He's a way better trainer than he was in the Indigo League. His strategies and training methods blow old Ash straight out of the water.

It's just that for some reason, the skill level of his tournament rivals go up each series. Because in the Indigo League, there was a dumbass who brought a fucking Arcanine to a water field. And then there was Richie who made it to the top 16 armed with a fucking Charmander, Butterfree and Pikachu. That's good enough to reach Top 16 in the Indigo League apparently. And there was really nothing special about Richie other than that he was overall more competent than Ash was back then. We never saw anything spectacular about him.

And then you reach Sinnoh, and the second match Ash has is a guy who completely analyzed all of Ash's battle styles and brought a team specifically in order to counter him. There was literally no one this competent in the Indigo League, or the Johto or Hoenn Leagues for that matter. There was NO ONE who was actually smart enough to bother analyzing their opponents and developing strategies specifically in order to counter them. There wasn't. Conway, the trainer in question, was Top 16 same as Richie was.

And then Ash went up against a guy who brought a bunch of fucking legendaries to the tournament and was the only one who managed to knock out the guy's Darkrai AND managed to take out his Latios as well. No one else could even touch Darkrai, not even the runner-up of the tournament.

So there's a huge sense of progression with the Ash back then and the Ash now, in terms of strategy and skill and everything, but for some reason, everyone else is moving up at roughly the same place. If Ash could go back in time and participate in the Indigo Tournament, there is no doubt in my mind that he would be able to win the whole thing with ease.

So either Indigo trainers are all just shit in general, or the world is actually going out of its way to try to keep Ash from winning a tournament.

Like, to put things in perspective. After beating Ash, Richie moved onto the Top 8 of the Indigo League.

In Sinnoh, Ash's Top 8 opponent was Paul, who was pretty clearly many times superior to Richie in terms of battle skill in every way. So there's just this very clear difference in terms of overall skill level compared to now and then.

If Indigo Ash tried to participate in the Sinnoh league, he wouldn't have gotten past the preliminaries.

Nowadays, Pokemon just kinda evolve when they need to, sometimes without even requiring the Pokemon to get into any battles beforehand. And moves? It really isn't. The people that "support" the ship are primarily dubfags and have no idea what dialogue was accurately translated and what was just made up by the dubbers. Someone that worked on the show in its original form and has no clue what the dub did to it pointing out that this dub-created romance didn't actually exist isn't some sort of radical statement. Sinnoh Ash was competent. He had his shit so down that the writers had to make him lose to a guy who brought a full team of legendaries and he still managed to take two down.
