Ikki was definitely a gary stu and that ruined a lot of the show for me. He was a "flawless" character done wrong in my book. Onii-sama is up there as one of the best just because of how entertaining the situation usually is. His incarnations which pull of similar feats are always fun too.

iirc, ikki's power level has already been set on the premise of the show. Ittou shura, perfect vision, sword steal. His victories come from these 3 basically.

Now onisama.. good at using unique spells. can cancel magic. can disintegrate material. can develop flight magic. can develop quick cast. can nuclear nuke from a safe distance. can become jesus reviving people.

If the show is about the novelty of seeing what they do next, its good. Like One Outs. You know hes going to win, but you don't know how.

If its just some bullshit like he fires 3 billion lasers perfectly so he doesn't kill anyone, its shit, like Gundam Seed.

There are some shows that are somewhere in the middle. NGNL did it, but a lot of people didn't seem to realize it was more about seeing how they game the system than the tension of winning/losing.

I don't dislike flawless characters so much as I liked flawed characters. I usually get bored of shows where the protagonist is always succeeding, where he's always right, because it doesn't ever go anywhere worthwhile.

Really I don't mind Jesus Yamato that much because despite being an obvious perfect character, a lot of story happens around him and I can put him aside to focus on more interesting characters like Athrun. On the other hand, Sword Art Online is The Kirito Show and everything in that universe seems to shift towards him, the extended cast is there for no reason but to make him look good, so fuck that.
