Honestly the goblin and demon lord strike me as some sort of supreme power fantasy and it's not even subtle, so it bothers me.

I'd say Skellington from Overlord is in the middle of both so he gets a pass too, and the story doesn't really portray him as the messiah but as a morally grey guy, which kinda helps. He's still a huge power-fantasy like the rest but since the story is handled better you can enjoy it.

Well yeah, it's not like you can craft chromosomes and organic tissue just out of slime, but you can still take the form of whatever you want. Though you technically aren't male or female either way, you can still shape yourself however you wish, be it a cute big breasted slime "girl" or a featureless Dr. Manhattan-esque "male". Though it goes without say that the rules and mechanics of it are different for every series they might appear in, I don't expect the slimes in Dragon Quest to behave like the ones in the Monster Girl Encyclopedia for example, but slimes in general can take the shape of just about anything possible, provided they possess some degree of sentience. The title "I woke up and turned into a slime monster" immediately makes me think that in that situation, I could be a slimy loli one minute then a gelatinous caricature of Dirty Harry the next, I'd definitely be getting as much entertainment out of it as I could.

The failing of the story here is that the antagonists are never really that threatening themselves once the fight is actually underway. At most, they could just have the 'potential' to be really scary, but are too dumb to use their abilities correctly. Or they just have overwhelming power and that's about it. Then the antagonists come in two shades; total assholes who deserve what's coming to them (or forcefully corrected in one or two cases), or misunderstood, "morally grey" types who get converted to the good side or die sympathetic "deaths" (they may not even die in some cases). I mean, Leon and Clayman are pretty much big examples of this. Leon is built up to be really menacing, but was good all along and his value in the story greatly denigrates after his first major fight. Then there's Clayman who, it turns out, just got fucked up by Leon on the latter's mad quest to save his waifu and only wanted to hang out with his friends and be happy or some shit like that. Even the final antagonist gets out of all this just by being born fucked up and being given a chance for penance in the MC's stomach.

I guess the author wanted to try and make his villains "multi-facted" by giving them their own perspectives and not "entirely" evil if they're a major character, but they're just uninteresting in the end and ineffective. And I'm not just talking in comparison to the MC, but to all the characters allied with the MC. All the big guns on the antagonist side are pretty ineffective and unskillful compared to anyone from the good side, their only saving grace being how much raw strength they have. The only fights I found interesting were those that came from the "lower" tier within the MC's subordinates.

The story isn't really good with antagonists. It would have been better if it was just the MC and his friends fucking around and influencing the world, which the side-stories are doing. It's better like that rather than as a plot driven story.

Project Eden was created to save humanity (or the people that are willing to pay for it) by taking them to a safe world and Yggdrasil and other DMMORPG were a test in creating avatars for the people to inhabit, though I'm confused on how magic was part of the avatars, did they possibly find the NW wild magic and martial arts and refined it into ranked magic and skills.
