What is your favorite mecha anime from the last 5 years?
Mine is Majestic Prince. I like the design of the mechs. Excellent battle scenes and one of the few anime where CGI looks good. Story, music and characters were all fun imo aswell.
I don't think I've finished any recent mecha series. I tried Majestic Prince but only got six or so episodes in. I liked the Bad News Bears meets Gundam thing they had going, but it felt like every idea there was half-formed and not explored fully enough.
It had a few good moments, but overall you didn't miss much.
I thought the last episode was actually decent, but it would have been much better if everything leading up to it had any weight.
Cross Ange is my favorite mecha series ever.
Fafner: Exodus. If you disagree, then you
probably didn't watch it.
Gargantia and Lagrange were two I kinda enjoyed.
Jesus christ, this millennium has been awful for mecha.
I liked Cross Ange too. It was so much fun watching it with /a/ and Ange is a qt.
It's not finished yet, but it's already among my favorite mecha anime.
Rin-Rin best girl
Except it was 7 years ago.
Now where's my fucking sequel?
At least we have the mango.
Actually, that ended a few months ago, sigh.
For the action scenes: Build Fighters S1
for the entertainment value: VVV or EVOL
for the character interaction: MJP
Overall best series: Unicorn. it had some flaw, but its a fucking kolossal
What are you talking about? The ending was great. As we were getting closer to the end of Exodus I was afraid they weren't going to be able to wrap up all the plot threads but rather than try and hastily do so they basically said "Yeah, wait for the next movie/OVA/series"
Which I'm fine with
Without the 2004 Series, OVA and movie, I can't rate it higher than 7/10 and that's if you don't mind not knowing a majority of the cast, their motives and their character arcs.
With all the previous material I'd put it at a 10/10 for myself.
You have to treat it like one big series.
Jumping into Exodus would be like jumping into a 58 episode series at episode 32. You've missed half the story. You'll bypass the wonky animation and slow opening, at the cost of all the world building and character development.
Fuck no. You can try, but you'll probably end up confused as hell and end up bitching about how nothing makes sense.
This, MJP, Fafner and Argevollen.
Honorable mention to SKL, Rinne no Lagrange and Buddy Complex.
I see you're new to Mazinger.
Shin Mazinger ZERO, and it's not fully scanlated anyway, and the releases are slow.
What did they do to my pure Mazinger!?
Just make sure you go in production order. The prequel OVA was made after the original series finished, and is a lot more impactful if you watch it there instead of in chronological order.
>Xebec boss Habara saying "my role is over" and "thanks for 11 years" which suggests there might not be a sequel.
That can mean a lot of things. HE might be done with Fafner, he might be retiring or hell those two statements might not even be connected.
Nobody ever thought we'd be getting more Fafner after RoL, and DA ended with far far far fewer plot hooks than Exodus.
Superior tastes my friend
I wonder what gender ange was
tried to watch majestic shit, but it was so bad.
Definitely MJP. S2 when?
I can't believe it was a little less than 5 years ago. It was campy as all hell.
Also, Commie really should have finished Daimidaler. As much of a "memesub" as it was, it was perfect for the type of show.
I personally loved the action being that fast, even if it meant i had to rewind more than once. It's what made the series the best mecha anime in the last five years for me, in fact i decided to watch it when i saw some videos on YouTube of some of the fight scenes.
>People getting tricked by the OP/ED
Did they not watch DA?
A show that ended with Soushi in a pilot suit during the end credits nearly every episode
I apparently completely missed this last winter. Should I watch the movie first?
Never mind, gonna use this >>135604193
Good thing I'm off for like 5 days straight starting monday and classes haven't started up yet
Not to mention that the only person who ended up wearing the coat in the ED was the Gooch.
Alternatively, you could just get the philosophy-raws release instead.
I would agree but then I realised that Star Driver is now slightly more than 5 years old
That fucking scene. What the fuck. What was the point of making Bell's mum laugh like that? Why even?
God knows how many anons we lost trying to understand G-reco.
Just remember it for being visually fantastic.
man i honestly have no recollection of watching the show last year. The only thing i remember is most threads devolving into shit posts most of the time.
You could, but like the other anon said, you'll miss out on all the world building and character development from the previous serie/movie/ova.
Fafner is one big continuous story so it would not be a great idea to jump in in the middle.
You could do it though, but then it wouldn't be as good as if you watched the rest first.
It has reached a point where it's done well enough that it doesn't distract from the content itself. And like the other anon said, without CGI we wouldn't be getting any mecha anymore.
Fafner Exodus for me.
I'm in the underwhelmed by the finale camp.
Also where was everyone else in this thread when it was airing? It got almost no mentioned in the threads about what people were watching.
>got to the last scene where mt fuji got sliced
>suddenly blank screen
>"shit i got bad rips, why the fuck it crash in the last minutes"
>ask /m/ for good torrent
>it actually ended like that
Because at first it was just the few of us on /m/ watching it in our threads. During its run some people kept popping in to see what all the fuss was about and some of those became converts.
Also since we have nice little pictures telling everyone exactly what to download and watch it became much easier to get into Fafner. It also helps that Fafner is fucking amazing.
And yeah I had hoped for way more closure at the end, but I'm fine waiting for the eventual sequel.
i actually really liked greco, it was kind of a mess at times but i totally bought into the world. I really hope the whole visual team and designers get to work on something together again. Tomino too, his ideas are pretty cool but he just needs someone to reign him in. Writing, directing and storyboarding is just too much for one person anyway let alone a 73 year old man.
and Fafner Exodus was cool too. It was also very pretty
we'll get a sequel one day right?
I watched MJP and the battle scenes were painfully overrated. They relied too much on shakycam and this was probably the only actually well-choreographed fight. The characters were quite fun, Ange was great.
I'll definitely go with Fafner for the best mecha of the decade.
While I wouldn't call it the best mecha of the decade, it's pretty high up there. Shame IBO isn't doing as much for me as M3 did, I guess being Gundam puts a lot of restrictions on a series.
Expelled from Paradise was pretty good despite being cgshit.
Billy's entire character arc was him constantly making the wrong choice despite being a nice person.
He was a wishy washy person who should have never been a pilot.
Making such decissions gave him a headache
Valvrave. There were better written mecha shows but Valvrave was still my favorite. I also don't think it's as bad as /a/ claims, even with its problems.
Captain Earth did but it doesn't matter much because the actual show and fights were garbage.
>new characters were awful.
GIVING A FUCK ABOUT CHARACTERS in a show about FIGHTING ROBOT TOYS
GBFT > GBF
such an easy choice it's not even funny
You just have horrid tastes
This excuse again? The show didn't need to be longer it needed to be rewritten since the staff obviously didn't give a shit about quality and wanted another SEED level success.
>AND the new characters were awful.
I really have no trouble with the new characters. They were just terribly poorly used.
There was definitely good potential there, they just did almost nothing with it. But when the characters were good, they were good. And the problem is just that they weren't allowed to be good more than like once or twice each in the entire show.
Pure mecha? Probably Gundam Build Fighters. Too bad Try sucked. I also really liked Gargantia but it was barely a mecha show. Majestic Prince and Argevollen were pretty solid. Captain Earth was a snoozefest. Valvrave, Aldnoah Zero, and G-Reco were legitimately some of the worst anime series I've ever seen in my life.
I really wanted to like Majestic Prince, but it had Hirai, and whenever I watch anything that has his art on it all I can do is sit there and be reminded of how terrible SEED was, and I'm apparently too autistic to let that go and enjoy anything else he's worked on. Couldn't even finish two episodes of MJP because the faces were just pissing me off.
To stand in man's form as something more than a man.
Also, let us remember the words of the prophet, who knew that all dig giant robots.
At least we got some nice porn of it.
>G-Reco were legitimately some of the worst anime series I've ever seen in my life.
Valrave is drek, but it's entertaining drek. It's just so earnest about everything even as it starts bouncing off the wall and building a statue dedicated to crack cocaine in its living room.
It is a mecha fanservice series to promote the new model campaign afterall.
I bought Build Burning because of it.
>Wasn't as strong of a season though.
Yeah, but the fights were good. Seriously, who here wasn't smiling when they revealed Tryon 3?
I want one so fucking much.
Build Fighters. Made it into my top 10 easily after the Fellini fight, and after that it was all uphill.
Kansai Hick was the only good thing about Try until the last episode with Fumina and Yuuma teamed up.
The team fights were just under utilized and the few times they built up to good, actual 3v3s, it just became "how do we get this CQC Gundam close enough to punch all 3 of the enemies before they can shoot him"
