This is where Frontier shines with its Dark Spirits. That fucking goblin guy just wrecks the shit out of the protagonists for a couple of episodes.

Yamato's sudden turn to darkness was extremely bad, cringeworthy writing that was obviously a shit excuse to have Wargreymon and Metalgarurumon fight each other.

And it's just insult to injury that the tree Digimon that made Yamato go edge in the first place wasn't even killed by Yamato and instead got a stereotypical "you have failed me" death from Pinocchimon.

When you rewatch the series as an adult, you realize how lazy the whole show is. A quarter of the show is the stock digivolution sequence, stock attack animations, every villain that you thought was epic as a kid dies too easily and doesn't even do anything cool looking. The return to the real world comes and ends super quick compared to the memories I had of it as a kid. But I did enjoy the whole digital mystique it had, telephones in a beach, etc. If the animation was the same as the movies it might be watchable.

Then it seems you missed the whole point of the series, I just rewatched it before Tri came out by the way. The series is all about the characters and how they evolve along with their partners through the series, is an adventure, a fantastic adventure. I loved the music no matter how many times I hear it, and I actually liked the animation and stock animation you mention but maybe that's the nostalgia talking, but as an adult I appreciate the whole message and story more than when I was a kid.

Vamdemon was honestly ridiculous. Garudamon, Weregarurumon, and Angemon put up decent fights, but then he could fight 6 Digimon his level. VenomVamdemon was just as crazy. Adventure only had like 10 Ultimate levels which is pretty weird from the perspective of the whole franchise and for power level shit.

The Dark Masters were created by Apocalymon and existed for a long time. Gatomon got seperated from the rest of the Digidestined because Gennai was trying to escape from Piedmon.

I think they didn't show up earlier on in Adventures because they were busy fighting the Sovereigns and in the time of the Myotismon arc (remember that time passes a lot more slowly in the human world), the Dark Masters beat the Sovereigns and remodeled the Digital World. I can't remember for sure if that was when they beat the Sovereigns, but they did beat the Sovereigns at some point.

The Digidestineds honestly only stood a cahnce because both MetalSeadramon and Machinedramon were weak to Wargreymon's Dramon Killers and the Dark Masters were constantly outnumbered.
