The Third Impact was going to start automatically when the last angel is dead. It's in fucking EoE and I think NGE, when they talk of the promised day. Because Longinus (which is a key to control the Impact) will be back to Earth automatically after the last offspring is down (EoE happens a day or two after Kaworu's death). This is what Seele wanted. Once Kaworu is killed, shit will happen and you can't stop it. Impact could have happened if he lived and you get a merging, but after his death it would trigger a countdown to the end. The question was: who would control the Impact?

I think in general the problem is that Kaworu dies for Shinji but it's Shinji who ends the world. Kill Shinji, save humanity.

You'll notice that the next thing to be made (in the original at least) were the MP Evas. They had the process "streamlined" at that point (other than 04's S2 engine, naturally)

It's automatic: Eva 01 or Lilith were going to be ready for it. The angels were made by Seele to sacrifice them and control the ritual. But they need to kill the pilots or they would control it.

Longinus could only return after Kaworu's death. Or it'll stay in orbit. Now, it doesn't mean they wouldn't be ok with Kaworu merging Lilith and turning them to gods (which is exactly what happens).

People misunderstand the Impacts is death, no it's simply taking another form. Adam and Lilith destroy the vessels and then new ones are born. It's just pretty badly portrayed in NGE because Anno changed things on march, but Rebuild managed to solidify this idea of his clearly.

When Kaworu says that humanity/lilim would cease isn't because they'll die, but humanity would stop being the lifeforms of Earth. Those souls would be given angels vessels instead. Kaworu likes the lilim existence, their music, their culture. But that's with him. Not sure if it will work with random angels because they aren't seeds.
