nah I am just really good friends with her. Go over to her place and watch anime together on the weekends. She has pure disdain for moe shit which I find odd. I think of her as a brother honestly.
Watched this at grandma's, that one tape I had tape ran hot. The people who made Rai knew that kids want to be scared and see cute animals pierced through the throat with spears. She also had Macross, which made an enormous impact on me. As far as I was concerned Star Wars wasn't shit, they had no Itano circus. The Daedalus attack is always nostalgic to watch.
>>135812780 I already knew some mainstream dbz op naruto you GI oh but i wasnr realy into it although i didnt knew there are more oft the genre .. So i got into it by hearing a Name yuno gasai i searched in the web and found future diary and i was like wtf i need more of this shit.. This is where my love to anime started xD
1978 my brothers and I watched the original Gatchaman on TV 1984 my brothers and I watched Tranzor Z on TV (Mazinger Z) 1985 my brothers and I watched Voltron on TV 1985-6 my brothers and I watched Robotech on TV. Out of desperation we also watched Sylvanian Families because the voice actors were the same from Robotech. 1990 my brother's friend got him every single episode of the Macross Saga on video cassette, it was taped off TV 1996 my friend introduced me to Ranma 1/2. Up until that point I had some idea some of the cartoons I watched as a kid weren't from the US but I had no idea what Japanese animation was. Ranma 1/2 was the first show I watched I knew was from Japan. I began watching show after show after show I could get my hands on. Luckily I had copies of Robotech on tape I could copy and trade. Picked up everything from Evangelion to 10 Little Gal Force and everything in between.
1998 I graduated from college with a Liberal Studies degree (seriously, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life) I used that degree to get a variety of jobs from test grader to proofreader and used the money to buy DVDs and fansubs.
That's pretty much it. I'm 40, been on 4chan for 9 years, back in school getting a degree in geology. I read and understand Japanese and play a lot of eroge. I took a few Japanese classes back in college.
Sorry for the blog but you did ask. To make up for being a dick, I'm reading this for /jp/, it's something I guess. You can join in and read along or whatever >>>/jp/14505023 starts here https://warosu.org/jp/thread/S14283655
I watched 1000 Haruhi flash loops when I was 11, then dropped Lucky Star while it was airing, then watched Kill la Kill, then followed that up with Eva and Madoka, and decided to that CGDCT is the way to go.
I infrequently watched DBZ and Pokémon as a child. In middle school, my friend forced me to watch two episodes of FMA, which didn't interest me. Then, in high school, I watched Attack on Titan, which prompted me to watch other shows, including:
Knights of Sidonia Sagebu Kill la Kill TTGL Barakamon Space Dandy Steins;Gate Code Geass Nichijou K ON (2011) Ghost Stories (dubbed) Neon Genesis Evangelion I Can't Understand what my Husband is Saying Himouto Umaru-chan Parasyte Death Note Dragonball Super Gangsta Watamote Non non biyori Maria the Virgin Witch Yatterman Night Squid Girl
First anime I ever saw was IGPX very early in the morning (as a little kid I'd sometimes get up 4-5 in the morning, what I wouldn't give to have that kind of energy again). Later Pokemon and YuGiOh, which are pretty standard fare on American TV. Then Toonami did their "Month of Miyazaki" which is where I first learned that Japanese animation was a distinct category, and that it way outclassed anything in the West. I watched some Naruto and One Piece via Toonami, but of course the block ended up folding in 2008.
I kinda grew away from all animation soon after that, and moved towards non-fiction educational TV. I started coming to 4chan in 2009, but I was almost purely a /b/tard for a while.
One thing that finally did rekindle my interest was as a HS senior, it turns out that Spirited Away was on the curriculum. Man, did that bring back memories. It also got me thinking again about Japanese culture.
Before I went off to college, I heard that the students were big into animu (largest college anime club in the region, with its own con), so that summer I figured, "Well, now's as good a time as any to get started, so I'll have something light to talk about with other people." Over the summer I watched FMA, then Burst Angel and GiTS. I discovered KLK just as it had finished its initial airing, and that definitely got me hooked.
I didn't really make the connection though between 4chan and anime until this previous summer. Once I did however, I've enjoyed the ride ever since.
That's my story, and hopefully now I won't have to explain it again.
Pic: First anime image I posted to 4chan, late one night to /b/ while watching Toonami in college.
>>135812780 Other boards talking about the really popular stuff got me interested enough to give it a shot. Then I liked it enough to start keeping up with seasonal stuff. Now I spend all of my time here instead.
>>135818380 I left my teens with less than 10 shows. I feel like I wasted my precious youth.
My family's pretty open with anime and manga in general. my dad likes Berserk, Akira, and Robotech. Mom liked NGE and FMA when it came out. I was watching cartoon network one time and hit record on an episode of cardcaptors and was hooked on it since then.
>>135812780 I watched bits and pieces of a few series circa 2004-5 when my life was first derailed by this place (fuck year limewire and TV anime) but what started me down the path to full-blown weebdom was Dennou Coil. It was so goddamn good that I started looking for more when I finished it and I've been here full-time since - although I will mention that I don't go in for yuri, moebait shows or waifus/tulpas/merch/etc. like much of /a/ does. I went in for Japanese cooking, history, politics, etc. instead. I think I'd be more of a "japanophile" than a "weeaboo", but I think that also correlates to being a more complete and utter failure of a human being.
>>135812780 Watched Toonami + Pokemon as a kid but grew out of it and stopped watching anime until 2013.
After 6 years of being on 4chan every single day I finally gave in and watched an anime. Death Note dubbed (better than the sub btw, fight me). Liked it and went straight to K-On! (subbed) because I used to see the Keions posted so much on every board.
After i had sex with my girlfriend I noticed she had the FMA brotherhood BD on her desk and said her friend gave it to her to watch and we ended up watching it together, pretty comfy Tbh. Then i started watching other shit like it weeks later.
I saw parts of Yu Yu Hakusho when I was pretty young, and never remembered what it was, just that it was an awesome cartoon Then years later I wanted to watch that cool show from when I was little again, but could never find it on TV Eventually I was flipping through channels and somehow it was airing
It was the only anime I watched for years since I thought anime was for losers
https://youtu.be/RSe8D2wfGKI >tfw the pirate rap hooked me on One Piece >tfw waking up early so I could catch it Christ, I remember it so vividly. Though, that was my first exposure, yigioh 5Ds was my true gateway anime when I was about 15. Shit was so fucking cool, I mean the opening was shitty but I still loved the fuck out of it
>>135823934 Believe it or not, anime clubs *do* talk about is, though it's often in the sort of hushed whispers and "THAT site" that makes you figure out that we're kinda the forces of darkness to people out there.
When I was younger I was flipping through channels and switch over to CN while Toonami was running, and I managed to catch the last ten minutes of the last episode of the first season of Sailor Moon. And, I've continued to have things spoiled for me ever since.
>>135812780 Tried Bleach and To Love-Ru in middle school but never really got into it. One day I caught the Rammiel fight from 1.11 on the FUNimation channel while surfing for TV-MA boobs and shit. Thus, an Evafag was born. Pic not related.
>>135812780 I watched Hanaukyo Maid Team Tai on youtube. After that i watched Hanaukto Maid Team La Verite and Mahoromatic the same way. Had a maid fetish, and anime was the lewdest, strangest stuff my 7th grade self had ever seen.
>>135827775 I stopped browsing /b/ a long time ago, like any rational person would. I'm sure plenty of illegal stuff goes on there, but it's probably reported often enough that they don't need to actively search for it. Or, enlighten me on what's going on?
>>135827859 The downfall in the quality of /b/ is explained in the screencap. /b/ is also extremely fast, so a thread with CP could last a minute and go undetected without DoJ monitoring. Regular mods couldn't report every thread.
>>135812780 In late 90s I watched Dragon Half, instantly fell in love with Mink and furiously fapped to her numerous times. Soon after that I moved on Ghost in the Shell movie which i didn't find fappable.
>Know about 4chan since around 08 or 09 through ED >Start lurking and using /b/ around late 2010 >Move to /sp/ and /v/ a year later >See K-on reaction images everywhere >"Lmao, this shit is gay" as I put up crunchyroll or YouTube or something to watch it >Enjoy it, watch Squidgirl, Anohana, Clannad and enjoy them. Think that AS is the best shit on earth and nothing could top it. >Begin browsing /a/ in the summer of 13' >Get banned and called a faggot a lot >Don't understand why muh rec threads are deleted and why /a/ is a bunch of pretentious cocksuckers >Begin watching seasonal stuff >Begin using /a/ in a not as gay manner >Enjoy myself watching what I like and calling people faggots on /a/
4chan is the only reason why I started watching anime, built a PC, bought some firearms, among other things. Weird how a site full of autists has given me a variety of interests.
I bought this special Japan issue of a gaming magazine that came with an anime sampler disc. It had the first episodes of a bunch of shows in English dub form. Being uninitiated the yaoi undertones of Black Butler and the fanservice of HOTD were a gigantic turnoff. But for whatever reason K-On! just really clicked with me. Probably because I was learning to play the guitar at the time and since I was awful at it I could relate a lot to Yui.
After that I decided to go out and buy the first two DVD volumes of the show that had been released in Australia at the time as well as the third a fourth volume when they came out. I also watched episodes of Haruhi, Death Note, Lucky Star and Code Geass on Youtube and I watched my first subtitled anime Yuru Yuri when I found out about Crunchyroll. When Bandai shut down and I didn't know whether they were going to dub the rest of K-On! I found out about fansubs and where to download them.
Everything spiralled out of control at that point and I've been watching anime since.
I guess Pokemon was kind of a precursor followed by DBZ? I remember seeing things like .Hack and Inuyasha in magazines and such and always wanting to see more because they looked cool, but they were always on too late for me. Gradually I started getting chances to watch them, initially more at sleepovers and such. It was hard to get into them and they went over my head, but I liked the characters and really wanted to like the shows. My best friend was more into it and helped me find shows to try.
The first show I remember really getting fully invested in (to the point of actually following the plot episode by episode and finishing it) was FMA. I read manga, watched what I could On Demand, eventually started trying to find shows on the internet, started going on gaia and so on and so forth. Now that I think about it, it would be kind of interesting to go back and try to watch some of the old shows I managed to find only a couple of episodes of when I was young.
Started watching it as a kid. Old school stuff like Yu Yu Hakusho, Hunter x Hunter, Voltes V, Daimos, DBZ, Lupin III, Gundam, among others. They were localized in my own country so it was easy to watch.
Same. I remember when it first aired, I was fucking addicted. Watched it on our family's 8in B&W TV. Got to the episode where the Yamato sustained massive damage after firing the canon and the fucking TV tube blew. Family too poor to buy a new one. Never finished it.
Didn't find anime again until early 90s when I rented "Warriors of the Wind". Rent that fucking thing a million times.
Few years later, found Suncoast Motion Picture and it was goodbye paychecks.
I watched stuff like Ranma 1/2 and Akazukin Chacha as a kid, didn't even know what anime was back then, I watched them like regular cartoons
Then I watched an episode of Zoids and got hooked, I wondered why regular cartoons couldn't be episodic Then Gundam, and kid shows like Beyblade, Yugioh and Crush gear turbo
then I discovered a channel that aired subbed anime: Rave, Vandread, Galaxy Angel, Cooking master boy, NieA_7 etc. started to appreciate the attention to detail in anime, this was also the time I started really liking anime girls
then came the shonen phase I realized that I really like the comedy in anime a friend recommended school anime like azumanga daioh and school rumble while looking for school romantic comedies this was when I stumbled upon Haruhi
then came Lucky Star, then K-ON! and here I am today
>>135812780 After school cartoons. But if we're talking about things normalfags don't watch, then it would be the year I had major depression and had fucked up my honours at uni. I asked a friend on a whim to get for me some popular shows I'd heard of, and so it all began. Coincidentally, the threats of being kicked out of my house began with it.
I was bored out of my mind after breaking up with my first girlfriend like 7 years ago. As a dirty spic I started rewatching all DBZ then proceeded to watch Yu Yu Hakusho and Trigun, which were part of Animax schedule. After that it was only downhill, I became autistic, discovered /a/ and was influenced into thinking 2D girls were much better than 3D which destroyed my then good social life. At least now there is only regret and cringe.
My dad had SDF Macross, Gundam, Gatchaman, Gunsmith Cats, and a few other VHS tapes laying around the house. I ended up watching them right along with Barney, Sesame Street, and Thomas the Tank Engine growing up.
That little fuck hamtaro and the samurai pizza cats first sucked me in and then I figured out that they showed cooler shit late on TV and gundam, Ranma 1/2, card captor and sailor moon were the finishing touch
Kill Bill made me interested in anime the I was a child. I grew up watching Ghibli movies and Pokemon, then moved to popular "serious" stuff like NGE and Hellsing. For me it was just a way to kill time, I could spend a coulpe of years without watching anything. What really hooked me on anime was Nichijou, which I decided to watch because I saw OP somewhere. I am a moeshit consumer since then.
Naruto , granted I didn't know that it was anime, and didn't know that is anime. Shuffle! was my first choice I cried like a bitch and because of it I got impression that every romance anime has batshit crazy sweet childhood friend
>>135812780 I was in high-school and noticed I'm basically a loser and 4chan is the only place where I actually have fun so I might as well start watching anime. Really glad I started, the porn is a million times better than 3DPD.
>>135812780 >>135812780 My father fought the Japs in WW2. He was a prisoner of war for some years then lived in Japan a bit more before the government helped soldiers like him come back home. He came home with a bunch of Japanese comics. The rest is history. Been a weeb ever since.
When I was 7 or 8 my dad hired for me Urotsukidoji and Battle Angel Alita and that was my foray into actual proper anime, after that Ghost in the Shell and Akira. I was like 7 at the time, I had no fucking clue what was going on but I loved the action and animation.
We also had Robotech and Sailor Moon back then as well, but I didn't know they were "anime".
>>135812780 Used to watch stuff like NGE and death note in a tv site around 2010 but i was not that into it, it was until i discovered this site and thanks to a full blown weeb friend who told me to watch some anime, then the downward spiral started, fun times
>>135812780 My first complete anime series was Kaicho wa Maid Sama My cousin was watching it, as a curious 17 year old, i sat with her and completed the entire series in less than 2 days Then came a huge lovesick period because the the main girl was so cute and i didn't have any more episodes to watch. The i read the manga, and finally the i got my hands on cousin's anime collection. It was mostly (very) light yaoi or shoujo stuff but some were shounen too, it was fun. And finally i started browsing /a/, and downloading anime.
>>135835234 >taking a poll seriously Let's say, hypothetically, no proxies were involved what would piss /a/ the most? The answer is obvious. The thread was pure shitposting in any case, nothing can concluded.
>>135829052 >Weird how a site full of autists has given me a variety of interests. You can say that again. Years back arguing with some faggot on /v/ made me build my own pc and got me into it. Various easy recipe pics from /b/ and /fit/ got me into cooking. Reading the sticky and browsing /o/ made me get a Miata and work on it myself. /a/ made me listen to nothing but Anime songs.
Watched Pokemon and other things growing up. Faded out of it for a while but then my freshmen year of high school came and I was trying to bone this nerdy girl who was all about it. So I ended up watching anime again. That was like 11 years ago. Cant even remember her full name anymore but here I am still watching anime.
then i found one board other than /a/ and found peace through it
then i stopped caring about opinions that i had adapted from others and started to see with my own eyes, making my opinions pretty much neutral
brother hasnt do so, i dont know how could i, but perhaps he is different kind of person on some level
i started to browse /a/ and got my first taste of less common anime, it was all good until it started to repeat itself, thats why sertain series really caught my interest because they didnt repeat itself so much. some points simply go to well drawn series, but still they lack charaster which is a shame
>>135812780 Yu-Gi-Oh in 2003. Started w/ collecting the cards, then I picked up the anime. From there I watched anime on TV 'til 2010 when I went on hiatus for 4 years. Came back to anime in Fall 2014 & got serious about it.
The first anime that I can remember myself watching was probably... Yu Yu Hakusho the movie. Then End of Evangelion (yes, I watched the movie first) and then just whatever my dad bought from the vid store. It was great.
>>135825307 I feel like both you guys are asleep, but I talked to her outside of WoW too. On steam she was talking about something and she had to go run to dinner, then she never came back. She was just gone. I was okay with it but in the bqck of my mind she was always there.
>>135812780 Someone recommended to me Spice and Wolf, I liked it, then I started lurking /a/ and building up a backlog of whatever shows were talked about and looked good and watching seasonal anime. I did watch some anime before that like Bleach or GitS, but I didn't "get into" it until I started lurking /a/
>>135812780 Like a lot of people, of course I grew up with Sailor Moon, DB, DBZ, etc.
However, I didn't start actively watching anime until 2009, in my sophomore year of high school. It started because of a girl I was dating got me into it. She is a black weaboo and was pretty chill. We watched tons of shows together as they came out. It was tons of fun.
Fast forward to December of 2015, and I try to get back in touch with her as we went to different colleges and broke up, etc. Turns out she goes by "Aion" now, and identifies as a man, and is in a relationship with another girl with some stupid RP-sounding name that I don't remember who also identifies as a man.
I went to the library after school just about every day to sit in the corner and read random books. That corner was just behind the young adult and the manga section. At first none of the manga titles interested me, so I stuck to the novels in the young adult section. But one day I decided to pick up pic related on a whim. To this day it's still one of my personal favorites, though mostly for nostalgic reasons. But they we're missing the last volume so I decided to check out some other ones. I wound up reading just about all the manga there before actually searching for anime/manga on the internet. Black cat was also my first experience with shity adaptations of a manga. I wanted to see some of the fights animated, but the black cat anime was so shity I just dropped it.
