I think it's during the Gate closure arc. The gate suddenly closes and separates the two worlds again. Things get pretty desperate. Tuka and the others hear of a rumor that there are survivors of her tribe. Thinking that her real father may be among them Tuka and the others go off to look for them. They do find them, but her father's dead, but she finds her new born little sister. She and Itami "adopt" her and they return to Alnus Base. It's also revealed that since she's a rare fairy type elf, Tuka has the power to reopen the gate. To which she unlocks her magical power and restores the gate.

I prefer the manga since the content is about adult themes and making some of them cute looking would make it difficult to be immersive. LN would be close to that ideal too. Majority of complaints against the anime designs was because we were expecting a midway between moe and realistic; in other words, the LN designs were ideal. However what came as a result was a overly simplification that made them look a lot younger and shojo appealing that was uncalled for. You can argue that it was to balance the budget by saving money for the animation production but a hit series like this would've made up for this and garnered better results if they pushed it a bit further. It's just proof that their mentality into this was to keep it as low risk as possible and the result is a profitable series that didn't reach it's full potential, hence all the bitching that came into these threads when the anime designs leaked and first few episodes in.

I don't think the anime is pushing aggressive nationalism. That's just nonsense from people who think Japan should still be apologizing for WWII.

I think the political stance of the anime is that Japan should be a fully functioning member of the international community, i.e. have a full-scale military and be able to participate in peacekeeping missions and combat operations to assist allies as needed. Japanese pacifism is naive. It sounds nice, but the only reason it's worked so well is that they're under the US nuclear umbrella. But there's no guarantee the US will always have the political will or resources to defend Japan.

They took out a ton, especially in the last few episodes where for some reason, they tried not to cover anything that was already covered by the manga. Which was a retarded decision.

It's been awhile, so I can't remember the specifics, but one thing that stuck out to me was where in the anime, Pina realized that all they needed was to steal some guns to fight on equal ground. In the manga, Leilei could see what Pina was thinking, so she pointed out that even if the Empire could get "light" weapons, the JSDF (cue conveniently passing tanks) still had "heavy" weapons.

It's a small thing, but it covers up a pretty major plot hole. This scene wasn't even as bad as the missing scenes in the following episodes.
